The thing about SEGA as a company is that they were reactive, not proactive.
They went for accessories, add-ons, multiple consoles, and more because they wanted to stay ahead of the competition.
If they hadn't done the Sega CD and 32X, went right from the Genesis to the Saturn, and didn't do the early release, they probably would've been fine.

Or if they'd advertised just 12-15 games that used that powerful ASIC DSP and its impressive hardware scaling, rotation, warping, and 3D graphics, a lot more people would've bought the addon when the price dropped to $199--basically a new console that played 1,000+ Genesis titles.
As important, if SEGA had put the tens of millions from the 32X into the Nomad, they might've dominated the color portable market in the late 90s--basically with no competition.

The Sega CD was a meaningful experiment in gaming, and every other company was trying their hand at a CD-Add on too. Nintendo included. So Sega CD has a justified place in history, and was memorable in it's own right.
None of the above can be said for the 32X. That was just a huge mistake.

@Gametester110-qf8vs True, but if you don't put your accomplishments on television, 90% of people have no idea that you've done anything. Most people still believe that the Sega CD couldn't do anything but sh***y FMV games, even to this day.

The real, fundamental problem, as someone who bought the Master System right away, the Genesis (also when it came out), the Sega CD, the 32X, and lots of controllers, games, accessories, was the ever changing hardware roadmap that no one could possibly keep up with. Retailers, devs, and gaming enthusiasts keep getting the rug pulled out. In the end, Sega boosters would've had to spend over $2,000 (almost five grand in today's dollars) just in consoles if you tried to buy everything from 1989-99, when the doomed Dreamcast was launched to a confusing ad campaign.
By 1995, every new, expensive piece of hardware hit stores as a ticking time bomb waiting for that terrible word from SoJ: "discontinued." Not one piece of hardware was ever released based on Sega of America nor consumers asking for it. What was amazing was that SEGA managed to dominate North America, Europe, and Latin America under the Kalinske team in spite of the insanity coming out of Japan. SoJ was in no position to support yet another console and more confusion for gamers and third party devs.
The Sega CD+SVP (for only $49.95 with six games already developed for it: Daytona USA, Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, and Star Wars Arcade) was exactly the platform that 1994 needed, yet SoJ again pulled the rug out and rescued defeat from the jaws of victory. None of the guys at the game stores knew what SEGA was doing when the Saturn was just a few months off. Then, without warning, it was released for $400 in only a few stores with almost no games!

Wow, thanks for that amazing insight. I completely agree, a lot of the stuff the Sega's executives did was very confusing and often lead to a confused message to the end consumer. Well researching the video I couldn't find a reason as to why they did this, but it does seem to me like most of the decisions were very reactive instead of proactive and well thought out. It does seem like there was quite a bit of bureaucracy at the time. Do you have any insight into that?

@ThePhilosophyOfMarketing Tom Kalinski said that before he would take the job, he needed to have complete control over the international market. He said that Japanese management was infamous for micromanaging their foreign divisions and that this would lead to a failure of the company overseas. Once SEGA of America lost their autonomy, the arcade giant quickly collapsed.

The Sega Saturn is my all-time favorite game system. Sadly, it arrived during a time when Sega was too busy being it's own worst enemy, to properly compete in the console wars. It still had a fantastic library.

Unfortunately now Microsoft and SIE are the ones that are giving us the middle finger and are refusing to abandon ship when EVERYONE is already moving over to PC Gaming

“Piss off you PC nazi! Consoles FTW, PCs SUCK!!!🖕” - some console fanboy who sees PC gamers as their enemies.
I can imagine the two gaming races going to war with each other. How about you?
