Such interesting little film. It has elements of an old Ealing Comedy and sort of crossed with "The Third Man" - what with the search for Mr. Locke. Great cast as well : Shirley Anne Field, Adrian Dunbar, Ned Beatty, James Nesbitt, William Hootkins, Tara Fitzgerald. It's just a shame that Peter Chisholm never really equalled or excelled it, with his other films.
I think it was a bit of small arthouse hit. Sadly, I never got to see it in the cinema. But, I did get to see it on TV and now own the DVD(which isn't exactly extras heavy).

I almost thought that Dunbar was Crispin Glover.

I saw this film when it first came to America, in Chicago at the fine arts theater downtown. I swear that after the film, I was standing next to Barry Levinson as we both took a piss together at the urinals. Was it? Or wasn't it? Mr. X.

It could’ve been. Directors love to sneak in to regular theaters to see audience reactions, mostly when their movies premier. Nora Ephron R.I.P. & her husband sat behind us when we saw you’ve got Mail opening weekend 1998 at Sony Lincoln Square Cinemas 68th St in NYC. Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw sat in back of us opening weekend when we saw Chicago at that very same theater in 2002. I couldn’t believe my eyes and had to do a double take on that one. He smiled and said yes it’s me and offered us some popcorn he was so cool, eating common folk popcorn like a boss. Nora, rest her soul was also very nice and was mobbed by folks wanting to congratulate her afterwards. Patiently stood chatting with people for at least 20 minutes. So although Spielberg wasn’t involved with Chicago and Barry Levinson wasn’t involved with hear my song to the best of my knowledge, these auteurs are after all, movie fans first & foremost, which is essentially why they create movie art for a living. I say, it WAS Levinson, who also was associated with Miramax so it makes sense that it was him. And I could see this being his kind of film.

Over here in England, my urinal neighbour was Mike Leigh at the Manchester showing of Life Is Sweet

Word on the street is that Mr Leigh considers it a career highlight

Fortunately Adrian Dunbar died in 1984 and James Nesbitt died in 1998 they were replaced by Louis Stone and Lionel Barrymore
