Petra has many amazing songs from both of the singers. You want more grit you will probably enjoy John Schlitt more formerly lead singer of head east. He joined Petra in the mid 80s and sang for them until they said farewell in 2005. Some great songs are Beyond belief, he came he saw he conquered, All fired up, praying man, no doubt, dance, creed, and many more. Great songs from this lead singer Greg X Volts are like Grave Robber, more power to ya, beat the system among many more. Hope you check out more Petra. Other great Christian classic rock bands are Resurrection Band, X-sinner, holy soldier, barren cross, and white cross
I've been a fan of Petra for almost 40 years. I've also studied their music on my guitar. This is one of my most favorite song. Bob Hartman (songwriter and band founder) is an amazing guitarist.
I became a Christian in 1983 and Petra was my absolute favorite. We used to travel all over MI to see them and did get to know these very godly musicians. The best song I'd love for you to listen is " More Power to Ya"
More Power to Ya is a great song. Tim Mcgraw did a cover of it that was pretty good but not as good as the original;. Liked Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows off that same album, one of my other favorites.
I met my husband because of this band. We eventually went on to help them with promotions in the early 2000s. They won Grammy's in the 80s and 90s with newest lead singer John schlitt who has the wild rock voice....he was former lead singer for secular band Headeast. His story is pretty amazing...just God all the way around. He also now sings for The Jay Sekulow Band!
I love Petra! They, along with 2nd Chapter of Acts, Keith Green, Amy Grant and Carmen were my childhood. I love their Coloring Song and their "It Is Finished." Here's a link to "It Is Finished." ua-cam.com/video/23fRSCi2Cus/v-deo.html
All of my teenage years occurred in the 1980's (graduated high school in '86). In the summer of 1984 one of my neighborhood friends asked if I'd be interested in going along with him to a Bible study. I went to it plus a few more. During this time I became familiar with a few Christian groups/artists during the praise and worship segment. Three of them were Petra, Sandi Patty, and Twila Paris. Skipping ahead many years later I was watching a Christian TV network show and one of the guests on the program was a singer that I never heard of before; Judy Jacobs. Hearing her perform Days of Elijah brought me to tears. It was so powerful. I immediately loved it. A couple of other favorites of mine are: 1) Petra - The Coloring Song 2) Michael W. Smith - Great is the Lord. Give them a listen. The lyrics are available as well.
I also graduated high school in 1986. I liked some of the earlier Petra, but it was a song or two here or there. I really got into them when John Schlitt joined them on the “Back To The Street” album, (tell me that album cover doesn’t scream “80s”!) LOL I liked Amy Grant, Mylon Lefevre, Carman, and the occasional song by Michael W. Smith, Russ Taff, Bryan Duncan, etc., (though I often found Michael W. Smith a tad too nasal in his signing, so I only really like a half dozen or so of his songs). But I was also an Iron Maiden fan…and someone introduced me to Barren Cross. Uh oh. They sounded enough like Maiden that they got my attention. Before then, I hadn’t a clue there were any Christian bands playing music like that! I was instantly hooked! LOL I dove into the harder side of Petra, adding onto that, the Heavenly Metal: Stryper, Whitecross, Shout, Holy Soldier, Bride, Scarlet Red, Bloodgood, X-Sinner, etc.; and I kept on listening until sometime in the 90s, when those bands kind of trickled off into obscurity as so many good bands did when the Grunge movement unfortunately had its way with Rock for a while. A prayer was literally answered when Petra put out their praise album! I had always thought Rock and praise made a good team. Most of those old bands are still in the rotation of my music and when one shuffles onto my playlist, it always makes me think of some very good times, at a very small church, with some very good friends, (several of which I still see or talk to regularly)! And…Stryper is still making new music regularly and it’s even harder Rock now than it ever was back then.
One of my little league teammates introduced me to Petra and the Rez. Band. In the early 80s with a cassette tape that had a Petra Album on one side and a Resurrection Band Album on the other. Sarah the 80s when no one got sued over copy write infringement. 😂😂😂 This one was new to me though so may have been an earlier song or later one. Those two bands lead the way to the Alternative Christian Music we have today.
When this song came out I was a early teen and was obsessed with it. A few years back, seen it on YT and listened to it which brought back some good memories from my youth. Thanks for reacting to it, glad you liked it.
That’s early Petra. Greg X. Volz singing lead. They were more Contemporary Christian music back then. Smoother and more ‘radio friendly’. They transitioned into being a bit more Rock and less ‘Adult Contemporary’. If you want to hear a bit more ‘grit’, you’ll have to jump forward in Petra’s catalog to when John Schlitt took over lead vocals. “Back To The Street”, “All Fired Up”, “Somebody’s Gonna Praise His Name”, “Shakin’ The House”, “Jekyll & Hyde”, “Midnight Oil”, “Dance”, “He Came, He Saw, He Conquered”, “Seen and Not Heard”…are all songs with John Schlitt on lead vocals and have an edge of ‘grit’ to them.
Howdy! I'm pressed for time and will risk telling you things you know, and mayhaps duplicating other comments. The song you heard was from 1981, "Never Say Die", Petra's fourth album and best to date. I was really startled seeing them in concert where they played that effect you liked at 4:05, it was all dark except white lights shining in a fog cloud. Whoa! Petra went through several incarnations, 20 studio albums in 30 years. Lead guitarist and songwriter Bob Hartman was the constant factor. Several members did a reunion tour, and if you search UA-cam (I won't post a link, those get deleted by the system) for this exact phrase, "Classic Petra 03 - Angel Of Light (Back To The Rock Live)" you'll get something that is true to the original but has a bit more grit. Watch out for those things recorded on cell phones, the one I'm telling you about is professional.
Petra was started in 1972 (1972-2005), and Angel of Light was released on their Never Say Die album in 1981. They are one of the first Christian rock bands. They were also one of the biggest target by many anti rock music churches in those days. But their message of the Gospel has never changed. And talking about their grit? They have 33 years of gritty songs.
Greg X Voltz who is the lead singer of Petra at this time, he sang for them from 76 to 85. He was offered to be the lead singer in Reo Speedwagon in 76 but turned it down because of his Christianity and went to be the lead singer to Petra instead. His earlier years he shared the stage with Janis Joplin and Chicago.
The newer version when they revisited it has more of the modern grit. However the timeframe that this song originally released was on par for reaching the same “rock” sound that was on par to challenge secular groups like blue oyster cult.
If you want more grit in the singing, listen to the second major lead singer of Petra John Schlitt. One good song from his era could be, "Beyond Belief."
Petra is the first Christian Rock band formed in 1972. Their name means "The Rock" as in "The Rock Jesus Christ". Petra is also the name of the Biblical city in the country of Jordan carved into rock featured in many documentaries and movies. This is the country rock era under Greg X Voltz as lead singer. But when John Schlitz became lead singer in mid 80s their music radically went heavier and even more radically Christian under Spiritual Warfare themes. They are the only Christian band respected in secular circles who never compromised and have memorabilia in Hard Rock Cafe. After being falsely accused of being satanic, they purposely recorded a back masking message before the song Judas Kiss that played backwards simply states "Wat are ya lookin' for the devil for when you outta be lookin' for the Lord?!" Petra PRAISE THE ROCK CRIES OUT is jammed out praise and worship songs and Psalms.
Petra is awesome!! Check out the songs Kenaniah and Creed, two of my all-time favorites of theirs. Also check out Mine Field. That one definitely has a lot of "grit."
You want to hear this song with a lot more grit behind it then you need to check out the recorded version of angel of light off the album by Petra called back to the Rock that version hits harder
Petra is one of my all time favorite bands. Good choice. Check out Speak to the sky, The Coloring Song, and More power to ya. Some of their best! Also please review some Skillet songs!!!! Especially Legendary , Stars, and Lions!!!!!
Petra actually wanted more “grit” in their sound, and had it live. But the record producers of the time thought going any heavier would be too much for the Christian music market.
This is old school Christian rock that I think has more teeth to it than a lot of the current repetitive worship music. Maybe do reactions to Mylon LeFever’s Again and Again, BeBe Wigan’s Wanna Be More or Rich Mullins Elijah.
My favorite Petra songs Adoni, Second Wind, Clean, Let Everything That Hath Breath Praise the Lord, Got The Whole World in His Hand Check these songs out Ty
Odd that the only reference to an "Angel of Light" in the Bible is Satan.🤔 Other angels in the Bible have light around them, but it is never their title.
Love Petra!! I started listening to them in high school in the 80's!! '86 graduate Open Door Christian!!
I grew up with Petra
I love and still listen to them
Such great messages and lots of scripture
Great reaction
Me too!
I grew up with Petra as well their music has stood the test of time and the lyrics still ring true today
72 and stillk do.....heed the message.....stay the straight and narrow.....

Wow - Your testimony is so parallel to mine. I just posted my comment a minute ago. I lived in Michigan too back then.
More Power to Ya is a great song. Tim Mcgraw did a cover of it that was pretty good but not as good as the original;. Liked Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows off that same album, one of my other favorites.

Saw Petra several times back in the 80’s and 90’s. Always great!
Thank you.

This brings back the days of my teenagers! They played Petra non stop! Memory Lane for me!
I saw Petra in concert when I was a teenager, it was a fabulous show!
yay petra! Greatest Songs: God Pleaser, "Grave Robber" "The Coloring Song" and so many more!
I used drive the highway blaring Petra this Song was one- Too Late For Annie will make you cry.
Annie brings tears to my eyes. Powerful song.
They are considered by many to be the greatest Christian Rock Band of all time. Their later albums had much more grit. This is Early Petra.
All of my teenage years occurred in the 1980's (graduated high school in '86). Oh yes, PETRA! This is the original lead singer, Greg X. Volz. I do think he sings a bit the lead singer of Kansas.
Yes! I always thought their early stuff sounded quite a bit on par with Kansas.
I agree, when you & Magic Bendy mentioned Kansas it popped right into my head, yes! (or my ear?)lol
Actually, Petra formed in 1972, and the original lead singer was Greg Hough
My first experience of Petra as a youngster and bought 1984s beat the system then back to the street 1986. Classic memories
One of my little league teammates introduced me to Petra and the Rez. Band. In the early 80s with a cassette tape that had a Petra Album on one side and a Resurrection Band Album on the other. Wow, Petra ... and from the late 70's and hence the lack of grit. I haven't heard this in a while. Very nice! Yes, the harmonies sound like Petra ; )
These lyrics were totally ahead of it's time. Truth
Great song! I understand what you are saying,. I can listen to this driving by myself, working around the house.
Petra in Greek means ROCK. Love them since 1984 as a kid.
Loved this

John Schlitt may just be my favorite vocalist of all time. So good and unique as well.
They were the first rock band I was allowed to listen to. This is a great song!

It has a sort of Queen sound!
Great reaction!!! This is one of my favorite Petra songs! 🙏👍
Check out their tune Jeckle and Hyde.
I just love love love your channel. 😇
Petra is my favorite band of all time--if you want to hear something harder and more gritty by them check out Jeckyl and Hyde--it rocks the house!

Petra Clean is one of my favorite songs of theirs
I'v been listning to Petra since 1983. Now you need to hear White Heart Don't wait for the movie.
I first heard this on the cassette back in 1981 entitled never say die
Greg X Voltz who is the lead singer of Petra at this time, he sang for them from 76 to 85. You may need to listen to more Petra Especially in the early 90s Beyond Belief Is a great song
I ❤️ your videos … Can’t wait to see the next….

Greatest Christian Rock band ever

Petra PRAISE THE ROCK CRIES OUT is jammed out praise and worship songs and Psalms.
They re-recorded this one on their 2010 album Back to the Rock and it has a little more "grit". More guitar oriented and less keyboards.
Petra is awesome!! Check out the songs Kenaniah and Creed, two of my all-time favorites of theirs. Also check out Mine Field. That one definitely has a lot of "grit."

Do more Petra God PLeaser is a good one there are so many I'm 74 and still listening
LOL @ "I gotta write this down, hold on"
Petra is one of my all time favorite bands. Good choice. Check out Speak to the sky, The Coloring Song, and More power to ya. Some of their best! Also please review some Skillet songs!!!! Especially Legendary , Stars, and Lions!!!!!
Would love to see a reaction video to Petra Hit You Where You Live
Beyond Belief was their peak as far as songwriting is concerned.
Please react to "Ready, Willing, And Able", which is also performed by Petra.
Acdc, back in black.
I think you were thinking of Back In Black by AC/DC -- when you mentioned a part of the song that reminded you of something else
Petra actually wanted more “grit” in their sound, and had it live. But the record producers of the time thought going any heavier would be too much for the Christian music market.
Petra coloring song is good

The song is a warning about lucifer. And I wish it also had more grit. Im telligm you, late 80s through 90s Petra does give you grit.
My favorite Petra songs Adoni, Second Wind, Clean, Let Everything That Hath Breath Praise the Lord, Got The Whole World in His Hand Check these songs out Ty
Try God Gave Rock and Roll to You. You want David and the Giants - The stones will surely cry out.
Odd that the only reference to an "Angel of Light" in the Bible is Satan.🤔 Other angels in the Bible have light around them, but it is never their title.
True. Which is exactly what they’re talking about. How he tries to deceive you.
Greg X Volz.......good old stuff but fit for these times......
Here's a must watch, The Pointer Sisters do country music:ua-cam.com/video/Pt9OVvHM87o/v-deo.html
I noticed the people who request Christian music from the 80s always pick the worst songs... lol Petra had way better songs
We all have our own tastes. This was my introduction to the band as a young teen. Still one of my favorites. Guess music is subjective.
