What can the Planet of the Apes teach us about perspective?

There is a scene from "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" that I liked. I worked as an usher in a movie theater in high school in 1971 when this came out so probably saw it a hundred times. This is the scene where the President's science advisor: Dr. Otto Hasslein explains why time travel might be possible.
It's an interesting perspective - viewing time as a freeway with an infinite number of lanes leading to different futures. From this, he says, "it follows that by changing lanes we can change the future".
Perhaps we don't have the skills of "infinite regression" but perhaps we can try harder to see the "big picture" and the picture that is even bigger than the big picture.
