Nice to see the job done properly. So many don't understand the geometry involved and use a jog that produces a rediculous cutback. An accentuated problem when solid wood top is used.

What tool do you use to cut the male piece to get a perfect edge. A circular saw or router?
@@jimdunbar3711 I used my makita track saw with a decent blade in it, you could also use a router if you wanted to too 👍🏻
@@jimdunbar3711 I used the circular saw to cut the length. I cut the edge that was going to be the other end to the join if that makes sense. I used a guide by clamping a piece of wood to the worktop so that the cut would be as straight as possible.

It's nuts the amount chippies I see putting a big masons mitre on square edge worktops. I used to do it your way but I've got a trend jig now that creates a 3mm masons mitre, just enough to take the edging off and give a router clean cut on both edges. Good video 👍

@@LTWCarpentry KWJ 750 pro You can set the masons mitre to different depths. I mostly use 3mm. When you do standard post formed top you can set it to cut a lot less out that a standard jig. They are highly recommend. Trend have got a good tutorial video on UA-cam.
Agreed I’ve got that jig I did a 10mm mason mitre , worked a treat , quick and no need to remove the edging.
I personally think you get a better joint using the router. But both ways will get the desired result.

I personally use a chisel to start removing the edges but I then use mall grips to remove it by rolling back then you don’t have anything change of marking or damage the top
I’ve never had much luck doing it that way, I always find it snaps as I’m pulling it off, I would much rather do it that way though as I can see the benefits as you have stated ! Got any tips ?
No I’ll be honest with you, it’s not the easiest job ever ! You can see by the video that I had some snapping, I think that’s where the hairdryer would really work well. But even with it snapping like that I still massively prefer doing it this way.

Recently did a square edge worktop but I used a heat gun to remove the edge trim and dominos for alignment. Great video and thanks for sharing your tips.

@@vrglcom cut a hole in the solid top buddy, just where you want to bolts, that way you don’t weaken your cabinets

😂😂 yeah mate like I say I don’t normally bother but I k ow a lot of people do, also with the biscuit in it I’m very fortunate and have a domino jointer so I’ve started using them in my worktops but i didn’t want to put it in the video as I didn’t want people to think you have to use them. Nice job! You need to pay the extra fiver fornzip bolts though, tighten them up with the drill in seconds instead of quarter turns on a spanner

Hi mate I haven’t got a link I’m affraid as this worktop was supplied by the customer although it is axiom laminate worktop, just punch that in to google and you should find one no problems , sorry I can’t help any further.

No mate, aslong as it square edged then there’s no need to take anything off, just rout in your bolt holes and away you go.

Just the one as per the video, follow the steps exactly as I did in the video and you won’t go wrong, hope that makes sense
Is it essential to remove the edging strip on square edge tops? I appreciate that there is a tiny curve on the top of the strip that would prevent a 100% perfect joint but it would still look pretty good right?
So not essentially I have seen people that haven’t removed the strip and customers have been very happy with it, I personally think it looks much better to remove the strip but in terms of will it work as a joint yes. I would suggest getting a couple of off cuts and experimenting first to see what you happy with.
Thanks for sharing this video. Would you be kind enough to share the brand of glue you normally use? Reason I ask is I'm fitting a square top worktop for a friend. It's a white top and I don't know if it's best to use white or clear glue and which brand works best in your experience 👍🏻
I’ll be honest mate I would use white silicon, that’s what I normally use, works a treat 👍🏻

Hairdryer will help to remove the edge someone not as experienced will shit it using a hammer and chisel ,

Just normal worktop bolts, you can by them from any hardware shop.

If you've got a router then I would definitely run it along the end of the other piece of worktop rather than just prising off its trim... if the angle where the two worktops meet isn't a perfect right angle then you'll need to cut it to accommodate this anyway 👍
Good video! I'd be running a hot iron along that edging strip, just to ease the glue off a little.
Don’t use an iron it will melt and make a right mess, use a hair dryer to warm it up.

@@petef7323 the edging in these worktops isn’t Laminate, it’s pvc edging, the top is laminate
@LTWCarpentry I'd put cardboard between the lipping and the iron, then. If it's coming off, it doesn't matter if it's damaged. I'm only interested in softening the glue, so it doesn't rip chunks from the chipboard. Also, you wouldn't need to get so close to the laminate top with a chisel.

Careful placement of a wotktop jig and with the use of a router would achieve better results in a tenth of the time m8.
Your entitled to you opinion buddy but I don’t think it would achieve a better result, being a carpenter who has tried both methods I would say the both leave good results, I just prefer to do it this way. Thanks for your comment though 👍🏻

I like it, but what I got from it is that working with an £800 length of laminate on my first try might not be the best idea. I'll get a pro in for that!

You have to route a recess in the worktops form the underneath then you bolt them up. Sorry I need to do another video on this

So, would I be correct in thinking that a square edge laminate worktop is a simpler worktop to join than a round edge worktop (for a novice)?
I will be ordering two lengths of worktop, presumably the end of one of the worktops will be a perfectly square edge and ideal to join to the other?
So then I would only need to worry about removing the edge tape and preparing the underside for the bolts?
I never really thought about it but yes I suppose they are easier to fit,
In theory yes the edge should be perfectly square but I would recommend checking this as I have had some there aren’t, saying that you might not actually want them to be perfectly square, if your wall are out of square you will want to cut the end to suit, I do this by laying one over the other and making as needed.
In answer to you last question yes your right other then scribing your joint

Is it necessary to remove the edge banding from dquare edge worktops at all? Do you get a small crack for food to settle in or what?
Yes I would say it’s necessary, it look terrible if you don’t and will leave a gap
why measure the top before you removed the edge strip? its now short by the thickness of the strip
Because you don’t want it to tight, if its tight you won’t have tolerance to get it in when you have the glue in place, also you risk damaging the finished end panel on the other side.
Hi mate quick question, would you cut a HPL laminate any different to a normal laminate?
It’s the same principle but a completely different job if that makes sense ? They are very touch to cut. I would say cut with a track saw then clean up with a router and straight edge

No questions are stupid mate, that’s what I’m here for. I used a track saw with a new blade in it, a router would be a good option but you can do it with a circular saw, you want to keep the cut as straight as possible, so I would suggest using a straight edge to guide your saw (spirit levels are good for this) makes sure you have a good blade and most importantly take your time.and cut it from the underside.

Genuine question, why do you need to remove the edging strip.
Because it will show when you put the two pieces together leave a rather unpleasant looking joint.
I use 'BB Complete' on all cuts and joins, colour-matched to worktop colour, do not confuse BB Complete with that trash colourfill.
Tubes come in two sizes for a normal mastic gun, it's the dogs dangly bits.

Anyone had experience of the the new Trend Trend KWJ750P jig (which can cut a minimal 3mm hockey stick joint) when cutting square edged worktops? I'm impressed by LTW's butt hand jointing skills - by removing laminate edging by hand - but don't trust my skills in removing edging tape with a sharp implement!! The new jig would remove the edging with the router whilst leaving a minimal hockey stick joint. Any user feedback appreciated!!!!
I haven’t had a chance to use one of these but would like to, I would still do it this way but I agree if your not feeling confident then that jig would help !
That's the jig I use, 3mm step is perfect for square edged tops. 10mm step looks great on bullnoze tops.
Would help to see how the bolts are fitted and how one cuts a space for the bolts

Do you not use the mason mitre joint on any square edge worktops, it's only needed worktops that have rounded edges?
That’s correct mate, I only use a masons mitre when I have to now, if it’s square edged then I do a bit joint, I find it looks a lot cleaner.

I don’t use colourfil buddy, you only really need colourfil if there’s a gap that needs filling.
when a work joins near a sink you cant bolt it how do you get around that? my kitchen fitter that that problem and i am now in dispute with howdens because the design didnt allow bolts due to sink location
Sometime you can do your join the other way so the bolts don’t go under the sink but failing that you can bolt and glue it up, let the glue go off then take them out, I have also put the bolts under the draining board before and routed out the material above them, I would also opt for running the joint the other way if possible, hope this helps

why do kitchen fitters use worktop bolts and not just glue up with dominos and clamp with ratchett clamps?
....might be a good reason for this
We use the work top bolts as this is a way of clamping, you could use a ratchet clamp but it’s not always possible to get them in if your working towards a wall ect. Also you would have to do you glue ups before putting the tops on the units which isn’t always possible. Short answer is the worktops bolts are easy and a solid permanent fixing. I do actually put dominos in my worktops aswell I just don’t on my tutorials as this tends to put people off taking the task on

The edging strip has a very slight rounded edge, if you don’t take the edging off you will be left with a small gap and the joint will be a lot more visible
@LTWCarpentry I went to see a job a "kitchen/bathroom fitter did . He did that and it looked a right mess. The strip needs to come off.
From what i gather I'm supposed to leave a 5mil expansion gap on a solid wood worktop. Would this be just along the back where it meets the wall. Or would i need to leave the same gap where the worktop meets a wall or unit at the end many thanks. ?
I normally just leave it against the wall, I have never left it against units and never found it to be a problem.

Personally I'd run a hot iron along the edging strip to soften the glue and, hopefully, get the edging strip off in one piece.
A hot iron would melt the edging strip cause a mess

No your not being stupid at all, I didn’t actually film doing the bolt holes as the video was already getting very long, yes they are routed in from the underneath using a jig. Hope this helps if you need any advice please feel free to ask.

Could you score the top edge (where the edge joins the laminate) to put a separation line to prevent splintering?
You could do mate but to be honest I don’t think it’s necessary, I haven’t had any splintering at all, the keys is just using sharp blades and taking your time

You need to remove the strip as I creates a gap when you join the worktops
Time you've messed about stripping edging of you could of just done a normal worktop scribe with jig ....pull the jig of the pins so the hockey stick cut is really shallow literally 5 mm into male cut .....

Normally use dominos but did for this as it’s a beginners tutorial, you don’t need them/biscuits but it dose make life easier when trying to align

That’s the thing mate everyone uses something different, none of them wrong all just personal presence isn’t it, I’ve actually started using dominos in a lot of my worktops now, only didnt on this one due to making the video.

I don’t actually know where it came from I’m affraid but it’s axiom worktop which are very readily available, a quick google search for axiom oak worktop will bring it up for you.

I’m sorry buddy but I’m not sure if I’m answering your question correctly but basically anywhere they was a factory edge had the edging strip on it. The rest of the faces are my cut edges. Hope this helps

Use heat gun to remove edging tape next time. Much easier

No not at all, in fact that’s what I do I just don’t want to overwhelm the video

Good video but the parts you skipped were very important to me as a home DIYer.
Which parts would you like advice on mate ?
@@LTWCarpentry All of it really. How to join the worktops with bolts. How to apply the glue between the worktops, etc. But perhaps someone as beginner as me just isn't the target audience. Still a good video :)
