  • Follow along as I turn a simple sketch into an art quilt pattern! This art quilting technique is perfect for wall hangings, thank-you gifts, and one-of-a-kind designs where you can practice your embellishment techniques. You really can make an art quilt pattern all on your own from inspiration you see anywhere!
My inspiration photo came from a magazine. I just drew an outline of the part of the image that I wanted to quilt then traced it onto freezer paper to start cutting out my pattern. You can do the same with any inspiration photo. Then follow these steps as you start assembling and embellishing your art quilt.
Here are some of the supplies mentioned in this video:
Ceramic utility or Craft Knife (I used one from Slice)
    Freezer Paper
    Cutterpillar Glow Light Pad
    Slice Pen Cutter
    Iron
Misty Fuse (or other fusible adhesive)
Stay tuned for parts two and three as we finish up this beautiful Girl from Ipanema art quilt!

What is it that you are ironing onto the back of each pattern piece after you iron on the freezer paper? Wonderful instructions. Can’t wait to give it a try.

What was underneath the freezer paper as you cut out the pattern pieces? I was wondering if the tiny blade of your cutter might cut into the background fabric. Have I misunderstood?

Thanks for asking. I forgot to mention it’s an ironing pad. Because of that & a ceramic blade it doesn’t cut the fabric. Ever. Just the paper.

@ExperienceTheQuilt Well, I believe you did say it was an Ironing pad. I guess that's why I thought your blade would cut through it. I now understand it's due to the type of blade that keeps your Ironing pad safe. Who would have thought such a thing? Ha! Well, keep the videos coming. I'm enjoying learning your tips and tricks.

@ValerieJGarrison I do know the teacher I learned it from, Sandra Mollon, said to buy this specific ceramic blade from slice but I think because the ironing pad is soft it pushes away and isn’t easily cut as well.

@ValerieJGarrison I got very sleepy watching you work especially with the tiny iron. Maybe you can edit some of the ironing out of the video? I enjoy learning but it's hard to keep my eyes open when there's so much ironing to watch
