The True Story Behind 'Green Book'

- Both Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are up for Academy Awards for their roles in "Green Book." The film explores the relationship between piano prodigy Don "Doc" Shirley and nightclub bouncer Tony "Lip" Vallalonga. The two meet when Shirley, who is of Jamaican descent, embarks on a tour of the Jim Crow south and hires Vallalonga to chauffeur him around. What unfolds in the movie is a friendship -- but families of both men have quite different interpretations of what really went down between the two. InsideEdition.com's Stephanie Officer has the details. #InsideEdition
Never seen an inside edition video that long before..
Could be because it's a paid promotional Ad

Nick Vallelonga , Tony Lip's son , had a lot of material to search from including letters ,tapes and videos of Dr Shirley telling his own story. So it's clear that what's on the movie really happened in real life. The movie is based on their 8O days first trip together but on the following year they did another one over entire USA that lasted one year. It's obvious that they had a LOT stories / experiences to tell. GREAT movie, fantastic screenplay and an amazing soundtrack. Definatly the best movie I've seen in years.
leilanecozzi It’s “definitely”.
Still if they had wanted the truth the family would have been allowed to have an input. And since Windows holywood not exercise creative licence. What you have is one man's interpretation of what happened.
A reverse Driving Miss Daisy

Viggo's Tony Lip is a legend. Incredible character. Will always love Italian characters.
This is a very good movie I really enjoy it 10/10 for me.
Yea it’s a great movie ppl don’t understand that it’s based on a true story and they can’t change the story, unlike black panther and blackklansman.
Luke C blackkklansman was based on a true story also.
The way that they replicate the 60’s is absolutely amazing.
Anyone after Oscars??
Plot Twist: it is every color but green
Oof
foO
Plot Twist... there wasn't any plot. Terrible movie.
ChubbyChecker182 why cant a movie be good without having a plottwist?
Don’t be racist kids it’s not nice .
Hollywood embellishes all biographies. That’s not the point.
The point is to remember the person.
He sounds like a special man who became successful during turbulent times for people of color.
He should be remembered.
To bad the movie is just about his driver being the nice and sympathetic racist that learned to mend his ways

The movie is really good!!! They did a wonderful job with telling his story. They bith died in 2013. This is based on a true story... When you have time, take a look at it. Be blessed!!
@@b.moffitt5348 the cinema will be packed by now😂
love green book
I remember seeing this movie on a school field trip a few months ago. It was a great movie and my friends loved it!
Main thing Don Shirley's family's saying is that Don was more in touch with his family than the movie said. Honestly, don't know how big of a deal this part is to the story. And the story is what went on between the two from Tony Vallelonga's side. It is possible Don Shirley said he's not in contact with his brother just to avoid conversation. And regarding the chicken too. He may have said it to avoid the stereotype. There's no way for Shirley's brother or nephew to know what went on between the two so they can't say it's complete false.
And yes, it is possible Tony Vallelonga may have exaggerated his side of the story. He seemed like the type with all the photos he took with other famous people. Him saying to wait until Shirley is dead to make the movie kinda proves it. But this is movie "BASED ON" Tony Vallelonga's recollection. Based on his recordings and stories and letters. And audience take it as such.
Here’s the real question

*I wonder when Bob McCoy will come????*
*He didn't came!*
_Bob McCoy good question I wonder too
*Here's a better question does the REAL Bob McCoy reply back?*
The movie poster says, "Inspired by a true friendship." It's a story, not a documentary, so the question is more along the lines of "Did it get the friendship right?" which it seems it did.
PLOT TWIST: I’m high
A movie about Cottonmouth teaching his driver Aragorn how to write letters to his wife Velma.
My idol
You here too?
Wow, one of your best videos Inside Edition. Very informative 👍🏽
I really love this movie
I didn't notice this was an inside edition video...
There's a mistake in this video. The actual trip was a year and the trip in the movie was 2 months.
I want to see that movie!
Hiiii I’m early btw I loveeeee inside edition ❤️❤️❤️
All time favorite movie.
3:20
his family say they were never contacted
Traveling through Jim Crow south, it scares the heck out of me just thinking about it. I will need a drink before I watch it. I still would not want to travel down south USA, scared me. On top of that everyone owns guns. Forget about it, dont want my adult kids or grandkids going there either.
4:23 who in the hell researched this? The movie is set over TWO months.
They specifically say in the movie "2 months", why does the narrator say "1 year"?
Never watched this movie. Is it good?
Good movie
The movie won the best picture Oscar
Grandissimo film!
Cool
This movie is not about Don its about Tony (the driver)! Just be clear. Keep watching.
True or not, I really enjoyed watching it. Good movie.
I enjoyed this movie - it was excellent! If the family was ticked off, then why didn't they make a movie? I suppose they don't have the money! !!!....Great movie -'one can learn so much.
Don Shirley's family is still alive and they said Don Shirley was falsely depicted to make the white drive more likable... Shirley never came out, had three doctorate degrees, never drank, etc... just full of lies. Sad. Why didn't the writers and producers confer with Shirley's family??? Not cool.
*PLOT TWIST THATS THE FALSE STORY BEHIND GREENBOOK*

Vigo deserves to have won the Oscars! Geeèz the academy sucks.
I enjoyed the movie, I thought it was a really good, but not a great movie. I just didn't understand the backlash that came with this movie at all.
If they did the movie like the tapes then it's true.
okay so one side has recordings and letters to back up their claims. they could release them to prove if something is the truth. what does the other side have to prove that the movie is wrong?
I watched the movie it was amazing 😋😋😋
Good movie.
Lisa would confront Green Book
Good movie
I don't know its the equivalent to mansplaining to women whitesplaining to blacks? Instead of celebrating a highly educated, phenomenally talented classical black artist, it was all about a hussler who evolved. So in 50 years not alot has changed.
GREAT AWESOME MOVIE!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!

If the both of them gave their own recorded versions so they would have tapes of material to write this story then why is his family saying its a lie? The man obviously sat down and told his side.
It’s called artistic license
Hey
That’s why everyone in Hollywood is raising hell.

Politically correctness. Really doesn't deserve a best pic title
Excellent movie very funny
I just think the title “Green Book” itself is the issue!
He'll always be Remy Danton to me.
