Patti smith is the person who got me into photography. her pictures look so personal, you can tell that what she photographs things that are meaningful to her and I love that.

    T. Hopper, thank you for a wonderful visit on the aesthetic of Patti Smith. I recalled hearing her music on the radio in the 70’s-it was a short lived indie station(KNX fm) in Los Angeles that played non-commercial hits, singer/songwriter, b-side…&, of course, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Roxy Music, David Bowie, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison, et al. I was blown away by her rawness, energy & song writing skills. Then I discovered her artistic vision in prose, photography, humanity all with this rare unapologetic & beautiful honesty. she’s inspirational to me. It’s so refreshing to see, to read from the purity of the personal, emotional perspective rather than the technical values of art. Another exceptional episode. ✌🏼& 📸

This summer, she was in Paris, in the café next to where I was sitting at the time and I didn't see her - I found out half an hour later on instagra.. I'm still sad lol she's the coolest, one of the very few famous people I would actually love to run into.

Love how you always seem to 'get it' about photography and its many forms .... A couple of thoughts from Patti that I loved are about the glory of being an amateur (doing something for the love of it , not for money ) . And , Not trying to change the world ..... Right On ! This video was very well realized .... You have a gift for this .... Kudos !!! :D

Hi Tatiana - thank you for another interesting discussion of art and photography. Lately I've been feeling emptied out and so not finding things I want to shoot - but still I carry a camera because I know sooner or later the feeling will return. Amateur photography is a pursuit, a process, a way to engage the world - it is a teacher, showing us the things we love and wish to communicate.
Thank you - most times I watch your videos several times. I look forward to more White Noise.

I had no idea about this side of Patti Smith but it does perfectly capture what I enjoy about photography as an hobby and I why love carrying around a cheap point-and-shoot. I find myself often disappointed by my other, more considered, photographs but there's something beautiful in itself about just capturing a moment.
(I don't think I mentioned this on the first video of the series but that intro is so good! And good job on that ad, it fit really well)

After Mapplethorpe, of course there was also a very awkward and unique triumvirate of sorts, this group of friends and lovers placed Patti Smith in a circle with Sam Shepard, and Jessica Lange, which was in and of itself rather ubiquitous of that era (70's/80's) and all three had a wonderful connection with photography in their own right - and where else but in New York City could this have happened. Great video T, loved it.

Nice to hear you mentioning Patti Smith. I love her photography. I have a book of hers called Land 250. It was entirely shot using a Polaroid Land 250 camera, and has a Polaroid of Eiffel tower on its cover, slightly different to the one you showed. I love that book. She is certainly full of surprises and highly talented. I have two Polaroid Land 250s, and I gave one of them to my daughter. The films are no longer available, sadly. Anyone wants to remind the new Polaroid of thousands of these beautiful cameras in existence that need films?

Pretty sure the song 1959 by Patty Smith was about Tibet being invaded by Red China. Horses is still one of my favorite songs. It was so cool when Rob Dupree, and Ivan Crowe were her guitarist also. The KGB was trying to kidnap Ivan. He had to be smuggled in and out of shows. Now how can I forget how great Patty Smith really is! She cowrote People Have The Power with her husband. Heroic inspirational song.

Great documentary video here. You find a most diverse selection of photographers and creatives. Patti Smith creates what one college teacher called, 'interesting snapshots'. That teacher meant some who take snapshots without purpose or discipline. Possibly more amateur than professional. Unlike such photojournalists as Nan Goldin, Henri Cartier-Bresson or Diane Arbus, Smith photographed what looked good at the moment. Communicating her ideas like Bryan Adams, only for the love of photography. Interesting squarespace commercial.

Amazing!! I am so glad you covered her work-- when I first saw her photography it radically changed my perspective on what constitutes an image and honestly made me very relieved. It reminded me that not every shot has to be a complex or grand visual story. On a side note, I would love to hear your opinions on Daido Moriyama or Hiromix! I get the same feelings of the intimate and diary-style approach

I just finished watching an interview with Patty by of all people Dua Lipa. I had no idea she was a photographer but of course know her music. And no idea that she was in a relationship with Robert Mapplethorp. She kept mentioning Robert and once talked about a show he had going and his mom wanted to attend. And well you know she had no idea he was shooting these very graphic photos of Men. I knew instantly who Robert must be when she said that. LOL

Since I got back into shooting film, I don't mind that my compositions are at times snap-shotty, mundane and boring. I don't mind simple concepts and execution. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate sophistication, however. I had seen some of Smith's work before and I like it. I was not that much into her as a rock singer, nor a poet, though. I did like the fact that her late husband was Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5.

I have 5 of her albums. Sometimes she pisses me off with something she says. I still admire her art though. Fred Sonic married her, I liked her bands alot too. Of course her relationship with Robert Maplethorpe, when they were teenagers in New York. I mean Nobel Prize? I guess it doesn't matter. I don't really have very much admiration for the modern super star actors, musicains, sports players. They are way over rated. That's why I loved the punk bands from your country in 77, when I was 19. I mean how can a simple guy like me compare a modern super star to Van Gogh, Mother Theresa, or Mahatama Ghandie.
