I had a short game lesson in 2019 and went on a deep dive for short game videos...at the time, James had veryyyy little content out. Since then, I've consumed just about everything he has put out on social media, and I have to say this is the best video with him that I've seen. Thank you to both of you for this! So many great points in this video
What an eye opener with the strong grip. The club gets longer and you hit behind the ball. Went outside with a weak grip and hit 9 in a row perfect and i always fat the ball. Thanks
Great video Coach! It really helped me understand and visualise the feels I should be trying to achieve! More of this sort of content please! Seeing a teaching lesson provided way more useful information than I would have got from a typical instructional video, and seeing a student (even a pro like yourself) having to adjust and adapt helped me to begin to understand James’s technique. I will endeavour to practice this now and book a lesson if i can find a suitable golf pro! Looking forward to see if it helps you, and you get real benefits in your upcoming course vlogs!
Brilliant stuff, Coach. Love the way this guy goes through the options after watching you, getting an idea what you’re about, and kinda of deciding WITH YOU.
Fantastic stuff! When a coach knows the different match ups required, he's next level as James is. This is the direction I think coaching needs to go to truly help people. That bit about strong left grip and throwing the right hand causing low point issue speaks to me and have never heard it before. Hope to see more with James, thanks coach Lockey!
This is such a dense video but so good!!! What a lesson?!?!?! Amazing insight Coach! James is such a good guy. I appreciate the feelings you have over each of these techniques. It definitely mirrors all of us out there trying to get better! LOL
Best youtube lesson video for 2023, so much to take out of it. Maybe just maybe struggles are over. The flat right hand drill was new to me, and works great.
Tried the chipping grip change on course today, it's a revelation chipped in once all others popped up soft landing so happy.Great tip try it,nothing to lose 😊
James' knowledge of the short game is really impressive but the way he delivers are super high level of technical information is simply phenomenal. What a great job you have done capturing this Coach!
Wow! What a great vid! I have allways thought gripping is by far the most important thing in any length of golf swing. By having it either weak or strong will determine, how you can swing a club. For me baseline is neutral to slightly weak, which produces more of a upright turn compared to strong, where you need to tilt more on long clubs as well to be able to hold the face from getting closed. Few pupils have difficulty in understanding, their lead hand grip is not matched with the trail hand grip. They may take it properly, but during their preshot fishing the trail hand is tweaked into a really strong, while the lead hand remain neutral. Hard habits to break.
This was a phenomenal video! I don't think I have ever seen the how to like this. Just great thank you. I would have chosen the hardest one first in fact that is what I have been doing to my detriment with fats and thins.
Best golf vid I’ve seen from technical point of view, I’ve watched thousands….from when you first appeared white mark ina chicken costume on his driving range.😂😂
Whoa…..My head is spinning. I didn’t know there were choices with the chipping. Such a good video. I’ll definitely be trying these out at the practice green.
It's probably, most likely, most definitely, the best short game video I have seen and I've seen alot simple straight to the point I really want to dive into the different grass types and shot selection. But how does bounce matter with these techniques?
Hi James I have question for you the harder release you teach palm down all the way around what this the best way to hit a higher softer landing with that release more open face or open stance or combo
Interesting stuff. I always feel my control comes from my lead arm with trail arm following (if not actually together as one unit). Any time I get my trail arm/hand involved strike all gets so inconsistent as timing has to be perfect? Ok for bunker shots 👍🏻
Agreed, amazing stuff. I’m actually a near scratch golfer and I have been struggling with hitting fat chips. His comments about a strong grip leading to fat shots when using the wrong release was just mind blowing.
I’m in the camp of strong right hand being much better, I never duff a chip, 54 for everything unless I need to flop over something, then I’ll open the face of my 56 that I have in the bag for bunkers ! 👍 Nice vid for point of views ! 👍🙏
does theese release and grip matchups directly work with fullswing , would have been a nice question and intresting answer, great insightfhull video tho!❤
Great video on improving the short game. Pardon me, but is James showing us 2 forms of grip here? or there is more variation? Thanks if you can clarify.
@@CoachLockey it's been a while since I last played moor park. However I was informed, that soft spikes were banned. Due to a court case, so we all paid for the pro shop to fit our shoes with the old metal spikes. I now reside in new zealand, but due to return to the UK, in the future. Thank you again for the great chipping video.
It depends. There's some bit of all these points in every shot, but this is primarily a short game video; so we are talking about swinging the club at slower speeds than full or even longer partial shots. It's difficult to put a number on it, but I would describe it as greenside, which makes this about all shots within thirty yards from the edge of the green, not the hole. Although the hole is the destination, you're making a small swing without much power to hit a spot (target) on the green (most of the time) that is relatively close to you. That's what this video and these techniques are all about. So, if you want to set some boundaries, these are greenside shots (inside 30 yards of the edge of the green). When you move over thirty yards, you start swinging the club farther and faster until you reach full swing speeds. These moves they're discussing will slowly blend into your shots over thirty yards until you reach whatever your full swing method is. You can always try some of these ideas out on longer swings and see how it goes. Maybe you'll come up with a specialty shot for a particular hole that's giving you trouble! Good luck! 👍
The major benefit is to match up what works best for you. Maybe your grip doesn't suit your release, like coach. Or after trying out a body release instead of a handsy release, you find you hit it better. It's like James said in the opening, all these methods are useful from different lies, grasses, firmnesses, and being familiar with them all can help in the many different situations you can find yourself in; in addition to discovering what method works best for what you want to be your go to shot.
Mate, went out and focused on the palm technique and the grip, wow. The difference was unreal. Found my 60 was much better to use. Even used the technique for sand shots, just wow!
Interesting stuff. I like James’s content on UA-cam as he has a nice way of putting across his points. Also enjoyed the Rick Shiels and Dan Grieve video. Different ways of explaining ‘release’ and both are great communicators 👍🏻
Strong grip is old school, modern swing uses neutral or weaker grip. Much better face control and less reliant on using small muscles. This is the modern golf swing. It also add more spin and lowers flight as angle of attack is more shallow. Also feels better on lower back. Good luck!
If anything modern players tend to have way stronger grips than players of the past. So much modern instruction preaches stronger grips where in the past that never would have been taught. Where have you ever seen instruction promoting a strong grip that’s “old school”?
Good lord Coach just get Phil mickelsons hinge and hold vids. It the style Tiger uses they are the two best in the world I went from a 5 to a 2 in two weeks then to scratch in another 4 weeks Phil also has a putting section in there too.

Massive fan of Coach and James R. Love that Coach is feeling the pressure and James is steering him thru. Brilliant. !
Appreciate the honesty and humility!

Short game is on fire already 👌
Matt, the rapport between you and James was very engaging, the laughter infectious and the information was pure gold. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Best video You ever released !
Agreed 😊
Glad you think so!
I’ve been watching every short game video I could find this is absolutely the best I have found!
Now that was awesomely detailed! Love it!
Glad you liked it!!
Fabulous video Coach...best one yet (for me anyway...enjoyed the explanations for the different techniques )..Go Army
This is such a dense video but so good!!! What a lesson?!?!?! Amazing insight Coach! James is such a good guy. I appreciate the feelings you have over each of these techniques. It definitely mirrors all of us out there trying to get better! LOL

That was so informative!!!! I have been working on weak grip this week and his tips will be very helpful, but I think the body is the best way to go!
Thanks Coach . I've been watching James for a while and its great to hear both of you talking through the techniques. Good job !
Glad you enjoyed it
The best chipping vid out there! Master class from James. Great content Coach!
That was amazing. James is such a good teacher. What great content. Thanks both of you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Completely fascinating. I could watch another hour or two of this.
We will do more 👍
Yes please. In *mark crossfield* voice
One of the best short game vids I've seen. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@CoachLockey would love to see you guys work in the bunker.
Without doubt the best shirt game video I have seen in a lllloooonnnngggggg while. Thank you Coach & James.
You’re welcome
I'm a third of the way through and I love this multi-layered approach, and sharp eye. thanks for the connection.
Glad it was helpful!

Love it Coach. Great lesson. Have been practicing with the grip change in this video and strike has improved incredibly.
Great to hear!

Great stuff. The cupped wrist lob wedge is now my go to flop shot!
Superb advice. Just tried the weaker grip and it was like magic!
Glad it helped!

Couldn't agree more! Glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent video , explaining thing’s really well
Good Gracious, Lockey. That was some of the best golf content I’ve seen, and I’ll bet I’ve watched 500 hours of UA-cam golf content.
Thanks bruh
This is simply the best. Love the insight and amount of knowledge that is shared. I will be watching everything James has out there.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Matt and James. This was very helpful.
Our pleasure!
Such an excellent video and lesson! Thanks Coach and Coach!
Absolutely brilliant
I had two lessons with James a few years back. Great coach, easily better than anyone else I've seen!
He is awesome 👌
This is gold. Brilliant.
Glad you enjoyed it 👌👌
Pure gold. Thank you !
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great content Lockey. I’ve followed James and his stuff for awhile but it’s tough to find a lot. Thank you
Whoa! This is GREAT!
Top bloke, very knowledgable but kept it entertaining.👍🏻
What a brilliant video. Many thanks- practice ground here I come!

Rwally enjoyed that, Coach!! Beena big struggle of. My game for the past 2 years.
Great vid seeing top class coaching working through options
Appreciate it!

What a top notch vlog !!!kudos to you matty you janner !!! 💚👏🙌👍
Glad you enjoyed it
This is awesome!
Fantastic chipping lesson. I’ll try them and see how it turns out. Cheers
I especially like the fit for the golfer approach. Must of the other coaches try to push one method only.
Fantastic loved every minute of this. How would he cure shanks?
Best golf vid I’ve seen from technical point of view, I’ve watched thousands….from when you first appeared white mark ina chicken costume on his driving range.😂😂

Any time!

Lockey thanks for this vid. I’m really struggling with short game.
You’re welcome 👍
Great stuff. I need tips for winter chipping in Scottish parkland mud baths, please.
Coming soon!👍👍👍👍
Tried the weak grip today, transformed my strike on chip shots!
Great vid Coach

Short game specialist? He’s freaking Yoda.
Agreed, amazing stuff. I’m actually a near scratch golfer and I have been struggling with hitting fat chips. His comments about a strong grip leading to fat shots when using the wrong release was just mind blowing.
Thanks Coach and James, that was fantastic..... can you incorporate 1 & 2 ?
Definitely 👍
Excellent interesting stuff
Glad you enjoyed it
The body move - is that similar to a dead hand technique where you rotate the club around the body?
The short answer is yes. There are other factors, but one of the methods discussed here is like Jason Day's dead hands technique.
I’m in the camp of strong right hand being much better, I never duff a chip, 54 for everything unless I need to flop over something, then I’ll open the face of my 56 that I have in the bag for bunkers ! 👍 Nice vid for point of views ! 👍🙏
What about for full swings? Do you have a downswing that is great for getting your super clean contact?
Tried the weaker grip on course today and felt i had much more control and spin 👏
Good stuff
does theese release and grip matchups directly work with fullswing , would have been a nice question and intresting answer, great insightfhull video tho!❤
Never has there been anyone at this age who is the best at anything requiring knowledge
oooh, now that was excellent.
Top lesson, I'm going to try these but I must admit I do like the weak grip one.
Hope it helps
Hi Coach, the movements remind me a lot of the swing of Alex Noren. Maybe the same coach?
Wonderful insight , thank you!
Brilliant.
Great video
Thanks Coach and James, you gave us gold for free. I loved it, please give us more. 🥇🙏
More to come!
Great video on improving the short game. Pardon me, but is James showing us 2 forms of grip here? or there is more variation? Thanks if you can clarify.
You can grip it however you like but your release has to match your grip style 👍
Coach, when you go with the weak grip, are you still gripping the club more in the fingers or more in the palms/life line like a putter?
More in my palm 👍
@@CoachLockey Thanks Coach! I'll definitely work on it!
Great video, excellent content. Will look you up, next time I play your course. Do I still need metal spikes.
My course? Metal spikes? You have lost me!

When do these idea become not applicable. Is it a distance or club ? Great video weak grip love it

That was qualityyyy
Do any of these concepts translate to woods or irons ? Would be cool to see some work with him on full shots.
Does the release in the first technique work in the full swing? Do any players use that?
100%
Thank you.
Loved this vid, any pitching with James in the pipeline?
I’ll put it in the to do list 👍
Mate, went out and focused on the palm technique and the grip, wow. The difference was unreal. Found my 60 was much better to use. Even used the technique for sand shots, just wow!

I’m a strong grip to with a thin miss to so the weaker grip is exactly what I’m going to try 😁
Amazing. I live near Moor Park. How can I get a lesson with James?
