  • This is Les Fruitbat Carter and Jim Bob Morrison.... otherwise known as Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine playing This Is How It Feels - the Inspiral Carpets cover - at their Brixton Academy 1991 gig. This is official (non mobile phone their weren't any then, or if they were they were too big and incapable of taking footage) footage of the gruesome twosome in their heyday.
Starting off as Jamie Wednesday... they made their name with a distinctive style of power pop, fusing samples, sequenced basses and drum machines with rock 'n' roll guitars and off-beat wordplay-loaded lyrics. They reached the height of their fame in 1991 and 92. Over the following years the band took on new members, topping out as a six-piece, but struggled to regain their earlier popularity. They initially split up in 1998 after releasing seven albums.
They have come together for one off gigs, the last being sell out gigs in London in November 2009, titled "The Drum Machine Years". Over the course of two nights the band played their first four albums in their entirety, plus encores.
Now the USMs are back for two concerts in November, 2011 at Brixton and Manchester, known as Norf and Sarf 2011. It'll be RUBBISH!
    In a bar Johnny drinks
    Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill he can't pay
    He's drinking to the memory
    Of a prince in a pauper's grave
    And it's go Johnny go
    Where the bruises don't show
In the church yard wherre the nervous get wrecked
    And turn off your wireless
    For two minutes of silence
Cough up and pay your respects
    And go to the park
    Where vicars and tarts
    Prey for their tormented souls
    By the American graffiti
    From Elephant and Castle
    And Volkswagen yellow and gold
    Johnny drinks, Johnny drinks,
    Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill
    The Pope couldn't pay
Cockles his muscles alive alive 'o
Smashes his bottles of unholy water
And it's go Johnny, go Johnny go, go, go
    Back to the churchyard
Where day out and day in
    Those original sinners
    Are religiously praying
    And where there was muck
    There's a brass band that's playing
    Playing to the memory
    Of a prince in a pauper's grave

Carter USM are artists of central importance in my life. I never saw them live (I was more into the Roses and Mondays at that time), but these videos bring back for me a very very special time. ❤

I don’t know how I’ve never seen this before. One of their most incredible songs (although there are not many that don’t match up), and there is something incredibly beautiful about the audience reactions here as well. I went to so many Carter gigs from 30 Something onwards and also got to work with both Les and Jim on occasion years later, but this stands out as a group experience. Such mutual appreciation between band and crowd.

I think that Carter USM were one of the best bands ever. Sad that I've concluded that twenty years after they split up.

The video that they did about Glastonbury was brilliant. Saw them at Derby Uni. Stood about 15 feet away from Stuart Pearce/Colin Cooper. The visual audio warning, never left the red.

My late brother grabbed me with his best mate in 1993 I think to see these guys at The Prince of Wales in St Kilda and it changed my life, best gig and greatest band I have ever known, 2018 he surprised me again with a ticket to see Jim Bob with Pop Will Eat Itself and Caligula in Melbourne and little did I know it would be my last gig with him.....Thanks from the bottom of my heart Carter USM for being so bloody on point you guys will see me out when i go into the furnace...

I’m from the states and was able to see these guys in Davis, CA. And I still think it’s the loudest show I ever saw. Great for crowd surfing too.
