  • When people think of the most influential artists in punk, there are some obvious options. You've got the Clash, The Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, Joy Division, Black Flag, Fugazi. But a band that get overlooked for their considerable influence is the Buzzcocks. Think about it. Their 1977 Spiral Scratch EP was the first independently released punk record, which fused the idea of DIY to the punk ethos. It set a precedent for bands releasing their own music, their New Hormones label predating Rough Trade, SST, Touch and Go, Subpop and Dischord. Guitarist Pete Shelley and original frontman Howard Devoto also booked the Sex Pistols to play their first Manchester gig, making the band not just a London scene blip but a national presence, as well as kickstarting the Manchester punk/indie scene. Plus for better or worst, they invented pop punk and did it better than any other band since. But for this video I'll be focusing on their greatest moment: “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)”.

@@honourethefire5794 We agree the Sex Pistols while fun and with A classic LP were very good but they were overrated hogging the limelight and getting all the credit. Lydon these days is an utter cockwomble and utter shameful and a nasty embarrassment like neo Nazi Morrissey although both did do seriously good work (Pil 1st 4 LPs; Smiths) earlier.

I feel the same way about Husker Du. Even though I knew (thanks to a SPIN magazine interview) that Mould was gay, I never thought anything about their love songs save "man singing to woman." I guess I read my straight, cis-gendered self into the tunes. So be it... And like the Buzzcocks, who cares? Great music is great music. That gay and/ or bi people pissed off religious right-wing jackholes and skinhead idiots made the music even better. :-)

Are they gonna get some young dude to replace him like they did with Darby Crash and the Germs when they made that movie? Or it's like when Lemmy died and the other guys in Motorhead said that was it, you just can't replace Lemmy. It's more honorable for bands in this situation to just tour under a different name but play the original band's songs, more respectful to the legacy of the deceased imho

I’d like to note that the photo you used at 2:44 when you mention that Shelley was openly bisexual is not of Shelley and someone he was in a relationship with. It’s him and Steve Diggle (a fellow Buzzcocks member) messing around. Nothing serious.

that's a cool FYI, but he more than likely just used it for lack of an authentic visual example.

Love this band! Record store connection demanded I get Singles Going Steady and I could not believe it, hit after hit after hit. Just phenomenal. Look up Pete's "Homosapien" and "Telephone Operator" - great songs.
The early New York punk scene had room for romanticism, love, emotion, relationships, and humor without sacrificing the punk sound - examples that leap to mind are the New York Dolls, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and yes The Ramones!

Pete Shelley was always underrated and underappreciated. And never more so than his solo album XL1.
"(Millions Of People) No One Like You" could be the sequel to "Ever Fallen In Love."
If you haven't listened to XL1, you should.

Cool video, but hard to say "Ever Fallen In Love" is "dominated" by minor chords when there's literally one minor chord in it! Haha.

Most the lyrics are sung along with the minor chord.

I’ve been listening to punk since the late 80s and I don’t know how Buzzcocks slid under my radar until the past few years. Such a great band.

I was thirteen when that song came out and I bough it.
I had just moved up to high school and for some crazy reason, this posh, Teutonic, statuesque tall blond girl took a fancy to me and consented to 'go out with me'. All the other boys couldn't believe it, it was like snagging a super model.
We never go to go on any dates though and I found out later she had moved on.
I sat at home listening to that song with a strong desire to smash the record upu while it played :)
