Good video! But when you put extension tubes the aperture doesn't stay the same!! Once you add "lenght" between the iris and the sensor, the aperture diminishes proportionally!!
It's not just about the clarity. What makes probe special is that it can reach to unreachable angles /spots. If it was just about clarity, there are tons of macro lenses in the market.
This has been the best video for this yet. I have watched a bunch and they just do this topic justice like this one. You are more upfront about the costs and the differences than others are. Thank you
Macro videography must be one of the most satisfying things that I have ever seen. Also those extension tubes actually work like a freaking beast man. Anyway, just wanted to say that your content is amazing, some peter Mckinnon quality dude, keep up the amazing work! Looking forward to some more content Connor!
Macro is ridiculously satisfying isnt it! And yea I know those macro tubes are actually pretty amazing (Especially for the price) Thank you so much for the kind words :) I look forward to creating more!
2 quite important wrong things you said: 1. The more extension tubes you add, the more F stops you loose, so no you're 2.8 lens with 2 extension tubes is not a 2.8 anymore regarding the amount of light. 2. In theory the extension tubes do not change anything regarding the sharpness of your lens, you shouldn't loose any sharpness at all, they work as the bellows that everybody used to do in product photography. But I experienced some lost of sharpness as well using these tubes with my extra sharp Sony macro lens, and it was actually because of the not perfect alignment of the lens with the camera sensor after having added some bad quality extension tubes, once I found a solution to keep everything in perfect alignment, it was sharp again.
Thanks for the knowledge! This was early in my camera career and I’ve learned a ton since. Definitely made some mistakes but that’s what creating is all about. Making mistakes and learning from them
What an incredable high high quality video, and great information, saved me $1600. (one side note, the background music was a bit distracting and competed with your voice, in my headphones anyways, most the highs)
my current favorite lens is the Laowa 15mm macro lens. i got it for a bargain price of $175 on ebay. its honestly amazing for getting a unique ultrawide look, even on APS-C where I needed to use a speed booster. nothing else comes even close. the only downside is that the end is a completely unnecessary 77mm size which severely limits how close you can actually get to subjects, so unfortunately its no probe lens replacement
Never knew that the probe was F14! Thats a freakin bummer. Love the probe for that crazy b-roll but i can definitely see myself buying it, using it for a day, then sticking in on the shelf cause its such a pain to use. Great insight as always Conner!
Hi Conner, that's looking very cool. I use my macrolenses sometimes with me extention tubes. That probe lens is on my bucket list, but not at the top. Thank you sharing your nice video.
Very interesting video, I just started to be really interesting in macro, so now looked around for this lens to see what people thought about it. This video I liked a lot. and since I want to know more about macro, I will follow you 😀👍🙏
The next Peter McKinnon here guys with great action shots of the sky Conner I am so glad to meet you I have been following you for about a year now keep.making great video bro.
You are mistaken on the aperture with extension tubes. Every tube you put on changes the f-stop of the lens, how much depends on the focal length of the lens, but you can easily gom from an f2.8 to f8 or slower which is why it is never recommended to use more than two or three tubes at any one time. Possible to do it, but the lens can get very dark. Put an extension tube on and that f2.8 is no longer an f2.8 lens :)
I take it your videos are for experienced photographers or videographers, I had no idea what you were talking about half the time other than seeing your video comparisons. Is this more for people in the advertising industry getting up close seriously clear product shots?
My channel will focus on both types of creators. Sometimes I will geek out and go in depth and other times I will make it easily digestable for newer creators
There is a MASSIVE difference between these two lol. The laowa produces such unique results it's well worth the money. You really should be comparing this with the ashtori probe lens.
I find the sigma 18 to 35 f1.8 with RF adaptor on my R5 is awesome for macro work and the field of view covers the full frame. F8 is the sweetspot for good DOF and autofocus photo or video. I did not need to buy the probe lens.
Sweet! Honestly the tubes simply extend the lens from the sensor so I would just find ones that fit your mount and use those. Don't expect to get any with decent autofocus and plan to manual focus most shots. I have many friends with wide variety of tubes and they all seem to perform the same
Wow...I didn’t think you could convince me out of the probe lens but you did especially with the GoPro hack....lol! Thank you I’m gonna use the money for a drone or onewheel now
Happy to help!! Ohh man I want a onewheel pretty bad but damn are they expensive. Also wanting to get into FPV drone flying. Let me know which one you pick! Thank you so much for watching and supporting. Means the world!
@@jimenezvisuals5707 Thanks man! Those tubes are freaking awesome. I gotta get some that are mine. I had an awesome fellow filmer/editor lend them to me ;) Thanks man!
Sorry for the super late response! I’m just getting back to posting on UA-cam. But it does depend on how close you are able to get the light to the subject. But yes I would say a 200W light with some bounces will be plenty. If you’re shooting at a high frame rate you may need to bring up the ISO though
Yes you can get macro tubes for any camera. Just make sure the mount is correct. Since I have sony I get macro tubes with the E-Mount. Since you have canon I think you need the EF Mount
I think I can :) I did. But you are correct. You do need another lens in order for the macro tubes to be used. That being said, most creators already have other lenses that are not specifically for Macro shooting. So I am comparing the cheapest way to get macro compared to the more expensive option of investing in a whole new lens.
when you compromise you will always say things like "it`s gonna get the same but it`s gonna be pretty close" :) that`s why you pay $1600 to get the exact what you want instead of $35

I agree! But at the time I didnt have the money or resources. I dont have the probe lens anymore but i truly regret selling it
4:07 Doesn't the f-stop decrease if you increase the distance to the sensor?
You do lose some f-stops as you make the lens further from the sensor.
Great comparison.
Thank you!!

Yup! It will fit anything with the sony e mount
Do the Macro tubes you posted work with canon as well? If not what is a Canon alternative?
Yes you can get macro tubes for any camera. Just make sure the mount is correct. Since I have sony I get macro tubes with the E-Mount.
Since you have canon I think you need the EF Mount
Hi! I know nothing about videography, but i want to record eyelashes. Do i just buy the tubes and stick it on my canon? How do i do this...
