    Great video and glad to see it was an easy fix.
    I once repaired an exercise bike that a family member bought on ebay for much less than it was worth as it was labelled faulty. It probably cost around a grand new and could measure everything including vital signs. It turned out to be a loose connector between the power supply and LCD display module at the top.

    Love these easy repairs, it took me an hour to watch this vid 'cause my internet service is hopeless, wish it was as easy to fix, as wiggling a connector :>)...good points about these types of bulbs, You can learn more on UA-cam in 5 minutes than in a week in the library. thanx

      Sounds to me like you need a new internet provider!
      Some fixes are easy, and some not so easy, like the mechanical problems I have had on VCR and DAT machines. Of a soft start capacitor on the plasma set I fixed. It looked simple but it took about 4 hours of scratching me head, and going on a wild goose chase before I found the right path.

    Thanks for putting up this video! I had a problem with my Projector too (which is the same model) and this was a great tutorial on how to tear it apart to fix it (and putting it back together again :D)

    Easy repair...always the best! I agree, the Epson also appears to have a green cast whereas the ViewSonic has better color rendition, contrast and crashes the blacks better...

      JacksJunkDotCom The two use totally different technologies LCD vs DLP.In an LCD unit the light from the lamp shines through the 3 LCD panels, and the liquid crystals in the pixels act as shutters to regulate the light. Even when they are closed, there is some light that leaks through.DLP on the other hand is a reflective panel, with in this projector 786432 microscopic mirrors that can tilt towards or away from the lens. DLP always provide much better contrast than LCD.The complaint that some people have with some DLP systems is the color strobing that can be seen on systems that use a slower refresh rate.I have a DLP TV that uses RGB LED PHLATIGHT as the light source. It operates at 3,000 frames per second, and there is no color rainbows if you shift your eye side to side when looking at white text on a black screen like what is present in slower color wheel systems. The better DLP units uses a 14,400 RPM color wheel, and rainbows were barely noticeable on those, but the slower 9,000 RPM, yes you could see the flicker if you looked for it.Still I would take a little flicker any day over a washed out picture.

    Thanks for another interesting video =) I didn't know that the bulbs in these projectors worked that way - with the timer fuse / resistor etc.

      Not all of them use it. Samsung for example does not, but Sony and others do.
      Usually it is internal to the lamp housing, or inside the glass.
      Some TVs and projectors you just need to go into the menu and reset it to remove the nag screen to replace the lamp. I remember a friend that years ago his lamp came up with the message to replace the lamp and then it went out. So he bought a new lamp to "test" the ballast, and then put the old lamp back in and ran it untill it was really dim, and then put in the new lamp. A few months later the message came up that his new lamp was worn out, and then it shut down.
      I got a good laugh out of it, because this guy is the cheapest person I have ever met, and karma bit him in the ass on this one, as he had a perfectly good bulb that the projector wouldn't run.

    I have owned an InFocus DLP projector and was very happy with it. However, although I believe also DLP CAN provide a better picture, I am staying the hell away from it. My DLP chip has failed and it has provided me with white spots appearing off the screen. Due to this, I am going to give 3LCD Epson a try. I'll just have to be very careful with the filters. I'd replace the DLP chip but it costs a fortune for what is a projector made between 2008-2010.

    Thanks for this excellent fault diagnosis - as usual. I have a newer Epson projector (model 5040ub) the bulb doesn't come on but it flashes light codes for "internal projector error" (I'd expect it to code for lamp issue but alas). In all cases where the bulb doesn't strike would you look to the power ballast as the likely cause, regardless of make or model?

    Hi I wanted to know if you charge to repair projector. I have epson 3020 that has a couple of issues. Yellow spot, slightly misaligned, and power down after 3-4 minute happened after I changed the bulb.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 років тому

      +boyd jensen Did you use an original Epson bulb or one from Ebay?If you used a generic bulb, that is more likely your problem. The alignment of the burner in the lamp is critical. These lamps are hand made and hand aligned, and the principle company that makes them is Philips, and they are all done by craftsmen. That is why they cost what they do. The knock off lamps from China don't have the same quality control. I have seen more projectors that were f---ed up by bad lamps. The problem is heat. They bad ones the light beam is not centered properly, due to alignment. and that first causes poor screen illumination, but the real problem is that hot spot, rather than go through the optics and into off to the screen ends up focused somewhere where it is not wanted, such as the edge of the LCD panel, or off center on one of the dichroic mirrors. This unwanted heat will melt plastic, damage the LCD panel, and can trigger over temperature protection and shut it down. I can't stress enough, only use the original manufactures lamp. Yes it is going to cost a lot of money. My projector the lamp cost half what the projector cost, but it is better to spend half what the projector cost on a lamp as opposed to a new projector! I have seen several that have been damaged this way. Another thing you need to do is clean the air filter. All projectors have them, and they are all accessible to clean. Go look at my video Epson pro cinema 6030 and you will see where the filter is. On that one the owner neglected to clean the air filter, and ended up with a yellow spot along the edge of the picture. Restricted airflow, and dirt that got through the dirty filter accumulated on the blue panel, caused a hot spot, and ultimately panel failure. I did a tear down of a Samsung 46" DLP projector that the owner had put in an aftermarket lamp, and resulting hot spot cause by a misaligned lamp caused the color wheel to shatter, and the TV to end up in the recycler. All for saving 100 the TV went in the garbage. Happens all the time.

    it was a generic bulb.i wanted to know if you repair that problem and about how much does it typically cost.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 років тому

      +boyd jensen If you are getting the yellow spot issue the LCD block is probably shot, and that is an expensive part. For the projector featured in this video I think I charged the business that owned it 100 to repair it, and they were very happy. The other Epson the customer did not repair it, because it turned out that the unit had a 3 year warranty and the unit was still under warranty so it was replaced. I do pair repairs for sure, but without actually evaluating the unit there is no way to tell what it would cost to repair it.

    This is a great video. Thanks a lot. By the way l have an Epson EB 824 Projector which does not project well. The lamp blew up as a result of overheating. A new lamp has been installed but still, no clear pictures or Videos.
    In your Video , you mentioned that the LCD pannel might destroy if overheating occurs. Is the LCD pannel repairable? Or is the mainboard is destroyed. Hope to hear from you . Thanks once again.

      @12voltvids  9 років тому

      There are a few components in LCD projectors that can be damaged if the air filter gets dirty, and causes over heating. The optical prism which is between the lamp and the LCD can be damaged by heat, or it just may be dusty, and need a good cleaning. These projectors have 3 LCD panels, one for red, another for green, and a 3rd for blue. A failure of a panel would affect a single color, if the entire picture is dim or foggy, I would suspect dust or smoke film (if the unit is used in a room where people smoke, or there is a wood burning fireplace) has accumulated on the optics internal.
      Also, did you buy an original lamp, or an after market Chinese made POS?
      These lamps are precision devices, hence the high price of an original lamp.
      Knock off lamps are not built to the same precision, which can result in hot spots, or a poor picture. I recently had a DLP set come in that the owner had bought a 50.00 bulb off the internet. It didn't fit well, but his son made it fit. He said the picture was never as bright as the original, and a few months later they heard a "crack" and the set turned off. I opened it up to find the color wheel shattered, and now the set was uneconomical to repair. The root cause, an incorrect lamp was installed, which wasn't cooled properly. This caused heat to build up on the color filter wheel, which caused it to warp, and when the wheel is spinning at 14,500 RPM, bad things happened.

      That is very kind of you for the rapid response.
      The Unit is used in our church to project Hymnals and some videos.The lamp was bought from
      www.beamerlampen-kaufen.de/beamer-ersatzlampen/epson/eb-824/alda-pq-beamerlampe-fuer-epson-eb-824-projektoren-lampe-mit-gehaeuse/a-5821/ .
      The lamp itself is ok.I think I have to open it and do some cleaning as you suggested.
      Is there anything to be careful of when one is trying to open the unit? What are the substances use to clean the internal optics? Is it possible to change the optical prism when it is damage?
      It was an expensive Projector and the guy who was responsible did'nt care for it. I just want to get it work well for the church in oder to avoid new purchase. I will keep you up to date but your advice is highly welcome.
      In Germany we say "DANKESCHÖNE" = THANK YOU VERY MUCH

      L A-P
      You can wipe clean most of the internal optics with a dry cloth, and use compressed air to blow out the dust. You don't want to be using any types chemicals to clean the optics as these could attack polymers and plastics used inside. Depending on the projector the prism might be available separately, but on many it is part of the optical block because it is a precision aligned component.
      A lot of times you can just get in there with a cotton swab, and use that to clean off the surface dust and dirt, and then use compressed air, such as "dust off" to blow it all out. I have fixed many a projector by just blowing all the dust out and not touched anything inside.

    Great Video!! I have an Epson powerlite 1915 & by using your method of troubleshooting it seems like my issue could be the ballast, with the lamp cover removed & by pressing the safety switch I can see the lamp trying to turn on but it flickers just like a florescent ceiling light, so it hesitates to turn on. The Red lamp light comes on & I have to unplug it/ plug it back in & do it several times before it does turn on.When it actually does turn on it works like a champ! My question to you is what State do you live in & if I wanted to ship my projector out to you to get it fixed is that a possibility? Thank you for your time & hope to hear from you soon.. God Bless ---- Alex...

      +boyd jensen They are expensive. I don't know the price off hand as I have never ordered or replaced, however I would imagine that the optical block would be most of the cost of the projector. I have DLP projector that the DLP chip is starting to fail, and the part if over 300.00, so needless to say I am not about to replace it. I will run it until I can't stand watching it anymore and then toss it.

      Your right.. i removed the lamp and it seems one of the connecting wire to the lamp became loose.. i re clipped it with pliers and put it back again.. its now working fine. It has 86 hrs of lamp life. Does it mean the lamp is not replaceable yet?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому

      Those lamps are generally rated for 200 - 3000 hours operation. The projector will tell you when it is time to replace it with an on screen message. They typically have a timer that is reset when a new lamp is installed. (the new lamps have a chip resistor built into the base that initially provides a specific load to the ballast to reset the timer then the fuse link blows open so the unit can operate. This is why it is important to never stick in a new lamp to test it. I know someone that did that. When his set shut down, the fool bought a new lamp, fired the set up, then put the old lamp back in and ran the old lamp until it got really dim before putting in the new lamp. Within a few months the new lamp was displaying the message telling him that there was only 50 hours remaining, and then it shut off. When I told him what happened he was really pissed. I was able to trick the unit into resetting by getting him to put a new lamp, and measuring the resistance on the pins. It was quite a low resistance 27 ohms comes to mind. Anyway I stuck a resistor of that value on the burnt out lamp, plugged it in, the timer reset, and then I put the newer lamp in, and he got the standard shop service rate of 95.00 to fix his stupidity. (That was when I was working in the shop, so I didn't set the rate$)

      +boyd jensen I don't accept stuff shipped in because I have been stung in the past. I have a VCR that was sent from the states, and I was clipped a 40.00 brokerage fee by UPS to clear customs. Even though the owner of it agreed to pay for all shipping both ways, I was still on the hook for these additional charges, and for that matter a year later the unit is all boxed up waiting for the repair fee and return shipping. Should that ever arrive I will just break even. The unit arrived at my door and was left by the UPS guy. You can imagine my shock when 2 weeks later I get a bill for customs clearance. So in light of that I don't accept ship in repairs. For carry in repairs I provide the part number of parts required, and the owner orders and supplies all parts. I charge a nominal fee for diagnostics and repairs, and make the bulk of my money from the money generated on the YT channel.
