  • Creating subtitles might seem easy, but there are so many technical guidelines and linguistic rules you might not know about!
    Let me try and explain to you what it's really like while I create captions for a client :)
    Subtitles available in English, Italian, French and Spanish.

    One thing I've learned to do is if it's something that's just text and not editing based, you can open the subtitles in a program like word and spellcheck and find and replace there as well have it dictate the subtitles back to you if you're not comfortable with the built in editing tools of Subtitle Edit.

    You don't need to press play and stop until you faint. You just use SPACE on your keyboard, it will do it for you. It is a toggle key for play/stop. And you don't need to use cut/paste so much, you can play the sequence and see what part should be in the next line, then SPLIT it in two. No more cut/paste, it is exhausting. There is the split command in the context menu in Waveform.
    You also have 'get paid' text you typed in the previous and the next line.

      That's my workflow, it's not a rule but just how I personally work and feel good about it! And don't worry, I corrected everything before exporting the file, I didn't want the video to be too long :)

      @@subtitlingwithclaudia Everything is OK. But your video wouldn't be longer if you hit the SPACE key for play/stop, instead of hitting play and stop with your mouse. And it won't be longer if you put the cursor where you want to split the line, then SPLIT LINE context menu option, instead of cutting, making space, pasting, etc. Your work is totally inefficient this way. When I work, I just keep my left hand on space, right hand is on the mouse. I use buttons as little as possible.
      But, I must thank you. In this great program, Subtitle Editor, one big thing is missing. When you need to make a new line, you must go to the button 'insert new subtitle at video position', which is tedious, you must click that button on the far left side of the screen, whenever you need a new line. It should be part of the context menu in waveform. I suggested to the author of this program to change this. It is very important to be in Subtitle Editor.

      @@cyberyoda1611 It seems the author added an option to add a subtitle from the context menu, although it doesn't automatically set the duration like when you use the button.
      You can also press Shift-F9. This shortcut can be changed in Options > Settings... > Shortcuts

    It would have been very nice if you had gone into more detail about how the software actually works as far as adjusting the timing and text and making them work together correctly, or those of us who already know how to do subtitles but need the techniques.

      @@subtitlingwithclaudia Yes, I did, and I find that you skip over the technical part very quickly. I am an experienced translator and subtitle who just needs to learn to edit MT subtitles in the software quickly. I can't find any tutorials that show that. For example, when I split or merge lines in the text box, are those changes also made in the audio flow, and vice versa?

      @@BarefootBeachEscapes-4u yes absolutely, every change you make on the list is automatically applied to the audio part as well

    How can I accurately synchronize subtitle text with audio waves in a video?

    • @subtitlingwithclaudia
      @subtitlingwithclaudia  4 місяці тому +1

      You can start with automatic subtitles but then you'll need to adjust them manually. Just work directly over the sound waves, you can move each subtitle portion back and forth to adjust it 🙂
