"I don't necessarily think that the talent, or how good a group of musicians is, is necessarily directly proportional to the size of their trophy cabinet." - Alex Turner
If you look back at other interviews with Alex, he has always had a hard time getting words out. A lot of people are like that. He doesn't have to be on drugs. People need to calm down.
True. Watch the interviews over the years and you can see that Alex is someone whose mind is whirring when he gets asked a question. You can see in his eyes that he's trying to bring concepts in his mind out of his mouth. But when he sings he is confident and without hesitation because you;ve rehearsed it a million times. Many introverts - not sure if he is one or not - struggle with the exact same thing.
I am actually impressed by how deep this dude talks, aside of his stage persona, he actually seems to be a very profund individual and I admire him for that. The Monkeys deserve their fame; but as Alex himself said, their talent doesn't necessarily have to be proportional to the amount of prizes and nominations they've had.
how is this awkward? because they aren't saying a list of people they need to thank and how amazing it is just like everyone else? these guys are realistic. they have NO ONE to thank but their fans and familys that have helped them get to where they are. no one else matters. it seems like they just want to do what they love without questions being asked and it's refreshing because almost everyone who is famous they love the attention and these guys don't. this is 'awkward' for some people because they aren't used to people not sucking up everyones ass.
as incredibly articulate as alex talks, at the same time it seems he doesn't want to come off as pretentious saying "big words" or whatever, but i think that's just the way his mind works and he can't help it. like at 2:12, you can see after the word "conception," he rushes the rest of the sentence out so as not to bore anyone. he speaks so complexly and it's fascinating. i probably seem weird as fuck talking about him like this though, i just regard him extremely highly lmao
People can stop saying he's on drugs just cos has he has difficulty speaking. I bet his mind naturally runs 1000 miles an hour and he is uncomfortable speaking to the press. Plus he's always had a very hard time speaking to interviewers. Maybe he is on drugs, we don't know, but stop insulting his inability to have a clear conversation.
My favorite part is Alex's response after the interviewer asks what young bands could do to 'become the next Arctic Monkeys' "Well you just...like..pick up the guitar, quote unquote. Like whether it's actually a guitar or not I don't know, but you just make a start don't ya, I think? and then i-i...cuz tha ha.. ya know I think is it. Some people dream of that like, their whole life or whatever, but i-i-its not like that for everybody and eh I don't know you...em. What am I trying to say?......."
I think he's trying to say is that , as a teenager you have a simple mind if thinking where a musician can be and what needs to be done in order to become famous . But the only way to actually see if it's for your future , Is to quote on quote"Pick Up the Guitar " . Then from that point on you'll get the idea of how actually difficult it is to get "there "along side the famous and rich . Over time you'll forget how it all started as a kid to an adult because it sucks you up if your roots . Deep down Al is a good person but fame and fortune took a bit out of him
I don't know why people are saying "Alex is high" or "this interview is so awkward." Alex always talks like this and I talk like this all of the time too and never have taken drugs before. Alex even said himself that he basically thinks awards are a bunch of shit and I agree.
I think i was the only one who think Jamie looks so handsome in his blue suit, love arctic monkeys don't care what people say they are amazing, and they always been like that and won't change just beacuse the people (most doesn't even listen to their music) say they were wrong.
Wise words from Alex, This band fought for what they wanted, they got it, they are now what they dreamed. People, don't get jealous about others people success, enjoy it.
I love the fact that if the interviewer tells them their name they actually call them by it. I just think it makes the interview a lot more special and it makes it more down to earth as if they were talking without the cameras on. I saw that in a lot more other interviews, and I love it.
Yeah Alex always likes to call the interviewer by their name! (Once he didn't know who from the Absolute Radio crew was interviewing him so he called them Absolute Radio, it was cute.)
i love their "is this on" joke :D i don't know, you can say about them what ever you like but in my opinion alex turners writing is brilliant, their music is amazing and as long as they keep up with that musical stuff and as long as they are being nice to their fans everythings fine. they have always been awkward at interviews, i feel like this has gotten some kind of joke between them. a lot of people are taking their behaviour way too serious
Eventhough he's quite pretentious, I like how he really takes the time to answer the questions properly and think through what he's going to say. His answers are really genuine and meaningful to him. I think his 'act' can make people doubt his intelligence, but I can see a deep, intellectual man inside there. :)
Why does confidence make everyone so uneasy? Is everyone else so insecure that it makes them so sick to see someone who thinks thinks that they're awesome! Jeez, why does someone else's confidence bother you people so much. I personally think it's quite refreshing and entertaining to see someone who loves themselves. All that humility and insecurity and beating up on your self is so boring, negative and typical!
I think its adorable how awkward Alex is when being interviewed. He writes so beautifully but when put on the spot with questions, he can never really explain himself. All the interviews I've seen have been the same way.
I didn't find it awkward, actually this gave me kind of an explanation and a bit of an excuse for what Alex did in his best album speech. I think I can finally understand him (a little bit, still a weirdo but in a good way) because the first time I saw his speech I got really confused. I like when they're like that - when Alex seems a bit nervous and makes too large pauses in sentences. Despite sometimes he can be a bit of a cunt in my opinion he's a nice, polite man, just sometimes a bit sarcastic. And I like it, he's weird and outstanding. I think there's a wise, sensitive guy hidden behind this mask of badassness with very interesting state of mind and that's what attracts me to him so strongly. I wanna see this side of him more often.
Just listen to the Submarine soundtrack and you'll see the "sensitive guy" side of him. I think he's really shy and do this things to hide his shyness, like use sarcasm and all this bad guy stuff, and then people thinks he's arrogant when he's just trying to feel confortable with the situation and hidding behind the mask.
Am i the only one who finds Alex's interviews hilarious and feel like he's just taking the piss. To be honest they are all down to earth which you can see by looking the their 'View from the...' series on their official YT channel although it is a bit old. Also you never hear stories of him being an arsehole to people and the only reports made about him are when he makes speeches.
stop saying he's drunk all the time This is just who he is, he's awkward in front of cameras, he can't just express his mind as fully as he'd like to i think, because of the pressure of beeing there.. you can tell how nervous he gets
True this did seem awkward but I agree with Damon Albarn who said "talking about music is like dancing about architecture" or something to that effect!
i don't think a lot of people realize that Alex is like this in every interview i believe he said in a previous interview that he has trouble speaking aloud as you can tell. When you see him act like some chauvinistic asshole in my opinion i see him changing his appearance and attitude for their newest album. I don't think he is genuinely that person. AM is a very sexual album and i think he is portraying himself to fit it's content as shall we say a sex god. If looked back on, Alex changes his appearance per album released, my favorite period would have to be humbug.
I hate so much how much I love this band and the members individually and their personalities and how complex Alex's mind works. And I hate it because it's not natural. I'm so emotionally attached to them and I don't even know them, and that's not natural. It's not even real.
no.. they're definitely really drunk.. but they don't care about interviews or awards, that's why they seem so awkward and they're so bad at talking in interviews, they're really bad at publicity which makes them genius. over all they're farr from arrogant, they're really cool dudes at the end of the day
haha love it :) every time they have an interview they act so weird and thats so funny. alex sometimes doesn't know how to express himself very well while jamie, nick and matt are just standing there counting sheeps :D eventually matt says something when he sees that alex lost himself in his words.
I really wish people would stop acting like they know them. You don't know whether Alex is a jerk or not, if he's taking drugs or not, if they are going to split or not, if the other members of the band are tired with Alex's behaviour... YOU.DON'T.KNOW. So stop being judgmental and acting like you do. Their music is still amazing and that should be what everyone focuses on.
Does anyone know what the gesture he does right at the end is- @3:44? He's repeating what Nick's said ('keep music alive, man') and then he says something else I can't make out ('what was that?', maybe?) Are they quoting summat or ???
it's not really awkward, the interviewer is just asking stupid questions. "are you excited for the gigs ahead?" what are you expecting them to say? "no not at all, we hate playing live but it's part of the job"

Yeah exactly
agreed.
He's def high
He isn't drunk, he's like that in every interview. And if you think they're arrogant you should see Oasis
FBPstudios Sorry but I don't think Noel Gallagher has 'style' when it comes to being outspoken
Tim Senna Noel is funny though, and despite the arrogant, he's surprisingly witty and in-the-know
FBPstudios As long as their music is still great, who gives a fuck.
averagejoereviews Yeah I give you that 90% of the time Noel is funny and in touch, but every so often he says something really annoying
FBPstudios
Oasis had style? Oasis copied The Beatles all the time! Liam thinks he saw John Lennon's ghost!
If you look back at other interviews with Alex, he has always had a hard time getting words out. A lot of people are like that. He doesn't have to be on drugs. People need to calm down.
LARRY YES OMG
if i spoke as eloquently and articulately as him, i would take even longer to get my words out. listening to him talk is fascinating
