the epitome of cool jazz...5/4 time just swings like no other!! sweet stuff...saw him live in '91..most of the band had passed on except Dave...always the best in jazz here!
This opened up jazz to the wider world in 1961. Everyone talked about it, whistled it, sang it, and played whatever they played or tried to play. I was a teenager at the time and marvelled at it even tough I was into 3-chord rock before. Nowadays in 2016 people still talk about it and recognise it even if it's the only jazz track they know. Just before Dave B. died he said on TV that he got the rhythm from the way horses ran on the farm he grew up on. Geniuses.
We've lost an important part of our culture an d a vital piece of our culture. RIP Dave Brubeck. You were a true innovator. Please play Take Five when you get to heaven.
very cool comment. I think thats what always made jazz and music in general special to me. Talent recognizes talent, and fans enjoy to hear it all and brings everyone together. Always been special to me in that light having been raised in a multicultural house.
God they're so cool! I love how chill Joe's style is and what he does, going from pounding out the solo straight back to the main rhythm without even skipping a beat at 3:17-3:23, like it's no biggie.
Thank God the 60s came along… so that a great African-American could openly play his thing… side note… I was born in 1950 and the 60s were freaking GREAT!!!!!!(you gotta believe it) !!!!!!!
I love it how they all look utterly calm while playing this song. Contrast: when I play the drums I sometimes loose my sticks and they fly god knows where :P
One of the greatest things about jazz as a genre is the amount of freedom involved! I never get bored collecting different performances of these guys wailing on this wonderous piece, because the essence of jazz is never having to play a tune the same way twice! Check Joe Morello's solo here - it is a completely amazing reinvention of the famous one on the Time Out album - Dave and Paul also do the same in more subtle ways!!
This song holds 2 favorites for me. Firstly its one of my favorite Jazz songs, and secondly it has one of my favorite drum solo's of all time. Brilliant song.
Jazz has a history of some of THE greatest drum solos in the history of mankind, in my opinion! Chick Corea's Electric Band made me witness to one of them live...wow...!
The thing I find incredible is that the drummer was wearing a suit and a tie, not even breaking a drop of sweat! The solo he did is damn hard, keeping the tempo on a 5 time beat is so hard! Just look at his hi hat it virtually never stops, and mostly it stays in the right tempo. I'm not a Jazz fan but we have to be in awe of the sheer musical ability Jazzmen have. Brilliant
I've heard this song in many movies and I recall hearing it on the Simpsons. It took me forEVER to find the song...and here it is! Thank you for posting it up! I'd give you 10 stars for this if I ever got the chance
i love the style and the mutual respect they show, dave turned around to watch joe's solo and he even forgot to enter right after he finished it...so into it... just brilliant
my favorite drum solo of all time ❤
I'll give this piece a 5/4
One of the baddest and iconic jazz tunes ever recorded. Simply brilliant.
joe is the best drummer i have ever heard. he has more taste, swing, style, and attitude than anyone else (except maybe bonham or rich!)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE BRUBECK!!! 90 Years old today, and he's still playing. Saw him perform a couple of years ago! Many more DAVE!
Dave, Paul and Eugene were quite fortunate - they got to see Joe play like this every night ~
Probably my favorite drum solo of all time.
Fantastic!!! Joe Morrello looks so relaxed, he might as well be waiting for a bus.
And I must not forget the Senator, Mr. Eugene Wright!!!
I love to come back here occasionally to read the comments from folks who've just discovered this video. And yes, Joe Morello was way beyond awesome.
Joe Morello is such a genius. Tasty, musical smooth. Brilliant!!
The one and only TAKE FIVE. I was just a kid when I first heard this at my very cool Uncle Ray's house. Turned me into a jazz fan forever.
Only Joe Morello could make a single stroke roll so cool. My stepdad who is a jazz pianist said he once saw him do a double stroke roll on a pillow!
merci à tous ceux qui postent ces chefs-d'oeuvres que je pensais ne plus jamais réécouter j'ai même la vidéo par dessus le marché.
OMG. I have been listening to this album since art class 1969 and have never seen them perform "live"! Brilliant!!!!! Thank you UA-cam!
the epitome of cool jazz...5/4 time just swings like no other!! sweet stuff...saw him live in '91..most of the band had passed on except Dave...always the best in jazz here!
Life, Joy & Jazz!!! Thanks Mr. Desmond! And to You, Mr. Brubeck!
So much class and sophistication that you just don't get in music these days.
Sad day... rest in peace, Mr. Brubeck. You have left us a lot of presents to listen to for years to come.
Morello is a freakin' GENIUS!!!
Still so beautiful after all these years . 🌷🌹🌷🌹🌷🌹😃😊🎷
The drumming stryle of Joe Morrello on this Take Five cut is the Best!! RIP Mr. Joe Morrello
Immortal music,,, in a thousand years from now people will listen to this music and say : " those were the days,,,, we were born too late,,"...

I cant't even remenber the first time I heard this song. It's just a part of this world.
Great job!
Heaven is now a better place! You're already missed here on earth. RIP Mr. Brubeck.

Thank you for putting the original on you tube. None of the other versions are as good.
The was freaking dope. My 5-year-old stumbled onto it while searching "Jazz songs" with Google voice search. I'm glad he loves music.
This is my favorite Joe Morello solo. He goes absolutely savage on that snare drum.
R.I.P. Dave Brubeck, may your work live on forever.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MISTER BRUBECK,GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY,THANK FOR THIS UNIQUE MUSIC,look at Joe Morrelo the drummer,WOOOOW WHAT A SOLO,SUPER GOOD

Way cool .... never skips the original beat.
This is my number 1 song , i love it , and i love Joe Morello
Great drum solo by one the best. And naturally the Desmond saxman and the whole group was superb.
Sad,sad news today indeed!
At least this beautifull song has earned Dave Brubeck some very well deserved immortality.
RIP...
Thank God the 60s came along… so that a great African-American could openly play his thing… side note… I was born in 1950 and the 60s were freaking GREAT!!!!!!(you gotta believe it) !!!!!!!
この素晴らしさを表現できる言葉が思い付かない。
J'adorerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Des bon moments j'ai vécu sur cette interprétation!
I love this jazz piece!!Thanks Edgar for share!!!! Kisses Perla.
One of the best jazz pieces ever written, and there were many good ones.
Introduced the whole world to jazz. What a talented bunch.
Your story, WOW, cooooool! That is not something you will ever forget. Jealous, but I was 4. I did not start clubing till 6. ha ha.
This one's the best of all the Take Five vids imo.
Joe morello s economy of motion is beautiful to watch. What a rhythm explored majestically by four masters. Timeless. Take five for
My world just changed! Morello.. wow!
Probably the best/coolest group of all time....in any music......
I love it how they all look utterly calm while playing this song. Contrast: when I play the drums I sometimes loose my sticks and they fly god knows where :P
thats where you need to get to..anyone can flail around and think they sound good..you have to be able to do it and then act like it's nothing.
or while acting like it's nothing you haven't done in your sleep already
I love Brubeck watchin' Joe on the solo!--Ha!
This is real music!! Joe Morello, what a monster!
so much class, so clean, so fresh, so smooth, so good.
What an epic 🥁 solo by Morello 😍

Lobe Dave Brubeck and his numerous compositions.
God rest your soul...Dave. As you join the great ones in Heaven. One of the absolute greatest composers, arrangers, and of course Pianist.
Happy 90th Birthday Dave!
Timeless, Just Great!
WOW !!! so much said in such a subtle concise way.
Heard this on an episode of Simpsons a few days ago and it made my day. Fell in love with Brubeck all over again.
Still way too cool! I have loved this since I was 13. Bought the album with babysitting money when I was 14.
The battery it's just amazing!!!
RIP Dave! Your music will shine everyday!
A work of art! Released on August 28, 1961, reaching # 25 on October 9.
I feel like we just lost Mozart or Bach. Rest In Peace, Dave. Take five minutes to play this when you arrive to paradise !
Except Paul Desmond wrote this piece of music. You know that right?
This song holds 2 favorites for me. Firstly its one of my favorite Jazz songs, and secondly it has one of my favorite drum solo's of all time.
Brilliant song.

Yes and also the time signature of the song is 5/4 !!! Very innovative at the time to use 5 beats in a bar.

c'est splendide, je go l'apprendre dès maintenant ! ^^
I've heard this song in many movies and I recall hearing it on the Simpsons. It took me forEVER to find the song...and here it is!
Thank you for posting it up! I'd give you 10 stars for this if I ever got the chance
I've been listen to Take Five since I was a kid.
Joe plays 5/4 as smooth as the best drummers play 4/4.
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
i love the style and the mutual respect they show, dave turned around to watch joe's solo and he even forgot to enter right after he finished it...so into it... just brilliant
that is one of the best drum solos
Magnificent ! True perfection of harmonious chaos at its best!! Love it!
Oh my god if i could only play this on the drums.........gasp!!
Um dos melhores clássicos do Jazz de todos os tempos, numa excelente performance, gostei muito!
