I love how free he is. He doesn't feel any obligation to act like a normal person who makes sense in normal ways-- everything is music, everything is rhythm, everything is experience, everything is art.
actually if you listen to Indian musicians, they have a way to "sing the rhythms of the tabla" or "vocal percussion" to mimic each of the different types of finger/hand strokes used when they play a set of tabla. That's probably an older form of beat boxing. The term used is Konnakol. Check out Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, they are probably the two best contemporary tabla players. I think Trilok is more original as he strays away from traditional Indian sounds and rhythms as he incorporates other music forms. Konnakol is taught to elementary school kids in India as they have to be able to "sing" the parts before they can learn how to play the instrument. it helps internalize the rhythms better. top percussionists can improvise rhythms and then play them after they sing them.
It took many, many years of listening to all kinds of music before I was musically intelligent enough to comprehend the depth and ability of this man's music.
I was hooked the first time I heard him. The song was My favorite things. I thought he would look like Bing Crosby. Imagine my reaction to finding this video.
I took a jazz class and we talked about him and scatting for a couple days. As someone who's played music for a long time I was captivated by his talent and skill. Sometimes what he does is funny or strange compared to modern music but no one can deny his skill. I think him being okay with being a little different and strange is what makes him so captivating to me. He doesn't care what he looks like he's just doing his thing and making his music.
Al Jarreau is the personification of jazz ... and truly a gift to us all. This rendition of Take 5 is mind blowing. What a legend, and he will be missed immensely.
His whole freaking body is an instrument have you seen this man Bust a Rhyme like Busta Rhymes? ENTHRALLING is the ONLY way to describe this UNIQUE TALENT!
The original Take Five by Dave Brubeck has always been my favorite piece of music. I just saw this version. My first thought seeing it before I listened was maybe it's not the same song. I mean how could anyone do a vocal of it, right? I was moved to tears. Unbelievable. Al Jarreau is a celestial being not of this earth.
Did anyone else forget to breathe because they were so immersed in this simply amazing music? We will never see talent like this again and I am glad I could be around to be part of it.
Apologies for the late reply. There is only a couple of songs that can ever do this to me. This one and a Grace Jones song. (And a couple of others that I perform).
If you see everything is going down the tubes. Music is no where near what it used to be both in singers and actual non-synthasized sounds/instruments.
People are clueless too. Do you know Cardi B got on the RollingStone cover her 1st year... something that took Prince years and years to do... imagine that.
No one wants to be different. Everyone is the same and copy cat. We had at the same time Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Patti Labelle, Anita Baker. Tell me who do we have now? Not even a single person even close. And please don't say Beyonce.. lol
It’s like watching God create vibrations in the Universe using Jarreau as the vessel!Amazing!! A hit replay musical Genius!!! We are so fortunate to have the music he brought us to lift us up and bring us joy.
If this performance had not been recorded, and someone tried to describe what happened, I would not believe it were possible. Al Jarreau, quite simply, is his craft. :)
+Edwin Stewart No way to describe is right. Not only his scat that's so amazing - he morphs into a ton of different musical instruments while being a living, breathing super jazz singer of all time. Watch some of his videos from the 70's up to the current day. He's just a joy that was created for our entertainment. There still are people out there that don't get it and I feel sorry for them. He is awesome!!!
A good drummer. You won't notice. You won't be distracted from the song. Because a good drummer plays FOR the music and not for himself. Also, standing ovation for that dudes range. Ohhh Lordy
This. Is. AMAZING!!! 😳 Human body instrument collection!! Harmony, melody, horn/brass solo, percussion, keys, all in one. Definitely Bobby McFerrin’s inspiration. 👍
As I recall, Al recording his first album at 36 years of age. By practically all standards, that is late for most musicians, but as Paul Mason once said 'We will sell no wine before its time!'
It's always been said that anyone can sing, but to scat is to turn to your voice into a musical instrument and no one did it better..... RIP Mr. Jarreau
40+ years ago a friend of mine worked at the Beacon theater and Al Jarreau was performing. I had never heard him before, only heard of him. I was there while he was practicing for the upcoming show and got to meet him backstage. Of course I stayed for the show. He absolutely blew me away. He was incredible!
WHOEVER PUT THUMBS DOWN FOR THIS MAGNIFICENT MAN AND ENTERTAINER A TRUE ARTIST THAT HE IS. IF YOU DONT THINK THAT THIS IS MUSIC THEN YOU KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC!!!!!
I remember this concert. I'd never heard of the guy. Saw the show on HBO or something. Never forgot Al Jarreau again after that. Simply the best. He's like a jazz trumpet or sax player and can damn near sing every lick you could put through a horn. I don't know if any of you know or remember that singer in Fifth Element. They used some synthesizer tricks to pull off that performance. Al Jarreau could do something like that without any synthesizer. A great imagination and a voice that could reproduce anything he could imagine. He's the king.
Real dappy player: she sitting on her front pouch, sipping on Coconut mix with sugar cane juice 🧃 Every time her mama wasn't indoors, he was lucky to walk by. One of the most gifted jazz groove artists of 21st century. Rest his high synergy Soul.
I first saw him when I was a child. I sat in amazement while he seamlessly defied the laws of physics in moving from lyrics to acoustics to percussion and floated your mind in an unbelievable world that he created. I will always love this man's incredible powers to transform me from all the thoughts that I knew then, and now! There has never been another like him, and I doubt there ever will!
I have never heard of Al Jareau. I played this and immediately thought 'what is this insane shit??' But four minutes later i'm absolutely transfixed. This must be what genius truly is. The ability to surpass lunacy and enter a new realm of breathtaking.
He was not only a great singer but a wonderful human being as well. He performed an amazing act of kindness that I witnessed, by singing this same tune 🙏🏽
this man do with his mouth what his body needs, and do with his body what his mouth sings. This is the perfect connection between music and a musician, he is not dancing voluntarily, he has to dance in order to feel what is necessary to sing like that.
The final part, where Tom Canning plays lots of chromatic stuff on the Rhodes and Al Jarreau goes deeper into tension and psychedelia, is so incredibly stunning that one feels sad when it finishes!
I like to pick out an intrument in a song and zone in on it. Once I do that with every instrument I sit back and listen to them all at once without straining...and that's when the song gets really good. No song is boring after that. Try it, man.
I bought this album in 76' as well as his earlier albums. He was an immense unique talent and in many ways under rated fusing jazz, vocalese and soul and it could be argued being a source of modern beatboxing. I had the privilege of seeing him perform live many times, a huge influence on mine and many others lives and greatly missed
That was live folks ! I was 10 years old when this came out, and I can say without question Jazz musicians and singers are the absolute best when it comes to performing live. Amazing performance by Brother Al Jarreau and his band.
How can anyone dislike this, he takes take five, possibly one of my favorite jazz songs to play on sax, and gives it a great groove and vocals that are so catchy!
Al Jarreau is the Greatest Jazz Singer of this era. The way he could change the sounds, mood, styles in his voice was amazing. There will be no other singer like him. I've had the pleasure of watching him in concert up close & personal, but this particular performance is SPECIAL. Since his death, I've become mesmerize with this set. Just UNBELIABLE & GREAT ALL IN ONE! It's amazing how the music transcends his being. How his voice or being becomes every instrument in the band & he does not hold back, doesn't care who watching, he was a professional at his craft & I will always miss Mr. Al Jarreau. One more note on THE MAN- My friends & i went to Central Park to see a free concert. On the card was Sly & The Family Stone. Holding true to form, Sly & the Family Stone never showed up, but in their place was Al Jarreau. You just wouldn't believe the cat calls and boos that came from the crowd, including myself and the group I was in. No one had heard of Al Jarreau. But once he started singing & performing we were stunned by what we were hearing from this singer that we never heard of. To say the least we never forgot who this singer was & I will always sing his praise to this day. This recording from 1976 is one of if not the best live videos I've seen of a performance. Thank You Al Jarreau & GOD bless you my brother for bringing JOY & HAPPINESS INTO OUR LIVES.
Some youngsters might have believed, that batboxing was something new, till they saw and HEARD this - and it was "musicboxing" as well! Fantastic - thanks for sharing!
Outstanding!! This 1976-77 era was the height of his super powers - the "Look to the Rainbow - Live in Europe" album, from this same tour, is among my all time favs - the performance of this song is even better here in this video, so thank you!
I'm a considerably young jazz singer who has grown up in jazz's unfortunate decline in popularity. This video in particular is what I show people to get them interested in jazz. I wish I could've seen Mr. Jarreau live, but unfortunately he was before my time. Rest in peace, you will not and can not be forgotten.
My top fave of Al Jarreau! Been THE biggest fan of Al Jarreau since my first concert in Philly in the 70's! Loved his shows during the Summer at The Mann Music Center during the 80's...still my go to artist for chill mode! Truly gifted vocally& musically!
This video shows the on stage live transmutation of a living person into a state of liquid music. top notch performance made me tears ! Thank you very much love !

I don't think I've ever smiled broader than I just did while listening to this! To have such control over your voice is simply amazing. I'm 14 years old, and it saddens me that I first hear of this genius now... after his demise.
Hi, please search Al Jarreau - Live 1976 CD (this song and other songs from this European tour (not oficially CD but it's fantastic, fantastic, excellent sound!).
The Master...Rest In Peace Al Jarreau. I have been with you since age 20 and now at age 60, I return to recall places I enjoyed your music, as well as people I shared it (you) with.
Heh... if you mean that place around 03:35, I must disappoint you. It's far away from 3 against 5. :) It's actually pretty easy "pattern". Just syncopated first beat and than 3rd and 5th beat in the rhythm. And because he claps the 5th last beat every time, he has a good rhythmical "feel" on the 1st, main beat... on the start of the bar (kind of he can hear 1st beat inside of his head).
Unbelievable, again and again! I've watched this video again and again and I never get bored! What a charisma, what a voice! Saw and heard him live in the 80's and can't forget that EXPERIENCE!
Whoever is on the Fender Rhodes knows how to PLAY that keyboard!!!! Beautiful playing!!! That whole band is nuts!! Miss ya Al Jarreau!!! You were the best!!!
I love how free he is. He doesn't feel any obligation to act like a normal person who makes sense in normal ways-- everything is music, everything is rhythm, everything is experience, everything is art.
Omg this comment right here perfectly expressed what drew me to Al!!!!
classic
Exactly💯✔️❤️ He doesn't let anyone put him in a box💯✔️👑
A real master!
Everything about him is Al Jarreau, simples.
Beat boxing before beat boxing was a thing. Rest well Al. You are missed.
He was scratching the track vocally before djs were 🙏
Didn't know Al was gone . I'll see him when I Git there . P.S. When did he go too the upper room ?

that's what I was thinking before beat boxing
actually if you listen to Indian musicians, they have a way to "sing the rhythms of the tabla" or "vocal percussion" to mimic each of the different types of finger/hand strokes used when they play a set of tabla. That's probably an older form of beat boxing. The term used is Konnakol. Check out Trilok Gurtu, Zakir Hussain, they are probably the two best contemporary tabla players. top percussionists can improvise rhythms and then play them after they sing them.
My dad described Al’s music to me when I was very young, as,”using your voice as an instrument.” He was not wrong!
It took many, many years of listening to all kinds of music before I was musically intelligent enough to comprehend the depth and ability of this man's music.

Listen to the version by Grover Washington as well. Shows what a brilliant composition this was.
Paul Desmond is the real compositor....
Have a listen to Carmen McRae version.... excellent vocals.

I don't think I've ever smiled broader than I just did while listening to this!
To have such control over your voice is simply amazing.
I'm 14 years old, and it saddens me that I first hear of this genius now... after his demise.
A lot of us just grin ear-to-ear, hearin' this.
I did too eat to ear
Was moved to tears when I first saw this video (-_-)
Incredible talent
take a listen to the over the rainbow album
Tyson Ngubeni same. Because he's one of my favorite artist. 2018, and still rock Al everywhere
Hi, please search Al Jarreau - Live 1976 CD (this song and other songs from this European tour (not oficially CD but it's fantastic, fantastic, excellent sound!).
Me too! and I had 12 years old!
Al - a master of his body, his voice, his vocal chords, his emotions. So impressively smooth. 🤩
Al Jarreau was "beat boxin'" before it was cool. I wonder if Pentatonix were influenced by him. Thanks Mr. Jarreau for all the joy your displayed.
Rest in Peace Al J~ Bumpin your music all day!!
I’ve all ways loved this version of this song still jamming this in 2022 !! 😎💕
Over the years we saw Al about ten times in concert. Never a bad show. He is really missed. R.I.P Al.
RIP to the master of jazz vocals with R&B twist Al Jarreau
A truly natural musician and performer who kept playing until his last breath. R.I.P Al Jarreau.
This is what music is all about !! A tight band, fabulous vocals, dynamics, light and shade. Absolutely fabulous !
How can anyone not stop and be hypnotized by this one and only!
This is why I loved this man and his music!!
1976 live sound and it's one of the best I've ever heard a drum set mic'ed to this day.
was recorded over in Germany and your right hands down to the production on this one it is really not only just crystal clear but amazing..
Look up Al Schmidt. HE's a beast!! Still recording today....
AL JARREAU WAS CLEARLY UNDERRATED HE WAS A PURE GENIUS SHOUT OUT TO THE LATE GREAT AL JARREAU RISE IN POWER KING
Rest easy Al Jarreau he was best skatter to ever do it. He was so free in spirit. Love this video 🎤💛👑🎵🎵💛🎤
The Master...Rest In Peace Al Jarreau. I have been with you since age 20 and now at age 60, I return to recall places I enjoyed your music, as well as people I shared it (you) with.
I agree with you on that!
Rip my dear friend Al. This is the first song I ever heard you sing.
Too beautiful for words..... genius..... thank you.
I've been listening to him since high school,, now that I'm 56 I am still enjoy his talent...
Class of 1983 sunset high in Miami...
Fell in love with Al back in 76. What a brilliant artist he will always be.... Goodnight Mr. Jarreau, you will live indelibly in our hearts!!!!!!!!
And he's clapping 3 against the 5... what a beast!
cheers noticing that many don't 🍻
Heh... if you mean that place around 03:35, I must disappoint you. It's far away from 3 against 5. :) It's actually pretty easy "pattern". Just syncopated first beat and than 3rd and 5th beat in the rhythm. And because he claps the 5th last beat every time, he has a good rhythmical "feel" on the 1st, main beat... on the start of the bar (kind of he can hear 1st beat inside of his head).
they’re my favorite parts of the song
It's 5/4 time!
Oh my gosh!! He pulls you into his explorative journey with the song!! Just amazing!!
Unbelievable, again and again!
I've watched this video again and again and I never get bored!
What a charisma, what a voice!
Saw and heard him live in the 80's and can't forget that EXPERIENCE!
REST IN PEACE SIR! This is my favorite rendition of "TAKE 5" of all time!!!!
Al is the only singer/vocalist I've seen twice. I am so blessed to have been in the presence of greatness.
❤❤❤ always. You are one of the most talented, amazing, singer, artist in my opinion. I really miss and was so proud to have been in your life.
I grew up with him and his music, he was already ahead of his time, incredible and super great, we miss you a lot !!! 👍😊❤❤❤

So you say TOM CANNING knows how to play the keyboard. That's very generous of you!
Sounds like Michael Omartian
This guy was a one off, who I was lucky enough to have seen live. He could not sing a bum note if he tried. He was the greatest.
