- U.S. Army Forces Command hosted Aug. 29, 2024, a retirement ceremony at Fort Liberty, N.C., in honor of Army Lieutenant General Tony Aguto. General Christopher G. Cavoli, Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander, United States European Command officiated the Army ceremony. Lieutenant General Aguto was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service to the Government in duties of great responsibility over a 35-year career, culminating as the Commanding General of the Security Assistance Group-Ukraine.
His leadership and initiative, coupled with the relationships he built across the coalition, were critical to the breadth and responsiveness of international support to Ukraine. He personally ensured the highest quality of military advice, training, equipment, and sustainment to enable Ukrainian operations against Russian aggression. During his career, Lieutenant General Aguto demonstrated the highest levels of tactical, operational, and strategic acumen and positively influenced relationships and operations across multiple theaters.
He exemplified servant leadership throughout his career, with a passion for people and mission alike, in turbulent and changing environments. His devotion to all Service Members, families, and civilians, the United States Army, and the Nation is in keeping with the finest traditions of military service. His distinctive accomplishments bring great credit upon him, the United States Army, and the Department of Defense.
