Fun fact: When you have a view on Archangel's sniping point, if you stay in his line of sight, he'll always only put your shields down, and wait for them to fully regenerate before knocking them down again. With so much focus on the ending in 3, I think a lot of people lost perspective that the entire game is a conclusion and wraps up nearly every other storyline along the way. It was like a gymnast stumbling on the landing of an otherwise fantastic run to me.
1:50:33 - I was pretty darn thorough on my first play-through, but despite being overwhelmingly Paragon, I lacked the points to retain Miranda's loyalty after she and Jack argued; the end result being that two characters died in the final mission (one of whom, I think, was Tali, after sending her into the vents). I never uploaded that save into Mass Effect 3, so, I never saw what the effects of those losses were in Mass Effect 3. Jacoby's tale for that game should be very interesting! Oh, and for the record, the jokes about Martin Sheen and Steve Blum's past works resulted in some of the biggest laughs I've ever gotten on UA-cam. Thank you, YFS!
You missed something about the suicide mission. It’s not just that the crew mates have to be loyal, they have to make sense in the role you assigned them. For instance, you have to pick Miranda or Garrus to lead the other squad. Anyone else either isn’t experienced enough as a team lead or isn’t good at leadership, like Zaeed. This is hinted at in his stories. He was always the lone survivor on his missions. Your tech expert has to be Tali, Legion, or Katsumi, anyone else isn’t good enough. Same with the biopics, you have to use Jack or Samara, Miranda will get one of your crew mates killed because she’s not strong enough. You can send anyone you want as an escort as long as they are loyal. It’s recommended you send someone squishy. I like Mordin for this. Then, you take the 2 remaining most squishy characters with you to the last boss fight and leave the biggest bad asses you have at the door. If you have Garrus, Grunt, and Zaeed guarding, you’ll probably be fine.
glad you enjoyed ME2 so much, Son! The story, follower missions, enemies, and DLC were just so good. Easily the highlight of the franchise. Can't wait for you to do 3. I'm already predicting your retrospective will basically be "boy, the gameplay and some of these missions are great" before you move on to tear apart various aspects of the messy story and conclusion that's antithetical to the rest of the series' message. Gonna be a fun one to listen to for sure.
Great video! Just a few notes: In the suicide mission, the conditions for choosing your party members are not just "loyal member" but specific members have to be chosen. The vent: Must be loyal and must be a tech, thus only Kasumi, Tali, Legion, or Miranda can survive. Leading the crew back: ANY loyal crew member can do this, but the recommendation is Mordin because he has the HIGHEST chance of dying in the following fire fights. Leading the team: Must be a loyal TEAM LEADER and soldier, meaning: Only Garrus, Zaeed or Jacob can really do this and survive with all team members intact. Miranda is special in that she's flagged to ALWAYS survive because she's needed in the final cut scene.
On Haestorm, Grunt won't lose any shields, since he doesn't have any. Like all Krogans, shields are replaced by armour, which isn't damaged by the sun.
The loyalty mission is amazing. But I’d be surprised if someone got everyone to survive on their first play through. I completed every loyalty mission and besides having half the crew die because I decided to do missions after the crew was captured, I lost Tali in the vents because I chose the wrong squad captain on the other crew (I chose a loyal Samara). Miranda even congratulated me on my choice and it was still the wrong one. The pain of that alone pushed me into an entire second play through. When everyone survived I was so relieved.
1:51:27 I don’t necessarily agree with this. I don’t think if a player gets it first try they did it wrong or feel no consequence. The game through its characters make it clear who is suited for each role, and a player who is invested can get the right ending without a guide I feel. Just because the player avoids consequence doesn’t mean that consequence is invalid, in fact one could argue that success of “no one gets left behind” build upon the themes of hope and triumph the trilogy as a whole built. The tagline of the game itself is telling you to prove those who call it a suicide mission wrong, and that triumph of getting that decision right still has that intensity. Yes. The series is about loss and death, but it’s greater message is about unity and overcoming even the greatest of odds, with 2 despite its darker tone in comparison to the first still having this core message I feel.
The first playthrough I had of this game had only tali, garrus and miranda survive, because they were the people with me at the end/sent back with the engineers. I felt so awful, especially since I had really connected with Legion. Sad to see that he's not there for your playthrough for mass effect 3
So in the 3rd entry if this series … are you planning to pronounce characters names correctly? By playing the game. Or just read from a paper? Cause that’s definitely what you’re doing.
I was planning on just scribbling random hieroglyphs on a piece of paper and reading from that if its cool with you. That's what I usually do, I don't even know what Mass Effect is.
Great video as always!! I played mass effect for the first time summer before last while I was in first getting sober. The game helped distract me from my withdrawal symptoms and I’m sober still to this day. Mass Effect will always have a special place in my heart for helping me through such a tough time.
Finally got around to watching this to completion. Amazing stuff as always son! It's so amazing to see you popping out quality every week! You've come pretty far since your 13 Sentinels vid
ME2 is one of the best games to me and the ending is still maybe the most epic I've seen in games. I remember my first time playing the Suicide Mission years ago and Mordin also died for me 😢... I'm pretty new to your channel, but I gotta say that I loooove these videos 🧡! Keep up the amazing work ☺!
Unpopular opinion but ME2 is my least favorite in the series. It took out all my favorite aspects of 1. I liked driving around on planets, (Replaced with probing). I liked optimizing my build by getting alot of different equipment. I liked having cool down on guns without worrying about ammo. The first fight in the game with Jacob Shepherd runs out of ammo and is defenseless which is backwards in technology.
I somewhat enjoyed the driving at first in 1 but it dud lose its shine after time. Probing never had shine to begin with. It drfinately thrusted the gameplay more avertly into cover shooter mode, they were all the rage back then so not surprising its seen as a positive change. I do think 3 improved on that formula becoming a fusion of 1 and 2, bit more leaning towards a quicker version of 2.
I really appreciate hearing your perspective on ME2. It was introduced to me through an Xbox demo, and it's the 2nd Sci-Fi I played since Metroid Prime. I'd've not even been a teenager when playing it, but my lack of understanding didn't stop me from enjoying it. I have very fond memories of the franchise, and it's decisions likely impacted my perspectives today. Thank you.
No matter what scars you bear Whatever uniform you wear You can fight like a Krogan Run like a Leopard But you'll never be better than Commander Shepard
Thank you my son, I'm just about this start this having completed Mass Effect 1 recently. The story structure and narrative was amazing and Conrad was the best thing. I don't want spoilers, so dad will be back later.
I played the trilogy on 360. Weirdly enough, when I did the suicide mission, Jack wasn't loyal (didn't have enough paragon/renegade to keep her and Miranda loyal and ultimately chose Miranda), but somehow I made it out with no casualties.
ME2 was a huge disappointment. They took all the space opera elements I liked and chucked them out the window only to have you spend half the game doing what you did in the first (assembling the crew). I always refer to this game as ME Gaiden, because it feels like a side story, not a true sequel. The only good Mass Effect game is the first one, and I will forever stand by that statement.
My biggest drawback of Mass Effect 2 is that damn mission when the crew is abducted because Shepherd and the main characters have to leave the ship for some reason while the Reaper IFF is installed. Why did they have to leave the ship? For an otherwise pretty well written game it's an awful moment because it gives no reason for them to be gone other than to increase the drama. Coming off the back of that, I would have liked more main story missions like Horizon and the derelict Reaper because there didn't seem to be enough. Shepherd and their crew could have been given better motive for leaving the ship if they were doing another story mission like helping another settlement or something. Having a majority of the game's story missions be centered on building up a team and earning their loyalty can be both the games biggest strength and weakness having a sort of unfocused tone and the Collector missions almost feel like they're a nuisance when you're in the middle of trying to recruit a certain character or a loyalty mission you really wanted to do.
The idea that the game wants you to fail on first playthrough, but at the same time would reward you for building as much loyalty as possible is so facinating! Great video, thank you Son
Funny enough, I basically told Zaeed to buzz off on his loyalty mission and I didn't take him into the final battle, and he still lived. Very unfortunate.
There is just something about the second part… the reapers were still mostly unknown and the collectors just seemed so menacing. Especially with the harbinger stalking and mocking you throughout several levels. The script as well the mature tone of the game are unmatched. Ultimately, this was underscored by the suicide mission, which was great.
I just beat this game again earlier today and now will soon start on 3 again. I have no idea how many times I've beat the trilogy but it's a lot and I still love if it's my comfort game one of the few games I can replay and still look forward to playing again
The first time I played through this game as a paragon, I did not take the "we need to go after our crew" seriously. I wouldn't really say i was horrified by what happened - but I was upset. It felt like the game had betrayed what most games do - it hadn't followed "the rules" - games aren't supposed to have time limits if they don't tell you about them. It did stick with me - I have always arranged the "perfect" suicide mission since. So you're on point that it has a goal and can affect people on purpose.
I never played the games when they were released (except ME3 a bit when it was in PS+) and started the Legendary Collection just shortly before you put out these videos. I finished ME2 today and lost Legion in the final stand. I thought it was because they was the only not loyal, but now I want to know all about the Suicide Mission, because that sounds pretty awesome game design.
unless they changed on legendary edition the suicide mission is a little more nuanced. In the original ME2 (that I played so many times) the tubes person, need to be loyal and be a infiltatrion expecialist. Anyone but Tali, Legion or Kasumi dies. The Secondary team leader, must be someone with leadership experiente (Miranda, Garus or Zaeed) Then its time for biotic bubble, and if you don't want anyone dead, its Jack, Miranda or Samara (high tier biotics, you can use Thane or Jacob instead, and they die) When you rescue the crew, you just need to send one loyal squad member. If he's not loyal, he dies. if you send none, the crew dies. Ah the "hold the line value" Its a median number of all people who stay behind. Most combative get higher, with a little bonus if they loyal. And yeah, if you take infiltrators in your squad you make this number better if you sent someone like mordin with the crew, you make this number better OH CRAP, you sent grunt and used garrus and zaeed... oh son
@@YourFavoriteSon1 its an easy mistake the fact that the "hold the line" is a median not an absolute number (so more people won't do much good to avoid deaths) is the crucial thing
3 minutes in, "Today I want to talk about Mass Effect 2", great! lets go! "but wait I need to digress more", *sighs*, I am so grateful for the skip slider.
Man I absolutely loved ME2 when I first played and I’ve recently been playing through the series again. Somehow I got the perfect good ending on my first play through back in the day and I’m hoping I can get that again cause I vividly remember how tense the suicide mission was and just how much I was legitimately worried about getting even one of my crew members killed. Absolutely one of my favorite games of all time. Great video, my dude and can’t wait to see what you think of ME3
I'm seeing some weird graphical issues in some parts of the video; stuttering, frame rate hiccups, some weird blurring/ghosting, etc. Is this an issue with the Legendary Edition or is it related to your video capture?
To this day no game has ever left me totally immersed in its world then mass effect 2. I remember being towards the middle point of the game and my 360 got the red ring of death, goddamn young me was crushed haha still have yet find a game that really hit everything like this trilogy
If you probe the seventh planet in the Solar System (our solar system) you will have two voicelines by EDI: "Really, captain?", and the next one is, in an unamused voice "Probing Uranus". Probing it does noting, because, it doesn't have any resources on it.
Interesting you let Mordin die. Most fans would chuck a tantrum. I actually also recently did a near-failure suicide mission with Zaeed and Tali being the only survivors, Tali being my LI and Zaeed having an established history in being a sole survivor of suicide missions. You can actually still complete a lot of the side content if you game the mission correctly to fail and it's pretty in character if you're playing the Butcher.
Me and my dads first playthrough we only lost 2 people Legion and Garrus cause we thought they would live didn't realize loyalty got them killed. Never lost anyone again except on my purposefully killing Shepard playthrough
I hope the presentation on this is better than the last retrospective or this will be a short watch in spite of runtime "And then this happened, then this and this and this...."
Something I think is major i haven't heard you mention (yet, I'm still watching) is Mordin ALWAYS has a chance of dying in the suicide mission, loyal or not. The only way to guarantee his safety is to send him back to escort the Normandy crew, and not using him for any decision you make. As long as he's loyal, he wont fail the escort mission (probably due to his time in STG)
That's not entirely accurate. Whether or not anyone dies in the "hold the line" group, and how many, is a function of which people you put in it, and whether they are loyal. If their defense value is too low then the game starts killing them according to a prioritized list, and Mordin's is the first name on that list. Sending Mordin back simply means the next person on the list (Tali, IIRC) will die instead- unless removing the weak Mordin from the group boosts its score enough to keep everyone alive.
@@solicitr666 having mordin in the Hold the Line group is a bad idea because he brings the average point value down. It also depends on how you're playing it. If you're trying to perfect it, then Mordin would be in your squad along with Tali. I prefer to get the extra dialogue at the end, so I bring Miranda and I always take Garrus with me since he's usually my romance choice. Not leaving Garrus behind hurts my teams point value, so I send Mordin out. Theoretically the team should be fine with Mordin, but I have to send somebody to escort the crew so it might as well be one of the low value members. Besides, it had to be him. Someone else might've gotten it wrong.
@@KittysInu yes, but sending back tali, kasumi or jack has the same effect. I usually send back the vent tech on the grounds she’s done her bit (and Tali is useless against collectors)
@@solicitr666 right, as I said it should be one of the low value members. But since Mordin is the highest risk, I send him. Its the most commonly listed choice in guides as well 🤷♂️ You can even send Garrus if you compose your party of low valued members. Theres multiple ways you can do it and have Mordin survive, but the best way is to send him safely with the crew
Watching this wonderful vid, I posit this information... "YourFavoriteSon and Kas-umi K.I.S.S.I.N.G." "You looooove Kasumi! You want to marry her!!" Apologies to romance movies... Now, don't get antsy. I love her too, and I got that feeling from you. I would have loved her being more than DLC. She's such a dish with a real attitude and a lot of wonderful history and the Shakespearian tragedy story with her lost love. The story that develops over the mission really drew me to her and I loved her perky personality. Maybe she may get a revival in ME5. We can only hope.

Just a few notes:
In the suicide mission, the conditions for choosing your party members are not just "loyal member" but specific members have to be chosen.
The vent:
Must be loyal and must be a tech, thus only Kasumi, Tali, Legion, or Miranda can survive.
Leading the crew back:
ANY loyal crew member can do this, but the recommendation is Mordin because he has the HIGHEST chance of dying in the following fire fights.
Leading the team:
Must be a loyal TEAM LEADER and soldier, meaning:
Only Garrus, Zaeed or Jacob can really do this and survive with all team members intact.
Miranda is special in that she's flagged to ALWAYS survive because she's needed in the final cut scene.
On Haestorm, Grunt won't lose any shields, since he doesn't have any. Like all Krogans, shields are replaced by armour, which isn't damaged by the sun.
Damn you have alot of dads it much be crazy when y'all get together for your family reunions.
The stadium we have to rent is expensive
Great job man ! I hope that you are okay, I don't know how anyone could survive this upload schedule
I just love making videos haha
Another piece of good work sir. Keep it up
Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
This is right up there with SFDebris' series on Mass Effect 2. Well done.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it
So in the 3rd entry if this series … are you planning to pronounce characters names correctly? By playing the game. Or just read from a paper? Cause that’s definitely what you’re doing.
I was planning on just scribbling random hieroglyphs on a piece of paper and reading from that if its cool with you. That's what I usually do, I don't even know what Mass Effect is.
Right? The pronunciations are so weird considering you can hear how it’s meant to sound in-game.
Great video as always!! I played mass effect for the first time summer before last while I was in first getting sober. The game helped distract me from my withdrawal symptoms and I’m sober still to this day. Mass Effect will always have a special place in my heart for helping me through such a tough time.
Enjoyable video as always Son. We are proud dads
Thanks!
Easily my favorite of the mass effect franchise. I am looking forward to watching your retrospective as always, son.
Easily my favorite as well
Ngl you’re videos have made me try the legendary edition, I’ve been loving every video you put out
Finally got around to watching this to completion. Amazing stuff as always son! It's so amazing to see you popping out quality every week! You've come pretty far since your 13 Sentinels vid
Thanks Son,
You’ve dropped another banger on a game I’ve been in love with for over a decade!
Keep up the good work, Dad
Thanks Dad
The one pro tip i‘ll always remember: DEFINITELY flirt with kelly regularly. She‘ll take care of your fish when you do.

Just watched your first and second retrospective back to back!
Well done son! You make me proud to be a subscriber!
Thank you.
No matter what scars you bear
Whatever uniform you wear
You can fight like a Krogan
Run like a Leopard
But you'll never be better than Commander Shepard
Thank you my son, I'm just about this start this having completed Mass Effect 1 recently. The story structure and narrative was amazing and Conrad was the best thing. I don't want spoilers, so dad will be back later.
I played the trilogy on 360. Weirdly enough, when I did the suicide mission, Jack wasn't loyal (didn't have enough paragon/renegade to keep her and Miranda loyal and ultimately chose Miranda), but somehow I made it out with no casualties.
Dad: Are ya winning son?
Favorite Son: 2hr retrospective of the game
Great video son. Looking forward to ME3.
Almost there
ME2 was a huge disappointment.
Hey, Son.. fantastic work as ever! Wishing you a very merry Christmas - eat and drink far too much
Love ya, boy
Dad - London UK
I never noticed or even pieced this together before while playing but, at 8:11, that looks awfully reminiscent of The Scourge. Just me?🤔
There is just something about the second part… the reapers were still mostly unknown and the collectors just seemed so menacing. Especially with the harbinger stalking and mocking you throughout several levels. The script as well the mature tone of the game are unmatched. Ultimately, this was underscored by the suicide mission, which was great.
I agree
Well, I know how I'm closing off my weekend. Thanks for this, champ 💪
No problem 😎
Son, we need a full breakdown of renegade play through.
Right when I thought my day couldn't get any better, the son came out of the clouds.
Happy Sonday!
Man, that Renegade playthrough was like looking for landmines and jumping onto them head first
I had all my crew survived on 1st playthrough. I did things correctly without knowing
Hi son it's me your favourite Dad
Hi Dad
So... I'm guessing peace is out of question and cure will be shaky... suicide mission really threw a monkey wrench
I just beat this game again earlier today and now will soon start on 3 again. I have no idea how many times I've beat the trilogy but it's a lot and I still love if it's my comfort game one of the few games I can replay and still look forward to playing again
Suicide mission 101 - Jacob in the vents.
Son...you will go back and save everyone on the final mission
I take my failures in stride.
I think that's what I love about it so much though, it doesn't really have any rules, and the odds are stacked against you.
I never played the games when they were released (except ME3 a bit when it was in PS+) and started the Legendary Collection just shortly before you put out these videos. I finished ME2 today and lost Legion in the final stand. I thought it was because they was the only not loyal, but now I want to know all about the Suicide Mission, because that sounds pretty awesome game design.
unless they changed on legendary edition
the suicide mission is a little more nuanced.
In the original ME2 (that I played so many times)
the tubes person, need to be loyal and be a infiltatrion expecialist.
Anyone but Tali, Legion or Kasumi dies.
The Secondary team leader, must be someone with leadership experiente (Miranda, Garus or Zaeed)
Then its time for biotic bubble, and if you don't want anyone dead, its Jack, Miranda or Samara (high tier biotics, you can use Thane or Jacob instead, and they die)
When you rescue the crew, you just need to send one loyal squad member.
If he's not loyal, he dies.
if you send none, the crew dies.
Ah the "hold the line value"
Its a median number of all people who stay behind.
Most combative get higher, with a little bonus if they loyal.
And yeah, if you take infiltrators in your squad you make this number better
if you sent someone like mordin with the crew, you make this number better
OH CRAP, you sent grunt and used garrus and zaeed...
oh son
True, I forgot to mention the restrictions on who can be sent out for each. Thanks for pointing that out!
@@YourFavoriteSon1 its an easy mistake
the fact that the "hold the line" is a median not an absolute number (so more people won't do much good to avoid deaths) is the crucial thing
3 minutes in, "Today I want to talk about Mass Effect 2", great! lets go! "but wait I need to digress more", *sighs*, I am so grateful for the skip slider.
Was waiting for this one =)
Man I absolutely loved ME2 when I first played and I’ve recently been playing through the series again. Somehow I got the perfect good ending on my first play through back in the day and I’m hoping I can get that again cause I vividly remember how tense the suicide mission was and just how much I was legitimately worried about getting even one of my crew members killed. Absolutely one of my favorite games of all time.
Great video, my dude and can’t wait to see what you think of ME3
Glad you liked the video!
Ayo, how do you even play the 3. Without Legion or Mordin?
Can't wait to find out.
We're gonna find out together.
I'm seeing some weird graphical issues in some parts of the video; stuttering, frame rate hiccups, some weird blurring/ghosting, etc. Is this an issue with the Legendary Edition or is it related to your video capture?
50:21 Go ahead, I don't mine
To this day no game has ever left me totally immersed in its world then mass effect 2. I remember being towards the middle point of the game and my 360 got the red ring of death, goddamn young me was crushed haha still have yet find a game that really hit everything like this trilogy
If you probe the seventh planet in the Solar System (our solar system) you will have two voicelines by EDI: "Really, captain?", and the next one is, in an unamused voice "Probing Uranus". Probing it does noting, because, it doesn't have any resources on it.
If Jacob dies at the end, you won't have really lost anything
Interesting you let Mordin die. Most fans would chuck a tantrum.
I actually also recently did a near-failure suicide mission with Zaeed and Tali being the only survivors, Tali being my LI and Zaeed having an established history in being a sole survivor of suicide missions. You can actually still complete a lot of the side content if you game the mission correctly to fail and it's pretty in character if you're playing the Butcher.
Fem-shep is best shep and Tali is best girl. I'll die on these hills.
Martin Sheen also used to voice Nozdormu from World of Warcraft, until the new expansion, Dragonflight
I'm coming to you once again asking for a Kingdom Hearts retrospective son and I will keep asking until you do it
The Warhammer-reference caught me Off Guard.
Im so proud of you, Son!
Thanks Dad!
Wow, nice video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You said pursuit of doodie
Me and my dads first playthrough we only lost 2 people Legion and Garrus cause we thought they would live didn't realize loyalty got them killed. Never lost anyone again except on my purposefully killing Shepard playthrough
How do you mispronounce so many names and words from Mass Effect if you've played the game?
The way he pronounces Kasumi’s name is giving me an aneurysm.
@@mrrandomdude4291 that, keiji, batarians, salarians and im probably forgetting some more
lol he does it on purpose.
@@AllyMonsters why would he be purposefully annoying?
Great props on the vid. It’s hard to watch sometimes though with all the mispronunciations 😭😭
I'm Commander Shepard and this is my favorite video on the Citadel.
My missing one shot sniper 6/10.
I hope the presentation on this is better than the last retrospective or this will be a short watch in spite of runtime
"And then this happened, then this and this and this...."
Another fridge worthy video, good job Son.
“I survived tho so the mission was a success
So glad I didn't watch any of the marketing for ME2 when I first played it. Sheppard dying was quite a shock.
Its the most commonly listed choice in guides as well 🤷♂️
You can even send Garrus if you compose your party of low valued members. Theres multiple ways you can do it and have Mordin survive, but the best way is to send him safely with the crew
Watching this wonderful vid, I posit this information...
"YourFavoriteSon and Kas-umi
K.I.S.S.I.N.G."
"You looooove Kasumi!
Love the video, I do have a question though, why are you pronouncing certain names and species strangely?
Autism
My brother in christ, Tali is the best love interest.
Love ur video u should look at the metro games
Wait did the legendary edition not have the prothian squad member that's brutal he was so cool
That's no.3 that has that squad member
