Sno Parks like Little John, et al, have warming shelters with big woodstoves and firewood if you get in a clutch situation; you already have a Sno Park pass because you spent the night, so you can use those facilities if you need to. Overnight in a white out is still safer than being anywhere near the coast right now.
DK van content is the best. Every time I have a bad day at the office I imagine myself leaving it all behind to roam the country in a NASA van. I'm sure I'd last 3 days.
I wouldn’t even stop at all night! I run my Eberspacher D2 with the same Easystart Pro controller 24/7. I live in my van with a cat and my partner and we treat it like central heating, especially with that controller! I did the math once and on a 24 us gallon diesel tank it would run for between 30 days at constant max fuel consumption to 300 days at minimum. Effectively it can’t burn through more than a gallon in 24 hours no matter how hard it tries. And in practice as others have said, its consumption will rarely if ever be noticeable on the vehicle’s fuel gauge. Smoke em if you got em! Imagine coming back to a warm van after that Nordic adventure!! Dope video as usual dude.
FWIW, I've found that good sleep for me depends on mimicking my bed at home as much as possible. I've gotten 95% of the way there and feel like sleep 95% as well as I do at home in my own bed when I'm camping in a tent now. With an Exped Megamat Max mattress, fitted sheet, unzipped sleeping bag as a big duvet and a light down blanket on top, two pillows, and full jammies and earplugs, I never get cold and feel about the same as I do in my own bed. it's the only part of my camping kit where I'm not looking at your van and getting completely jealous of. to? towards.
The success of this gallant sojourn had to have all been thanks to your packing the Claymore! But your bravery to venture off into the enchanted forest without it strapped to your back was admirable. 🗡️🗡️
Because you made me laugh out loud when you petted the duffle bag, new subscriber here! 😂 Great entertainment! ...look forward to checking out previous videos and following along with your adventures! Safe travels. 🚐🚵
Not for me, man. I would’ve driven up to Mt Hood, booked a room at the Timberline Lodge, skied downhill all day on the slopes, and then retired to the lodge for a great meal and drinks, and watched the blizzard from the windows in the grand ballroom. That’s my kind of winter wonderland.
Stunning! Thank you as always for sharing this adventure! Also might I say, there is nothing like being surrounded by snow draped trees swallowing up all sound. Surrounding you in total silence. How meditative!
Great vid Dustin. I run my Eberspacher heater all night, I leave it on the continuous setting on a lower temperature , and it turns itself on and off when it goes below the temperature I set it at. It literally hardly uses any diesel at all, you could run it for a few days and the fuel gauge won’t move!! Snow looks magical ❤⛄️⛄️
i've run my Espar for 3 days straight in -10F to 20F degrees and didn't move the fuel needle at all. also used about 40% battery. they are very efficient and spec them on all client vans that we build
Unrelated to this video-video request. I’d love to see a video on how you care for your cycling clothing. And how you have it stored and organized. Lots of cool stuff on your channel! Found it a few months back.
I like this idea. Thank you for suggesting. Hopefully this video can help hold you over in the mean time. Some kit cleaning tips in there. ua-cam.com/video/ua2F4LvWGbo/v-deo.html
So much better than these pick up camper builds that are filling my feed. A space that is no bigger than neccessary will go a long way to conserving heat, and maybe you could add precut foil window shades to cut down the losses through the glass?
The more I see you spending nights out in the "NASA" van, the more I want one myself. Sure, a large Sprinter would be roomier and comfortable, but I have never lacked when sleeping in my 2 person backpack tent. A micro van would be almost hotel like compared to a tent. Cost difference would be better too, because the savings could be spent on more bike stuff 😂
We camp at mt baker in our van nearly every weekend in the winter. We have an espar and we keep it at 64 f all night, usually for two or three nights over a weekend plus morning and evening hang time. I never see any appreciable change on the gas gauge. Just set it to whatever temp you want and the mobius strip (infinite) for time and you’ll be good to go. Battery will run out far sooner than fuel.
If you want to be warm during the night, eat some chocolate before you go to sleep, your body works harder pumping blood around your body to process the chocolate digestion, hence you stay warmer. You could always substitute the chocolate for cheese as it has the same effect.
Anxiety is a healthy feeling up in the mountains of Oregon in the winter. Cool adventure, former Oregon guy, now in Alaska. I love skiing there, it is pretty damn magical.
Micro van is so cool! I drive a front wheel drive pro master and noticed I get way better traction in snow and wet with all terrain cooper tires, they make a huge difference. ✌️
i dont, nor havent, nor ever will...van camp. i mean, give me a nice ...really nice...hotel. but i love your sense of humor, your content and cinematics. so its very entertaining. i came to you for some MTB stuff originally...)
Love xx ski, breaking new trail gets you into cool places, once you get the kick and glide thing going its sweet. Next is skate skiing, guarantee you will get hooked once you get the hang of that! Enjoy
Your morning outfit had some serious cookie monster vibes. I agree that the duffel doesn't make a lot of practical sense to use a standard duffel, but I'm guessing it was designed for use while on a bike which creates some non-standard use case requirements. The mesh was an interesting idea, but I think it would make more sense on the top of the bag so that vapor can travel out of the bag.
Surprised that you didn't have battery powered underpants. Imagine the coziness of having your double espresso and avocado sandwich in the morning with those on full blast! Always room for improvement I guess. ;) The ploughing service and a crowded parking lot in the end was priceless! Great video!
I absolute love your videos dustin…but after this video i have to say try to get a ligthweigt fatbike with Tubeless tire set up…i know you have made a video earlier with a fattie ride. But try it again and see if you can get a 27.5 fat with fast rolling tires….you would absolutely love it and there must be some fat bike tracks/and people near you….keep puffin and riding peace …..
I'm told from reviewers, in colder places than where I live, that winter/snow tires matters more than awd/4wd on a car. But, I doubt you reguarlly driving to snow so maybe a snow capable all season tires?
I am running All Terrain TIres: Geolanders. They are great for sure. I've noticed with the van that steep slick means slide out. slow (torq) is not in this city rigs vocabulary.
Interesting. I am the opposite I sleep like a lamb in my van. When I have new van things I frequently do the first test with an overnighter in my driveway. Neighbor already thinks I’m a weirdo so why not.
No shower? Come on nodakker... represent! I lived there for, um, too long and had 2wd until I moved to the mountains. Going in the ditch in winter is nothing compared to going off the mountain. Nice work!
Really cool setup, I've recently been sleeping in my car in the winter too and struggling with my outdoor gas stove. I really like your idea of the electric induction plate. I was not able to find any information on your battery setup. Looking into your van induction, it seems you had a Yeti 500X. But at 300W this will certainly not power your 1500W induction stove. Can you give us a tip on how you pulled it off?
I go as low as the temp gets. I’m not running my engine to warm the car up and I don’t have a different heater. Personal low is -10 outside. Lots of down bags inside.
Fun adventure! I did a cross country ski camping trip a few years back we have a video of on our channel. This vid makes me want to do another one soon! For the gasoline heaters, I think Espar averages a gallon over 24 hrs of use so definitely very efficient
I thought about selling my house and taking off in a vam like this but i can't even handle strong winds and inclement weather in a house let alone a van but maybe just little trips and back home 😅
In our travel trailer we set the night temp to 50. I was curious with the battery pack you have, what percent of charge did you start/end with? I've heard the induction, while convenient and fast, is very power hungry. Like you mentioned, winter is not great in the PNW for solar replenishment.
Lol, I drive snow plow for DOT. I'm glad to see you didn't get plowed in by the snow plow. You definitely need water proof gators for your shoes and wax for the skis.
I DO NEED WAX...LOL! So funny you could tell. I actually have it on my list today to get. MUCH respect for DOT Plow Drivers! Thank you for doing what you do!
That was an awesome video. Do you carry chains with you? We have an 05 Sprinter RV that's only rear wheel drive and I think I should get some chains for it.
Love the van content! Once you start the van up, does the fuel gauge THEN kick in and update? Always worth a fuel can on the roof… or maybe just safely near the van!
Yeah dude, Those heaters are bitchin’. They barely sip on fuel and power. I have one in my self converted camper van and use it all the time at the base of ski resorts. It’s had hundreds of nights in single digit temps and run all night long without moving the gas needle. So rad.
@@EverythingsBeenDonea snow tire uses softer rubber that grips in the cold wet snotty stuff. All terrain tires are hard. They have deep treads, but won't grip the wet cold stuff. They're meant for dirt and rocks, totally different conditions.

3 Days is long time in the van!!!!
Love the micro-van vids! Thanks for doin what you do, DK!
Player! 🤜❤️🤛
They are awesome. Though would definitely welcome a mini-van macro vid.
I rock the thermos on winter bike rides as well, when a normal bottle would freeze. Having a hot drink is a huge morale booster and range extender

FYI - Studded snow tires go a long way towards making a 2wd vehicle mo beta in the white stuff! Fun vid! Thanks!!
Wawa mention. My east coaster ears perked up
Hey man, pass left! Haha, love it.
Bawhahahaha
My tip for a 2WD car in snow would be a cheap pair of AutoSocks. Bit of a faff to get on but I find I can drive in any conditions with them.
I have seen these on cars and not know what they were called! Thank you for the comment. I am getting a set for next winter.

a couple of things that improve a sleeping space for me are an eye mask or eye pillow and a fan. That airflow is so crucial for me.

For the van style you have, an external jerrycan for fuel could be great for you. Touch of class for the vehicle in addition to covering your back.
