There’s one thing I want to add for context since I didn’t mention it in the video. Overnight in the bivouac, I had a really bad gut feeling. So I was really debating if I should even attempt the climb, but as the morning came, I decided I’m at least gonna check out the conditions… and as you saw the snow was horrible, and that just confirmed my decision to turn around. Always listen to your gut!
I was doing a deep back country trip with more novice friends a few years back. Had a bad gut feeling and made the veteran decision to turn around immediately, despite my friends objecting. The weather forecast was clear but I "felt" a storm coming- we had to perform a river crossing to get back, so I didn't want to chance it. By the time we were 2/3rds the way back, we could look behind us and see the mountain we had been on. It was surrounded in dark sheets of rain, with many lightning strikes near the route we had taken. After we returned home we learned there had been a flash flood that took out several bridges and washed away some campers several miles downstream. Always listen to you gut indeed!
Great decision , when you are climbing solo, you are the only one who is dissapointed. better dissapointed than stuck or dead, thanks for a great video. ❄
Your videos are just great - no massive music over-dubs or 'high octane' rubbish - just a dude climbing and chatting to the camera....it's just brilliant, don't change a winning formula!
@@randylahey7343 When I was a child I believed Bigfoot might exist. But 57 years after the Patterson-Gimlin film shot in Bluff Creek California USA was released (in 1967) they are no further along. And I have run, hiked, camped, and climbed all over that part of Northern California, as well as Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Idaho. And I have never seen one, or seen/heard/smelled one. So I don't believe they exist. Did you see one? If I saw one I would possibly change my mind.
Another great adventure thanks. Stunning scenery. The last part of the access to the bivouac was surprisingly steep. I have no great expertise climbing in snow/ice conditions being mostly a fair weather rock climber and hiker myself and this video makes it clear that decisions you make are very critical. You are lucky to have grown up with this as your backyard.

@@miguelservetus9534 It does seem foolish to climb a high mountain without any gears in snow and rain as you can easily slip and fall. I do enjoy watching him though..
I so very much enjoy your videos - and enjoy listening to your thoughts. Wonderful to watch you - your abilities at hiking and climbinb are amazing. Yes, listen to your gut and STAY SAFE.
Wonderful - alone in the beautiful , peaceful mountains as usual! The snow livened things up, and the approach to the bivy looked sketchy. Again, a marvellous video, and l must comment on the efforts to get shots of you going ahead. To do it in the dark, and then having to go back for the camera shows your determination to produce great videos. On a different note, do you leave a note in your car describing your route in case of an emergency? Just a thought. So, thanks for another peek into your enchanted world of silent, empty mountains. Thank you.
Thank you brother 🙏 I really appreciate that you take time off your day to comment on every new video! I usually leave a note at home or text a family member where I’m going and which route I’m climbing :) But you’re right. It’s a good idea to also leave a note in the car!

Nicht schlecht gemacht, die Bilder z.T. großartig wie auch die Leistung, sich allein in solches Abenteuer zu begeben. Doch mein Gefühl war, dass der Protagonist wusste, was er sich zumutete.
@andrazegart In the USA the "rock piles" are known as "cairns" or "ducks". Ducks is more technically correct as cairns has as specific legal definition related to size for mining claims (they have to be much bigger). That said nearly everyone calls them cairns anyway. That type of snow (small soft beads) is what I call "graupel". People who don't spend time in the mountains probably won't be familiar with that word though. Awesome videos, I really enjoy them!
Solo climbing has a number of advantages. For one thing, all the decisions are your own. When to start, what route, when to push, when to take a break, when to press on or when to bail. Thousands of microdecisions determine how the ascent turns out. Go light and fast or bring extra gear was seen in this video. There is also a wonderful serenity and focus to being all alone that is just hard to describe. Acceptance of risk is part of climbing mountains. If one craves safety, it is "plain stupid" to climb mountains in the first place. I have some great climbing buddies I enjoy going with as well.
Wow I wish I lived close to the mountains as you do, must be such a good experience! If I may ask a genuine question, what happens if someone is arriving after you in the bivouac and it's locked? I guess you would wake up with the noise?
Anyone that high up on the mountain at night in a snow storm would not lock the bivy. They would be begging to come inside. As a mountaineer, you’d welcome them and serve them a hot cup of tea.
Thank you! Yeah I would definitely wake up if someone was outside. And if there was a way to keep the door closed without locking it, then I would keep it unlocked. But this door would open by the wind if I didn’t lock it with the ice axe.
@Murluv hahah I often think about that, because there is no other way out. And if someone randomly decided to lock you in, then you’re pretty much stuck in there 😅 and usually there is also almost no signal in there… 😬 But I don’t think such evil people visit the mountains 🤣 well I hope so!
