  • After Sam's broke yet more lugs off of our car I decided to record it this time. Doing it this way keeps you from having to buy a new wheel bearing assembly which is very pricy.

Wow, Honda made this process much too difficult. Some vehicles have an indentation that allows the studs to clear without issue

Yeah. I wish every good feature for each car came in a “super car”. Honda did this I’m sure to sell the press bearing job.

We just used your technique on an '05 Pilot. The car would have been totalled otherwise. The repair would have cost more than my son paid for the car.

Base on sloppy technician they will strip wheel stud, I used to work at Les Schwab and this shit happen so much because the lazy employees dont want to use their hand turning the lug nut 4-5 times before using the impact gun. They alway hiring young teenagers with no experience always fucking shit up, wheels falling off etc……I’m glad to be out of that shop now less stress.

Ive had to go through this a couple of times and mine has a notch where you rotate the thing until it matches the notch and then tap it out and in without doing all this work you had to do. I take it yours did not come with said notch. Are the places compensating you for anything like parts or credit for what they are putting you through in time, expense and aggravation? you're talking about more than half a dozen studs man. Sheesh. I would be pissed.

Unfortunately even the dealership impacts lugs in - tech dont waste time torquing them down because they work on so many vehicles. Make a request to properly have your lugs torqued in which on must Honda's is 80lb

  • @saucysuishi341

I would grind further back and maybe a little deeper as the spindle/knuckle is pretty thick. That way the stud only need a little shaving. I might have to do this. Because I just paid for new bearing and what to run 10mm spacer. Might do just rear. Do you know how much longer front studs are?

I've heard that Hondas use JIS drives rather than Philips drives, which explains why people tend to strip them out so often - because even though they look the same, they aren't. I'm about to try fixing a rear hub stud and special ordered some JIS drives from Amazon to try out. Thank you for explaining that this issue is often caused by impact drivers. I was advised to use one and found my lug stud striped out after that event. I will not repeat that technique. Thank you so much for posting!

I think it was a smart Idea to use a grinder against one part of it but it would’ve been even wiser to put the car in neutral and rotate the hub to get them out and in at that one spot 🤔 that’s how i do it and when i put the new wheel studs in I get my pb blaster and two 13mm wrenches and I pull them thru with 2-3 min cool times while also loosening them to keep the threads perfect and I forgot to mention I use a half inch pry bar with fitted socket or If it’s too difficult I just go and change the spindle out with different spindles from junk yard

  • @jsenichols

Hi Solid Ground Staging, I used your technique to replace the stud on my girlfriends Honda Fit and it worked like a charm. I did it at my own risk and I think it was worth it. The grinding was very minor and I doubt any parts were compromised. If the stud breaks the wheel has three other studs holding it in place. The only thing that I did differently was tightening the new stud back in place with a nut. There was no need for a hammer.
    Thanks for sharing your video.

yes unfortunately so. when you remove the hub , part of the bearing will come out with it 99 percent of the time. the way he did it Is actually very smart, still safe, and saves you unnecessary money

There is nothing wrong with this repair (other than hammering it back on and the cheap hammer he was using). You are not cutting a chunk of metal from the knuckle. If you are willing to spend tons of money for a wheel bearing replacement and hub removal, feel free to do so. I would only do this on my own vehicle though and not on customer's vehicles. As long as you know the possible hazard of shaving a chunk out of the stud's flange, then do it at your own risk. Should put a disclaimer on this video, too.
