I love it when tutorials include the sketching process, so thanks Kristy for putting that in and not speeding through it. I feel proud when I do the sketch myself, but i appreciate it when the outline can be downloaded so there's plan B. ;) As to the colors, your pinks make me drool. I don't have it in my palette 'cos want to learn how to mix it.
This is beautiful. I'm going to have a go...I only started with watercolour 6mths ago and art 3yrs ago..a complete novice!! Gosh watercolour is difficult but I love what it does. I'm only just daring to try drawing freehand
So happy to find your UA-cam videos. The 1st one That I watched, you showed the dagger brush. I actually bought one years ago and took it to an acrylic class and the teacher took it out of my hand. I was so sad. Then when I saw you using it I wish I could have jumped over the screen and given you a hug. I downloaded the sketch and hubby transferred it to water color paper for me. Here is my result.
I really like that you don't "preach" what colors to use. A suggestion of a shade or color is great. I love the challenge of mixing my own colors and shades. I find it interesting if a particular color is needed in various places and I don't match it exactly. I enjoy wet on wet and letting some colors bleed into each other. I do pen and ink and do minute detail. But when I wanted to learn watercolor I wanted to swish a brush across a paper and voila....art! The "sloppy" compliments my need for detail. As I age, this loose painting helps me continue my creativity without squinting. It took quite a while for me to realize that I had to let the detail go! Thanks for your quirkiness...I can relate!
Hi Kristy, You are truly unique!!! You are so talented and such a great teacher with your infectious enthusiasm. I was ready to give up watercolor because I was getting so frustrated, and then I found your channel, which has taught me so much. Thanks, girl😇
Kristy is who I come to for reassure with my art and for confidence. Sometimes all I have to do is listen, not necessarily watch. You do wonderful things and your creativity is spectacular!
I really love the way you give painting a simple and fun light. Your a great teacher and make things more simple and clear. I can get in a perfect mode which usually ruins my art. You help me avoid that. I thank you for your paper exploration. My watercolor has improved since that video. I was using crap paper which was almost as expensive. Have a great weekend and enjoy these beautiful spring days.💐 Angella in Burque
I am watching from Sri Lanka and the details of your teaching is so well articulated and very useful to blend and learn the water colour technique. Tku and blessings. I enjoyed the lesson
This is one of the prettiest painting of Magnolias I have seen so far.I love the way you mixed the colours they really complement each other nicely ,and having the green going into the flower is very natural as well as the green into the woodier part of the shrub.I will at some stage when I am feeling a bit better have a go at doing this I think.Probably won’t look like yours lol! But it’s a good excessive .Not done flowers for years ..Thank you for the clear instrctions..Love n Light 🥰
And information that you produce about art and the way you think about it is so inspiring. Your style draws the eye all over the painting. I really love this
beautiful. I love the title watercolor impressionist. I want to be able to capture a memory of where i am or what I am doing with out the pressure of perfection
I always have a backup painting. With oil you stand back. With watercolor you have to walk away. Sometimes I take the painting out if my art room, prop it against the wall and just sneak a look now and then to see if I've changed my mind. It seems like the values play hide and seek when you're not looking. Great video! ❤🎨
I really love how you paint in real time and you explain exactly all the techniques that you're using and why you're doing it that really helps the novice painters like me out
Your passion for watercolor is literally so infectious. I'd been waffling on whether or not I wanted to dive into watercolor for a couple weeks now--not anymore!
I'm liking this especially the "ish" bit. I am glad I came across you video. I find watercolour really hard because it always seem so controlled but you make it fun..
Thank you. I thought I was the only one who caught a little anxiety when sketching. I know what I want to do in my head, but to transfer that through to my hand is the problem. 😊
After watching the whole video, I can’t wipe the smile off my face. I love magnolias and you captured them with so much feeling. I’m going to try doing my first one like yours them do another one dropping in some fluorescents and see where that might take me. Thank you Kristy
This is crazy, I just painted magnolias earlier. I wish I would have seen this before that. Mine definitely did not have enough different colors. Live and learn! Your videos are so fun and helpful for me. Thanks!
I just love your approach and you're just so dang adorable! I'll try to sketch, not much of a drawer but you gotta do it to learn it. Ordered my painters pot and brush holder today. I'm real excited. I can't wait for the brushes. You have the sweetest face. You make me SMILE. Thanks 😊
Wowdy! An explosion of seriously helpful advice. My fave tip is the liner brush. I can see now how the liner can add subtle form enhancements. Thanks heaps!
Thanks so much for sharing your technique!! I’m generally an acrylic lover, but I do a lot of impressionist and abstract florals, and watercolor seemed so daunting to me. I’ve had so much fun learning with you!
Hello Kristy. Im very new to your youtube subscribers. I have so much I’l love to say but would take up too much space. I’ll see if I can condense it some. Two things about me, maybe 3. Im left handed, Im Canadian, Im afraid of watercoloring. Years ago I tried it . Took some classes with an artist in town. But his were so loose I couldn’t understand what to do. I could see his sketch but he didn’t follow the lines. Oh btw, your connection for your magnolia sketch doesn’t connect to it. And now I find your channel. And how you explain and do things makes sense to me. Its how you feel. You don’t have to do exactally at the teacher. And as you would say ‘don’t do as the teacher’ right? I am so impressed with you. The way you teach. It’s like someone just gave me an antidepressant and it finally worked. Lol. It all makes sense . It all finally fits . I can’t thank you enough. Oh yeah, I don’t know how to draw at all. And your direction on that is even great for me. I’m so impressed.
I’m gonna draw it myself, because it’s important to me to do my own drawing, but I’ll probably use a photo to help me figure out the composition. I do appreciate the opportunity to watch you draw first.
Beautiful. I have that issue, where I have to just walk away. I go back the next day or so and I find so many things to add and where to adjust. Great tip there for sure. I don't have all the pinks and lavenders, but I have variations so I will try this. I clicked on the link to download however it didn't work, but no worries. I am sure I have a photo to draw my inspiration from. Will need some patience on this one though, lots of details. Thank you for sharing all of your tips and tricks.
I think I might be weird. I LOVE MISTAKES! So spontaneous, unexpected and lovely. Not all of course. But most! They make me smile. I let go of all control and let things happen when doing any type of art.
Such a beautiful magnolia and I loved the use of color and light values. Also, the leaves and darker stem colors are beautiful. Thank you for this clear and concise watercolor instruction. You have a beautiful personality, full of kindness!
Hi, Love your channel! Regarding "jelly gouaches" like himi gouache and your comment that they are acrylic not gouache: Actually, they are definitely NOT acrylic... Ive been using them as well as my traditional gouache. They are definitely just a cheaper gouache, and instead of in a tube, they come in little "McDonalds dipping sauce"-like containers... They reactivate with water, unlike acrylic. I made a travel palette and filled my half-pans with the himi gouache. I also filled half-pans with my two colors of M. Graham & Co. tube-gouache. I let it all completely dry out and then reactivate them a little while before i use them with a spray or squirt bottle. I really love using both of them. But my M. Graham & Co. gouache tubes are of course better quality.
I don’t recal exactly what I said but I believe I remarked that himi gouache feels too much like acrylic for me. I’ve used them and rewet them successfully as you describe. But yes their texture, to me, feels like a very odd watered down acrylic :(
LOVE It!❤️ All the colors so Beautiful!🥰 So Stunning!💥 I think it’s the most Gorgeous magnolia on UA-cam!😍 You have the Best Attitude and the most infectious Joy!❤️
I absolutly adore your style and attitude!! Been watching you for a while, and this is my first comment. I am one of those "botanical" painters and have longed to have a loose flowing painting technique. Your painting is a very comfortable combo of the both. Your slightly cheeky chatter as you continue to show and teach. You are a comfortable and inspiring painter of my favorite subject, florals. This magnolia is my dream painting, I will attempt to paint one from your download to practice the actions of paints, but then, watchout, I am going in with my pencil and draw and sketch my heart out. Thank you Kristy
thanks for this inspirational video. I wached more than once to practice sketching along and finally also finishing my version of this.. although it's far away from your amazing art - I'm in love with the piece and I had so much fun creating it.
It is SO refreshing to come to your videos, Kristy - your joy is inspiring and your enthusiasm contagious. The timing is awesome, as a friend who loves white flowers has taken ill, and I want to do this exercise in soft blue-grey (not as succulent as yours, but that's her taste). I'm a bit confused, though as the link to the "Wet on Dry" video keeps taking me to a "Creative Wounds" episode....
I need to use my dagger brush more. This was a good tutorial for that. Our magnolias out front don't have any pink in them, look mostly like some grey in them .
I have always disliked having to spend time drawing out things. I love to paint them once they are drawn out, I just want to get in and paint. I also am one who cannot see a sketch or design in my head without help. A former art teacher helped me so much ~ she said most people use photographs or stencils or outlines to help them. I thought I was the only artist who could not, so I felt more confident knowing this. You are so encouraging in your teaching style, thank you. I like realistic paintings but can never do it, I also want to explore vibrant colors and am drawn to paintings that have multiple colors not usually seen in that item, which is also your style. For realism I take photographs and enjoy that medium.
This is beautiful! I am a total beginner and I do like to try and do the sketching myself. I really enjoy learning how to sketch from you! I have done the "How to sketch stress free flowers" and the "10 doodles anyone can do".. really loved both of them!! Do you have more doodling videos? Thank you for your fantastic chanel. I love it!! I bought your paintbrush set and want to order the Holbein paints soon.
been thinking about his very subject but already have a full table of ready to paint or w.i.p. art waiting for me in the studio. i like your approach to this, and the colors. i tend to be more detail oriented but i may try to do something more like this when i get to this one on paper. always trying something new ;)
Kristy I know you paint botanicals mostly and I do enjoy creating this kind of art myself, but I would love to see you paint some more landscapes. You make it look so simple, I just can't cope with what most teachers are showing, it's too complex for a begginer like me, and there's no joy in it, it's too intimidating. Your impressionistic approach is so refreshing, I was searching so long for something similar and didn't find anything. When I look at how you paint I realize that it's very much about brush strokes, precission and being calm while painting. I can't fully describe it, but there's just 100% clarity in how you paint and it's fantastic. Also... I'm very interested what would your take on watercolor pencils look like :-)
Thank you thank you Kristy for providing the sketch!! I plan on printing it a few times on regular copy paper in a light grey and doing a loose tracing over top to work on muscle memory and practice the feel of moving my whole arm to get those confident, fluid lines and organic shapes. Then I'll try having your sketch next to me and drawing on a blank page. Baby steps, right?! Sometimes it feels so hard (and frustrating) trying to look back and forth from a reference to the paper and trying to translate it when you're having to think about the shape, relative size, and direction all at once!
Hmmmmm - color confusion: for me, in this case, LAVENDAR is confusing. I have a few purples/violets. What you called lavender looked purple to me (and yes, we have a monitor in the mix) In my colors, the only one I would call Lavendar is a color Daniel Smith calls Whysteria and it isn't one I'd choose there. It's rather pastel and opaque (thank you Daniel Smith) and then there is one CALLED Lavendar that looks blue to me, periwinkle at most. It's also a bit on the pastel side (and again, THANK YOU DANIEL SMITH!) My color perception is quite good, but color names for paint (particularly watercolor) play a bit fast and loose. I can see why some watercolorists become pigment nerds and stick to numbers. So Kristy, here in Waterworld, can you explain purple vs lavender? I get pink vs red (no pastels involved) but the purples frustrate me.
The pigment I used is from Holbein and is a creamy and opaque lavender very similar to the Daniel Smith Wysteria. Hopefully this helps clear the confusion. :)
I love how you explaine your shading that is were I am week
I love it when tutorials include the sketching process, so thanks Kristy for putting that in and not speeding through it. I feel proud when I do the sketch myself, but i appreciate it when the outline can be downloaded so there's plan B. ;)
As to the colors, your pinks make me drool. I don't have it in my palette 'cos want to learn how to mix it.
I do love sketching! Glad it’s helpful!
Absolutely love this and will be giving it a try. Love your choice in colors and how you applied the shading!

I love Kristy’s positive attitude!!❤
I will try. Printed off your drawing. Love how everything is coming together. Thanks for your videos. I do have one of your books. 26:00 July 7, 2023

I love the no rinsing. Your advice has given me some of my favorite paintings I have done so far
That makes me so happy!
Thanks those are some of the one people like the best. I tell them about watching you and not rinsing the brush makes awesome surprises ❤️
Oh ho ! ❤️ just got your paint brush set just love it, my kind of magnolia by the way 💃
So much fun Kristy! Thank you. I'm so pleased with my painting
Wonderful!
Hi Kristy. I’m going to try sketching first. Then I’ll print yours out.
Sounds good!!

I thank you for the outline you gave. I like to trace it first and then paint it and then do it all myself.
You are so welcome!
Your passion for watercolor is literally so infectious. I'd been waffling on whether or not I wanted to dive into watercolor for a couple weeks now--not anymore!
Waffle no more!! Wahoo!!
I thought that water coloring was just about merging colors and pictures looking so watery. I now know a bit more.
Goo a sketch it myself, never quite know what it might turn into!
I'm liking this especially the "ish" bit. I am glad I came across you video. I find watercolour really hard because it always seem so controlled but you make it fun..
Glad it was helpful!
Beautiful sketch! I will try this. Watching the whole video first.
Thank you! I hope you do!
I like how you create such beautiful paintings with ease, you really inspire me your approach is beautifully crazy, I like it and learn much from you.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you. I thought I was the only one who caught a little anxiety when sketching. I know what I want to do in my head, but to transfer that through to my hand is the problem. 😊
You’re not alone
After watching the whole video, I can’t wipe the smile off my face. I love magnolias and you captured them with so much feeling. I’m going to try doing my first one like yours them do another one dropping in some fluorescents and see where that might take me. Thank you Kristy
Ooooh the fluorescents, yessss!
Barbara... I would love to see your version of dropping in some fluorescents!
I bet it will look awesome!😊
Yes, make them glow 🤩
This is crazy, I just painted magnolias earlier. I wish I would have seen this before that. Mine definitely did not have enough different colors. Live and learn! Your videos are so fun and helpful for me. Thanks!
Glad I could help!
Love your style of painting - the watercolor impressionist - love it! plus you always make me laugh
Thanks!
Looks complicated and I like that, but I'd have to take lots of breaks I think....to let things settle and get fresh eyes on it. Beautiful.
Breaks are good :)
Just found you and subscribed.... I love to paint without sketching first but I think I could learn a lot from you....love from England 🇬🇧
Awesome! Thank you!
I just love your approach and you're just so dang adorable! I'll try to sketch, not much of a drawer but you gotta do it to learn it. Ordered my painters pot and brush holder today. I'm real excited. I can't wait for the brushes. You have the sweetest face. You make me SMILE. Thanks 😊
Awww thanks!! So glad you’re diving in!!
Love your painting and your vibe!
Wowdy! An explosion of seriously helpful advice. My fave tip is the liner brush. I can see now how the liner can add subtle form enhancements. Thanks heaps!
You're very welcome!
This is my first time viewing your work. I appreciate your painting tips! Wow….
Glad you like them!
Very beautiful and great work 👏 👍🏿 👌 😀 🥰😋🇪🇪.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you for your words of encouragement. Loved your use of colour. Beautiful.
You’re very welcome!
Awesome painting and lesson. Thank you.

Love your sketch. Beautiful. Downloaded yours💕
Yay! Thank you!
Going to sketch myself as I sketch everyday. Love the loose style.
Awesome!
Hello Kristy. Im very new to your youtube subscribers. I have so much I’l love to say but would take up too much space. I’ll see if I can condense it some. Two things about me, maybe 3. I’m gonna draw it myself, because it’s important to me to do my own drawing, but I’ll probably use a photo to help me figure out the composition. I do appreciate the opportunity to watch you draw first.
Let me know how it goes!
Enjoy watching , might practice sketch or for now just copy
Nothing wrong with that!
Beautiful! I don't have the Shell Pink but I think my buff titanium and some opera rose can pinch hit!
Perfect combo!

I like drawing and painting so will do my own sketch then paint...Thank you for the guidance appreciated!

❤ me encantaron los consejos que das. Me dan ganas de hacer algo parecido 😊
Wonderful. I love your drawing.
Thank you so much 😀
Knowing how to draw free hand is amazing, but if that is not for you, my favorite tracing tool is Da Vince Eye: AR Art Projector.
Love that!!
Gorgeous
Another brilliant tutorial full of super useful advice and inspiration.
Glad you think so!
Beautiful sketch Kristy❤
Thank you! 🤗
So inspiring! Loving your brushes!
So glad!
Oh wow what a great idea?!
@@KristyRice THANK YOU! Yes, it does help.
