The middle 1930's-----Formal nightclubs with hat check and cigarette girls,neon,art deco furnishings,diamonds,martini's,pencil thin mustaches,goldddiggers with style,and no more prohibition.A great era.Wish I could go back to that time for just a little while.I do have a brown double breasted suit,fedora hat,and two-tone brown and white wingtips I wear from time to time.I am 73 and have been fascinated with this time for as long as I can remember.I think I came into this world a generation late.

I love seeing a dapper man! It brings joy to us all! Wonderful! I, too, feel like I was born generations off. The only thing that I like about this century is the fact that I can communicate with people from anywhere, I have more access to both what I want to learn, and to like-minded people who have also completely turned off from the current mindset and forms of “entertainment” that are being created now.
And now that I can see why so much effort has been made to misrepresent and bash the Bible and its true message, with all kinds of counterfeit Christianity, from Catholicism, to Mormonism, which have both paganized it, Rome grafting a modified version to their very pagan root stock, which thus contaminates all the fruit thereof, and all the other isms that strip it out like a car with no engine, might look nice to some people, the exterior can be all shiny and pretty, with the cozy seats and gadgets… but it isn’t actually gonna get you anywhere, and pushing with your own accord won’t get a relationship with God or a spot in heaven…..I like that I can study and learn from various preachers and teachers all over the world, of course always weighing what they have to teach against what is actually written. A lot of things are taught that do not align with what is written, but so much can be learned by people uploading saved sermons and lessons, even those taught 80 years ago. And that wasn’t possible in the time periods i otherwise wish I had lived. People still had a healthy respect for God and for each other.
1936 is my mom's birth year. I look at her at 87 and realize both how old these movies are and also how old these actors and actresses would be if the human lifespan would allow it. Times were truly hard back then compared to our spoiled pampered life styles of today. I got a feeling times are about to repeat this era. Are we as strong as this generation was then. Highly doubtful. ❤

Absolutely. No nude scenes/sex scenes/obscene language. **All that's coming out of Hollywood today is Politically-Correct 'woke' garbage. So-called 'actors' and 'actresses' these days are nothing but overpaid porn stars.
There's nothing like the old black and white mystery films. No flash or distraction- just good acting; and plot portrayal. I could watch these movies forever ,and never get bored. Thanks so much for sharing .

The opening of this movie was very relaxing. None of that crazy hype music that makes your nerves go crazy.. going to sit back with a cup of jo and enjoy this movie taking me back in time. 1 hour of me time.

Astounding to think that in just three years after this film, with voices echoing around the sets, the sprocket hole jumping, art deco graphics, Delsart style acting, and black and white photography, etc., The Wizard of Oz would be made! What a leap of technology in those particular years. It mirrors the speed of our tech leaps.
This is a public domain copy of a poverty row film, that’s all. There are films from this year and earlier that are more artistically impressive than The Wizard of Oz. You’re just comparing a film with very limited resources to one with an extensive budget and lengthy production schedule.

@@four4eyes The 1937 film "Charlie Chan in Monte Carlo" has an innkeeper saying that her husband smoked himself to death in his 40s, so where did that line come from? Were there people who didn't trust smoking then? Probably.
Puritan had one tenth the production budgets that MGM had. But they worked for their income- and theatre owners depended on them and other "Poverty Row" studios to provide a steady supply of "double feature" films for their patrons. At times, they could accomplish more than big studios with TEN TIMES their resources.
I grew up watching these old movies on T.V. in the 50's and 60's. I still love them and the music!

It would’ve been a better line to say he couldn’t track a wet elephants across a tennis court. A wet tennis court would actually disguise foot prints, especially if it were very wet. A dry tennis court and a wet elephant, that would be extremely easy to track, and therefore more of an insult.
Serious murders, but the whole movie is done in a humorous vein. Short, but packed. Nice ending too. You are challenged to spot the murderer before the end! The voices (speech) were harder for me to decipher for me. Pay attention. Thanks for making this gem available.

Those 1930's nightclubs must have been bloody expensive, A full orchestra , dancers and singer , as many employed as customers.
In those days nobody aside from the stars made real money. Studios often ran 'on the cheap'.

I agree. So much better than today's garbage that they fling at us. No nudity or cursing. Love the gowns and costumes and specialty acts.
Do you think these actresses and actors didn’t curse.do you think people back the. Were never naked and never cursed? Look up the Mitford sisters and their lifestyle back then. This is a movie, I’d recommend watching some documentaries or reading som e books about the reality of this time. There is also a video full of bloopers of old movies where actresses and actors swear like sailors.
@@OrangeTabbyCat It's still FICTION. It's still ENTERTAINMENT. Of course people cursed and fornicated back then. But unlike today, they didn't idealize adultery, perversion, drugs, or pornography. That's why people miss 'the good old days'.

And today it's all 'gender equality' and 'woke' and 'critical race theory' and Political Correctness. My ex-wife divorced me because I was too strong as a leader and the head-of-household, and then she married a parasitic wimp. Go figure.
That's before the trend was toward breaking up the nuclear family and having women having 'careers' rather than children. Later on children were a bother and men were to blame for everything. That's how we got to the mess we have today.

Got to love the films with the cast introduced one by one or two by two for minors players, it was a good idea that seems forgotten nowadays, helping with remembering the names and faces. It did seem to go with B movies as the players were desperate to be spotted by the bigger studios, which often explains the wild over acting involved in the film.

I too love the oldies, my favorite genre is the old sci-fi films of the pre space race time in history . It's great to be among b/w film buffs of any genre. Oh, gotta get back to my seat, see you after the show .

I really enjoy the movies at this scale, what I mean is if you watch it carefully the film itself. I don't mean the people the quality of the film. You can see that this was one of the first 5000 voice films this movie here could clearly be a silent movies. There is so much of personal identity to this particular film, the way they introduce the players that's another way of saying the actors and actresses. In the beginning they were more like plays, than movies.....
The production of this play/ movie is more on the line of a silent movie but it being a voice movie -- moving pictures that's why I enjoy this more than the late 1940 - 50s movies again the personal identity to each player in this production
Many other people in their comments said basically the same thing that I'm saying but more in a modern language so not as precise as how I'm saying it.

If they were built, people would come. More people are fed up with the general offerings, and people, businesses just aren’t offering enough alternatives.
We have a silent film “theater” in town, which is really just an old chicken coop that got expanded and expanded, until it became a reception hall. It’s very community-style, like you are watching it in a room with friends and family, and it has the old Wurlitzer organ, with a wonderful organist who has been begging to find other people to teach so they can carry on, as he is older. He always wears a tux when he plays. During the autumn, winter and spring season, when they’re open, and play their film selections for 3 days every two weeks, it is always packed. These days it is all the more so packed quickly, because of the growth in the area.
People want morals and class, not evil in every form that can be mustered.
If there were a big-band night clubs, dinner clubs, people would absolutely attend. Tue world is starved for that, especially America. They are desperate for good examples to be set, and for quality activities to be offered. And people miss old days, and are nostalgic for days that they weren’t even alive to experience the first time.
My grandpa played in a big band, and I miss him terribly. Until he was too sick to do so, he continued to date my grandma, and take her dancing to dance clubs. There are local dance clubs that teach ballroom dance. They are nothing like this show, but there are people out there who are doing it on a very small scale. But if it were offered on a larger scale, people would come. They are looking for the whole experience, not just some tiny little room with a few people. That’s where people go to get ready and learn to dance, to go to the dinner club.
It wasn't all that long ago. It is THE PEOPLE----hint-hint-hint----that make the times, not the calendar. The modern nightmare is the product of 'the wrong people'.

Nowadays mystery movies or shows are so dark, full of violence, lots of swearing, unnecessary sex. Horrible! We want to be entertained, not depressed! Even my favorite Poirot, in the latter episodes, they made so dark when production was taken over by Americans.
Movies today are filled with what the audience asks for. Life matures and grows, thus the complexity of what people desire to watch does. For someone who can enjoy both genre of movies I am confused why people don't understand this concept.😊 Have a lovely day

This one is a tad obvious, but it's way better than a cold write in. Back then they respected the audience a little more, it's no fun if you don't get a chance to solve it. The hard part is keeping it from enough of the audience to make you question your own solution. To me, that's the hallmark of a great mystery!
It's a brave thing to do to produce something like this, a kind of collaboration you rarely see in professional circumstances. They are hard to write, hard to direct, hard to act in, but they demonstrate craft as well as any art form. There's no place to hide in one of these, and if you're good, there's no need to.

There’s a Stranger in Town is another good black/white to watch.
These B movies are kind of beyond "good" or "bad". You simply can't judge them by today's films. This isn't the most talented cast you'll ever see. But it moves along at a good pace and everyone gives it their all. That makes for an enjoyable 70 minutes.
The film is an hour and eight minutes long...but 70 minutes must have been your favorite. 😏 jk

I like the spooky movies from back then better but a murder mystery now and then is good too. Especially British ones.
I love the old movies. I don't have to filter the inappropriate language that Hollywood became so fond of in the Las 30 years. I find the language very offensive. Especially the f--' word. I think Hollywood should be held responsible for the deterating of the use of proper language

The vast majority of these old matinee B-thrillers all seem to be about 1 hour and 8 or 9 minutes long.
Such an odd length but was likely to allow time for cartoons, newsreels and other features of going to a movie theater back then.
People went to the movies back then the way we watch TV. The evening was filled with an entire program of entertainment. Enough to fill about 3 hours.

I have to second that, so do I. He was gorgeous!!! And he could also sing. At least it looked like he was in the last movie I watched him in, it was called The Phantom Broadcast. A very good movie. I would recommend it to anybody that likes watching these types of movies.
I discovered Phantom Broadcast and Forbes about a year ago and have been since tracking down everything he's ever been in, and on the lookout for other people who are fans of his! I've read a few excerpts from books about Phantom Broadcast, and all the film historians seem to think there is an uncredited singer for the film, and that Forbes is just lip syncing. I used to assume they were correct, but now I'm not so sure... Do you also think it's Forbes's real voice?

Housing for homeless could be worked for not given freely .. Work farms with living quarters could be created with the money that is being wasted now .. this would be self sustaining and a transition from the street to eventually a home
