  • Yesterday, I introduced this simple drill to work on your upper register. Nothing very challenging to play, just softly up and down a 1 octave chromatic scale with a whole note at either end. Work this upwards in half steps as far as you can. I played every key in between while I was practicing, I just skipped ahead on the video.
The most IMPORTANT thing is to PLAY AS SOFTLY AS POSSIBLE without pinching your lips - allow the lips to respond to the air, rather than trying to control it. Mezzo piano or softer at all times. If you play this everyday, your range will improve.
Also, when did you last clean your trumpet out? I'm ashamed of how disgusting I'd let mine get. It's a big part of the reason I found this exercise easier today than yesterday!

Sing one note, then a higher one...
Among the many, mostly imperceptible, physical changes that happened in the various mechanisms of your body was an increase in the compression of the air. Sometimes, overthinking an expected result prevents us from doing a thing.
Sing a couple of notes again. This time pay attention to how you breathe, and the position of your body as you breathe and sing. Is it the same as when you play the trumpet? If not, trying breathing the same way before you play. You might well find it makes a big difference!

Good reminder to clean my trumpet. Must have an impact on resistance?

I'm surprised any air was able to move in mine at all!

How often do you recommend a trumpet clean out and mouthpiece clean out ?

Mouthpiece - daily. Leadpipe - at least weekly. Whole horn - monthly. I do it myself with pull throughs. Every year or two I get the horn ultrasonic cleaned, and generally serviced, at the shop.

How softly and gently are you able to play up that G?
