  • Since it's been a frequently requested topic, lately, here's a simple drill to work on your upper register. Nothing terribly difficult to play, just up and down a 1 octave chromatic scale with a 4 beat hold at either end. Work this upwards in half steps/semitones as far as you can. I played every key in between while I was practicing, I just skipped ahead on the video…
    The most IMPORTANT thing is to PLAY AS SOFTLY AS POSSIBLE without pinching your lips. Mezzo piano or softer at all times. If you play this everyday, your range will improve.

    Please tell me what you do to ensure that the aperture does not become smaller when moving to a quiet nuance or rising to the upper register. I really suffer from this

      There’s no way to avoid it, it’s as it should be. That’s why it’s important to play as softly as possible without pinching. That means keeping the center of the lips relaxed so they can respond to the air, and not try to control it.
