The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2021 US Open saw Russia's Daniil Medvedev and Great Britain's Emma Raducanu claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first major title, with 18-year-old Raducanu becoming the first-ever qualifier to achieve the feat. The 2022 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 30 - September 11.

Two great Champions.
Thank you Monica and Steffi.
You know, USTA, when you show these highlights, you should show the score every now and then. Most of the match, I had no idea what set we were in.
BINGO. They didn't even show the remainder of the first set tiebreak which was very key in the match. Just by watching the entire video, it became one of those "highlights" videos that is biased towards another player. You could tell when it's one of those biased/wishful thinking types of "highlights" videos when the one who lost the match has more of their points selected for the video. You have to call these out.
true
@@alexsdb9712 What? A player can win a match with barely any highlightable points (Wozniacki who is known for hitting barely any winners or unforced errors), and another can lose while hitting 50 winners (Ostapenko who can hit a lot of winners but 60+ unforced errors in a match.)
Highlights only show the most fun parts of the match--they don't show the points where the opponent hits their return into the net off a 65 MPH serve. Why show that? Who wants to see that in a highlights video?
Yeah I feel the same, In tennis u must know the score at all time's so u know what's what & where the game's at & stuff! It's actually quite frustrating watching old highlights of matches in this way!
I have watched this match million times. It never gets old. Amazing match from both ladies. Greatest moment in tennis history.
In women's* tennis history. The greatest moment overall is the Wimbledon 2008 final.
@@jameswalker6864 No, it wasvthe moment when Steffi completed the Golden Slam in 1988.
I agree with you Oyama. I have watched this many times because there is so much artistry and athleticism on display in this match from two great champions of the sport. For that reason this is also my favorite matchup in all of tennis: the power, grace and movement of Graf versus the fearlessness, incredible timing and sheer force of Seles. 🎾💚🎾💚🎾
Graf and Seles played only 15 matches, but that will rimain in the history, expecially this and the final Roland Garros '92. Champions with their won't be no more.
especially if stabby Gunther is available...
Memorable Titans of women's tennis
Seles was so graceful at the net after the defeat, especially considering the circumstances. Great champion, and person.
That was nice to see, considering the nasty comments from the Seles family after the stabbing towards Steffi!
I actually thought it was an act, and felt that she was quite phony. She was questioning every line calls, applaud unnecessarily a Graf's unremarkable winner only because she was leading 40-0 on serve and acted like a victim every time she lost a point through close call.
@@robertdrass9504Seles never came across as a very authentic person.
Drama Queen and a liar does not make someone gracious.
More than the match, I liked their warm hug at the end!!!
El partido mas esperado y promocionado de la historia del tenis femenino y uno de los mejores de la Era Abierta!
The intensity and shot making of this match is something to behold! love that backhand slice from Graf
I started to watching tennis about 4 years ago, and these matches are super interesting because of the history envolved, and to understand why players like Steffi or Monica, Sampras, Agassi had such a impact on the game. I am young and nowadays are Federer, Nadal or Djokovic, or Serena, but i look back and Steffi Graff have a special place in my heart, she is my favourite female tennis player, despite not following during its time, and just watch this highlights on UA-cam. The footwork, that backhand slice is a superb weapon from her, very quick fiscally and mentally, and the style of her, just made her, my favourite female tennis player! Not forgot Seles, very aggressively, great game of her, truly a champion too!
@Max E yeah a little… but the positional game from her compensates that
I am an older millennial and people assume I idolize Rafa or Roger but in reality I've watched tons of Steffi Graf matches and modeled part of my game after her. lol
Ok, Graf is a great champ. But I have even greater esteem for Monica Seles. She had everything to become the greatest female tennis player ever. Alas, fate decided otherwise.
@@jansnauwaert1785 I respect Seles but her style of play is very difficult to emulate. Thats a lifetime of practing risky, flat shots. on both wings. Unique in the open aera and not great to copy

Nobody like Monica and Steffi. Two absolutely Champions.
Interesting, I remember people making a big deal about Seles' grunting, but her grunts are quiet and brief compared to the caterwauling you hear from some players today.
True, and neither she nor Graf had to look to their coaches after missing shots. or celebrate every point. Yes, the game has changed, but I honestly think many of today's players (men and women) would play better if they didn't waste so much energy between points. I'll crawl back under my rock now.
People used to call it screaming and hindrance ( and still some haters do), they had no idea what was waiting for them in the future and honestly serves them right.
You are admitting that 'caterwauling' is distracting/annoying now but seemingly absolving Seles at the same time? Not sure about your logic. Navratilova and her peers called Seles out on this at Wimbledon one year. Graf did not. She just let her racquet do the talking and beat Seles in the Wimbledon final easily. Would that more players did the same
@@FrederickJohnSebastian Seles lost that Wimbledon final because all the criticism had gotten in her head. She didn't grunt in that match. After that, she swore never to listen to critics again.
@@gretchenlittle6817 100% right. Just get on with it. Also annoyed by the constant affirmation modern players need from their box. Do you really need a fist pump and cheers after every point? Looks so weak.

Seles was one of the finest athlets Yugoslavia had.
Loving Seles' sincere and warm gesture at the net.... U dont get to see that now....
Fake and phony.
Grafs shots and superior movement were more suited to this faster US open hard court than the rebound ace of the Australian.
Plus steffi’s slice just sat up right into seles’ sweet spot on slow rebound aced of melbourne.
Here in NY, steffi’s sliced just died and she knifed🔪 thru the ball and yanked her opponent around the court. Its an unbelievable sight to see her sliced went toe to toe with seles’ powerful two hander from both wings. Steffi was IT!!!

@Markus E definitely full of steroids, and sadly, serena will never get caught using the ol racism ploy.
Both this and the FO 1998 finals had the same match dynamics. Super tight first set which Seles let slip, followed by a 6-0 to level up and a third where she tired out. In both cases fitness in the third made a difference.
Yup. You described it perfectly. She was a shell of her former self especially fitness wise, Graf aside she was losing to girls she'd normally have beaten.
Sadly true
Not only fitness but her mental health, let's remember that her post stab years she suffer ansieaty that led her to eat more and more. It was just after the end of her career that she was able to take care of her mental health and get fitter than ever
Very true
What made the difference is they played as the players they were, the same then, the same today and always. Medical reasons are the only legit excuses: getting tired is life and should not be mentioned.
Graf playing in pain by 1995. Still playing stellar against the top players. What a great champ.

Winning against the opponent and the crowd. That's Graf, something that Hingis should have learned.
This crowd was very different from the one we know today, They applauded to Steffi's points too. Today they would be dead silent, cheering only to her faults. Monica had it way harder, after a break from the sport lasting two and a half years, yet she played on an incredible level.

Seles was the real deal
Seles was a great competitor definitely better than williams or ant player today.graf on the other hand was tennis perfection and at her very best no other female player in history comes close.
But mentally a little bit too weak.
Undoubtedly the GOAT of women’s tennis maybe overall! She retired at 30 and had more slams and higher percentage of wins. Her era was like that of mens current era with multiple Goats playing at the same time. Serena on the other hand didn’t have much competition or no competition (at least someone who constantly challenges you.. none) and still playing at 40 chasing to get the number but she lacks variety and grace! Had steffi played for 5 to 6 more years she would have been unreachable.. remember she’s the only one with golden calendar slam in 1988 winning all majors and Olympic gold which Novak tried this year but failed! No one has done that except her!! SHE IS THE REAL GOAT
Absolutely agree with you spot on with your comments. She was graceful in defeat and the best mover of all time. I didn’t want the SERB to win the Golden slam or slam this year he would have forever gloated that he was the best of all time. For me there will ALWAYS be two other players in that mix even if he surpasses 20 GS!!
Steffi Is Simply The Best! The GOAT!
To Bad Steffi Retired At The Age Of 30! She Would Of Won More Grand Slams! The Greatest Of All Time! The GOLDEN SLAM 1988! Only Player To Achieve This!
Serena had no competition??? When Serena first achieved her 'Serena Slam) in 2002-2003 when she held all 4 grandslam titles at the same time, the competition and class at the top of Women's tennis was INSANE! 1999 to 2007 (approx) is THE golden age of Women's tennis with the greatest generation of young players at or near their peak. Serena defeated: Hingis, Venus, Capriati, Davenport, Henin, Pierce, Clijsters, Sanchez-Vicario, Seles, Mauresmo and a crop of other talented younger players who maybe ultimately didn't fulfil their potential but at the time were very competitive and seemed poised for the top like Dokic, Dementieva, Lukic, Kournikova. The aforementioned players all multiple Slam winners and light years better than the opposition Steffi faced in her 1988 Golden Slam year where her real only competition and the only player she beat who was a multiple grandslam winner was Martina Navratilova then in her 30s and 4 years older than the age at which Steffi herself retired! Steffi's golden slam was a great achievement but the quality of her opponents were not in the same league as Serena's. Steffi beating Zvereva in the FO final 6-0 6-0 in 1988 was an example of how woeful the competition was, despite Steffi's excellence. To argue Serena faced no tough competition is willfully misrepresenting and twisting historical facts to suit your Steffi bias. Until the emergence of that golden generation in women's tennis, starting with the emergence of Davenport, Hingis and Venus in the mid-late 90s (a fallow period for Steffi when she failed to win any slams despite still being in her late 20s) aside from the top 2 or 3, competition/competiveness in women's tennis was atrocious. As commentators used to say back then, the women's tournament only began in the semi-finals given how often the top 2 or 3 players almost always made it there. I mean Chris Evert only failed 2 or 3 times IN HER CAREER to make a slam semi-final. That was also an indictment of how poor the competition was in the 70s and 80s as much as Evert's excellence.
Family aspects , which of course depend on those , his type , circumstances in which he finds himself as well as relationships , environment ect in , around , on and with which he grows up and or also grows into , e.g. can also, so to speak, rather unconfortable , unfavorable and unfavorable environment, relationships, situations ect, stimulate , provocate , give a push , initiate, motivate, to perform at the , .., this that
A classic match; both ladies were phenomenal. This type of tennis is sorely missed. Is it me or is Navratilova’s commentary quite biased against Graf? She rarely praised any of Graf’s shots . Maybe she was not over all the beatings Graf handed to her at Wimbledon ?
Navratilova is too salty against Graf coz it was Graf who effectively ended her reign as the top player in the world in 1987.
Evert and navratilova do not like steffi graf.
They are humans after all, steffi ended those 2 champions so they got very excited when seles came around to challenge steffi. Steffi surpassed their 18 slam total swiftly….. as deservedly so with her mastering all clay, grass and hard court slams.
@@fuckurbody neither of them benefited from the exceptional conditions the attack on Seles and her resulting absence from the tour created. The tour went through a very soft phase in the mid 90s with Seles out, Navratilova retiring, Sabatini losing her edge. Post stabbing until end of 1996 Graf lost only 15 matches and the only players beating her more than once were Sanchez-Vicario and Pierce. And 2 of the 15 losses were fed cup matches, where conditions are always special. And I guess both of them are salty because of the losses against her, especially evert who never won against Graf after completely dominating early stages of their rivalry.

Ive seen the full version, a few times. But I like the highlights because they showcase the essence of what we liked about both players...power and the shrewdness of how they went about winning points. What I loved about Steffi was her level of athleticism. Her and Martina were the most athletic players the women's game ever saw. And thats saying a lot, in light of how many great ATHLETES we've seen in the women's game over the years. And what I loved about Seles, was how she smbraced challenges, head on. She was ALWAYS up for the big match.
And it was never more evident than when she was warming up with Steffi. There was a pep in Monica's step...as if SHE KNEW she would win the match. You didnt see that kind of enthusiasm from other opponents of Steffi, during her era. Players REALLY did fear her. But Monica didnt. And she didnt fear Steffi, because Monica knew that against ANY PLAYER, ANYWHERE at ANYTIME, she could blow you off the court, with no apologies or sympathy. She was the most determined champion I ever saw, male or female.

It's true. Instead Monica was the istint killer more big than the history of the tennis.
When Steffi brought her A game Seles usually was toast.

Lovely highlights, Seles a shadow of herself yet pulling out a challenging match. Legend.
Seles a shadow of herself? That's some shadow! She had not dropped a set prior to this final. Her serve was much better here. Even during her prime she had the lowest winning percentage compared to any previous player who held the number 1 ranking going back to the 80s. Sometimes people want to romanticize I guess
@@FrederickJohnSebastian Yes I can say that, she wasn't the same fitness wise or mentally. Her prime was cut short she was just hardly 20 when that incident stopped her momentum. Also she lost to Arantxa at the French in similar fashion
@@paigehere5176 she was never the fittest player; even in her prime. She admitted as much. Her winning percentage for all women players is lower than other former number 1s and that is prime Seles we are discussing. Her comeback in 1995 had her setting a record for least amount of sets lost in the Canadian Open. Yes, losing to Sanchez Vicario; that just could never happen, right? Dont look now, but you just completely disrespected Sanchez. Something many Seles fans do in claiming every grand slam winner post stabbing/1993 is an asterisk at best because Seles would own them all. Incredibly disrespectful
@@FrederickJohnSebastian No one said she was the fittest but she was fitter than this even she said she felt like she was carrying a few extra kilos everytime she ran. It's not the loss to Vicario, it's the way she did it was very similar to this where the she'd step up her level in the second then tire out by the third. "Disrespectful" Yeah Arantxa would know a thing about that for sure and the last paragraph.... You're getting mad for no reason no one said anything of that that sort.
@@paigehere5176 not mad. Annoyed. Sanchez beat Graf and many others. You're being disingenuous: Seles would clearly beat Sanchez had she not been stabbed; there's no proof to that claim. Monica playing so much better this match... is a shame she lost because of that early break in the 3rd. Monica Seles proves just like Agassi, Chang, Sabatini and others that you can play high quality tennis with an oversize racket. I am so sick of people saying that only beginners and seniors should use oversize rackets. People should use whatever makes them comfortable. Seles, Chang, Agassi, Sabatini, Gene Mayer and many others won a lot of tournaments using oversize rackets. It's not the racket but the skill of the player.

Amazing game
Seles was still playing her best tennis in 1995. In fact, the way she was obliterating her other opponents in this tournament alone suggested that she was playing even better than she was before the stabbing. Yet, whenever she lost to Steffi (her record was 1-4 against Steffi post 93), her die hard fans were quick to suggest that she was only a shadow of her former self. We need to be fair. The 1995-1996 Steffi was a much better version of herself who swept everything in 1988 and then struggled with motivation and personal problem when Seles appeared to be dominating from 1990-1993. Even during those periods, Seles didn't have winning H2H against her.
People also forget, or don't know at all, what she went trough with her father;
In 1991 Seles didn't play Wimbledon - there was a rumour saying she was pregnant with Graf's father child and had an abortion!!

I reckon she had 4 or 5 more slams in her. Shame she retired as she turned 30. However, she felt that was the right thing for her. A family life beckoned.
Her retirement had more to do with constant injuries than anything else.
Like she said when announcing it, for the first time she wasn't excited before starting a tournament; she was tired of being in constant pain.
People have no idea how bad her body was, because she didn't talk about it.
She had played since 13 /14 and won 22 slams . I don't blame her for retiring at 30. She could've won a few more slams but wanted a life.

Anyone else get kind of sad watching Seles post her stabbing? Its just upsetting to think of what could have been. The stabbing clearly changed her as a person - she was never able to get back to her same level of dominance
She would’ve had more slams than Graf for sure.
I must admit, I am a big Steffi Graf fan, but true she wasn't the same again, although here I thought she was on her way back. Did you see her interview with Chris Evert? She shared with Chris that in 1995 in december, her father was diagnosed with cancer and I think that after this news the last bit of pre-stabbed Monica disappeared. I really felt for her, after having seen that interview.
@GoTeam Easily. Graf would have stayed at 10.

With so much talent on the court I feel stressed just watching. Even now. This was war.
Love how everything was against Steffi graf from the crowd to her old foe Martina with in my opinion her lousy commentary. Also a 6-0 second set going to Seles . Yet she has enough in her to dig deep and win the third. Mad props 👏 for my girl Steffi.
Navratilova was fired after CBS after just one year. She was told she was being fired for her "overly pro Seles commentary in general", her "overaly biased commentary against Graf in general" and "general lackluster performance delivery".

Could have all been so different, and you know it. Sad times for tennis. I never liked Graf, way back in the 80s, and certainly liked her less after the stabbing. She got lucky.
Same here about hate. I hated Seles since I first saw her in 1988. Disgusting woman.

1995 and 1996 were clearly Seles‘s best USO tournaments, better than 1991 and 1992.
But this time she didn’t meet old Navratilova and clay-court specialist Sanchez in the finals but Steffi in two of her best years ever (won 6 of 6 slams in 1991/92). That was too much of course.
Какие они были изящные эти девушки, граф Сабатини , Селеш, хингис, энин, по сравнению с сегодняшними атлетками, настоящий женский теннис показывали, не силу ударов, а именно техническое мастерство.
Unimaginable if Graf had a bit more trust in her Topspin Backhand!
She didn’t trust it for a reason.
NO the topspin bounced up high, right where Monica's sweet spot was. Graf knew what she was doing, you don't.

player who never could volley.
She struggled even against Steffi in 1991 & 1992 when Steffi played only her 11th-best and 9th-best seasons (match winning percentages).
It was a classic match equally played well by both players. But what is this highlights about? Monicas winners and Steffis errors? And USTA, you don’t want to show how Steffi won the first set too. Of all the other matches you uploaded in “classic matches” category, this match gets its “credit” finally. 🤔🤔🤔
I was thinking about the same. Monica is winning points and Steffi is losing points and however Steffi was the winner.
Steffi never really endeared herself to american tennis bosses, she just did her thing, won slams and refused to play politics… she hated going to tennis events and she barely made appearances, thats why the USTA never liked her and steffi gave 0 fvcks. Steffi let her racket do the talking, if we compare how US Open treated serena retirement as jesus himself leaving the sport…. US Open 99 didnt even mention steffi graf if I remember correctly, and steffi graf is 5 time champion in NY.
They did give steffi a nice send off at season ending championship that year tho (99)
The USTA still isn't over the fact that a non-American is GOAT.
잘봤습니다 감사합니다❤❤❤
I can't help but think that Monica would've been one of the all-time greats had she not been attacked by Steffi Graff's crazed fan. He achieved his goal and put an end to Monica's career.
Definitely. Seles was already on par or even ahead of Graf at all slams (3 AO each, 3-2 FO Seles, 2 USO each) and major events like YEC (3-2 Seles) in the spring of 1993, with the notable exception of Wimbledon (4-0 Graf). Graf was up with 9 slams and 2 YEC to 0 in the spring of 1990 and won only 2 slams while Seles won 8.
@@jujumusique1305 Steffi improved a lot again post-slump.
Seles only won so much because Steffi was far worse in 1991/92 than in 1988/89.

never understand the comments by some graf and some seles fans. there is a lot of hate against each player.
This stems from comments in 90% of Steffi videos: Seles is better than Graf…. Steffi would not have 22 if Seles was…. Steffi paid Gunther…Peter Graf was a cheat…Steffi profited from the stabbing…Steffi has no skill compared to Seles.. Steffi has no brain compared to Seles.. Steffi was a one dimensional player compared to Seles.. Steffi never did anything about the stabbing… Steffi Parche..etc etc etc. as a Steffi fan do you expect me to just shut up and allow the clowns to be let in?
From both sides. Although I get the impression that the Graf fans are worse. They just can take it than Seles was, in fact, better than Graf. Until fate decided otherwise.

Steffi is on record saying that the ball was at least 10 cm out. And she indicated that Seles apparently just wanted to fire up the home crowd.
There was a reason Gunther Parche stabbed Seles…
Он так любил Штеффи, понимал что Моника может прекратить господство его кумира
Yes, he was demented.
When he said in his trial that Steffi could become #1 again only with his help the judges rolled their eyes. That was clear proof for them that poor Parche was mentally ill. And they gave him only a suspended jail sentence.
nice quality but what is this editing? Missing end of tiebreak and so many crucial points in the third. Also no idea about the score. Could have been a great video.

Highlights in which the scoreboard isn't shown once! Booooo!
What a joke these highlights are. So biased toward Seles. We cannot even see Graf winning the first set!
Its USTA🤷🏼
Yes! I was so confused when they never showed the conclusion of the first set tiebreak. Unforgiveable.
Seles gained 20 kgs during her 2 1/2 years layoff. And it showed in the 3rd set when her fitness was way below that of Steffi's. She lacked variety and her one dimensional game of just hitting from the back was easy for Steffi to anticipate.
Steffi is the true champion and the greatest of all time.
Seles gained about 5 kg between early 1991 and spring 1993 (when she was stabbed).
And another 5 kg until her return in summer 1995.
She had eating disorder problems from 1990 on per her own account.

@@carrerau7138 Strange that Monica won 8 of the last 9 slams before the stabbing.
Take a look at Graf's record, just one slam less than Serena W but her spread of slams and tournament wins more generally give her a strong case for being the best ever. People seem to have short memories. Had Seles not had the disastrous incident I rather suspect she would have challenged Graf as well.
Steffi won 21 slams until age 27.
It it weren't for her reconstructive knee surgery in 1998 she surely would have played until her mid-30s and won at least as many slams during that time as Serena won in 2011-17.
The savage grunting pit bull of Monica Seles.
In today's spot on cam that does line calls, it would show that out call by Monica, actually right on the line, and Monica would've won this match and boosting her confidence to win more slams after her stabbing, instead it was only one slam and a couple of finals.
