SPOILERS 🚨 SPOILERS Okay, I'm running my second playthrough and I've realized something. In act 1 Astarion tells Tav that in order to become a vampire, "Just find a vampire that will drink your blood and turn you into a vampire spawn… In theory, the next step is to drink their blood. Once you've done that, you're free and a true vampire". I know this isn't dnd, but according to dnd lore, "The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and the vampire regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0. A humanoid slain in this way and then buried in the ground rises the following night as a vampire spawn under the vampire's control", (which is what Astarion describes happened to him), "Most of a vampire's victims become vampire spawn- ravenous creatures with a vampire's hunger for blood, but under the control of the vampire that created them. If a true vampire allows a spawn to draw blood from its own body, the spawn transforms into a true vampire no longer under its master's control. Few vampires are willing to relinquish their control in this manner". Here's my issue… Astarion gives you his blood. He tells Tav in act 3 that he gave them one drop of his blood and that, "You have supped of my blood". When you ask him if he's still going to drink your blood he says, "Of course I will, and you'll drink mine. I can't wait to taste your lips after you've tasted mine". So by all accounts Tav should be a vampire, not a spawn.
There's a theory that Astarion actually makes the player his vampire bride during that sequence which, unlike a spawn, cannot be compelled and is tied emotionally/telepathically to them. It makes sense considering he continuously refers to the player as his consort afterwards. If also playing the Dark Urge, Astarion will call Baahl's army an unsurpassable dowry along with calling Baahl himself papa because, if the bride theory is true, he married the player during the scene where he turns them per vampire rules. So Baahl is essentially Astarion's father-in-law in that scenario.
@@britt6184 I’m so glad that someone else knows about this rule. It was brought up during Curse of Strahd, I think. A vampire bride makes perfect sense for what Tav/Durge turns into. They don’t possess the unquenchable hunger of a Spawn, nor does Astarion forcibly compel them in any scenes past this point. This, paired with the fact that we drink even a small amount of his blood, means that we _have_ to be a vampire bride.
I know this is an old comment, but Astarion tells us that Cazador offered his blood to save Astarions life. I think you need a drop of vampire blood before you die in order to rise as a spawn. If you’re only bitten you’ll simply die. Once a spawn you have to then drink again from your vampire master to become a full vampire. This is why you are a spawn to Astarion and why there aren’t a million vampire spawns walking around just cause vampires need to eat.
Nah because I'm gonna be buying this game and playing it with some straight friends who I'm not out to yet and I will literally not be able to hold myself back there's no way
@@Blastopia nah it'd be way more fun to see their reactions. Also I can pass it off as a joke pretty easily because that's what their sense of humor is anyway. They get so committed to the bit I think they're gayer than me sometimes.
@@lunavixrn5651 we didn't find him for like 90% of act one, literally just walked past him without realizing. I talked with him as much as I could end of act one / beginning of act 2 but in classic dnd fashion we haven't been able to have a session for weeks. The only romance that happened was our half-orc barbarian with karlach and I think I accidentally romanced gale because I did not realize what he meant when he said he wanted to show me some magic.
@@woman_alt_accountI swear you so much as mention his cat and do some good deeds while he’s in your party and he assumes you love him. I didn’t even do the magic trick with him my second play through and in act 2 he got all hurt I was with Astarion and told me he believed I no longer loved him and made me choose between him or Astarion. Don’t get me wrong Gale’s romance can be good…but don’t go thinking you’re the pinnacle of my heart when I never even thought of you that way.
I get the thirst but you do realise this is like, the worst ending for his character right? By helping him do the ritual you make him become everything he hated.
I think people know it but it's a game and not reality so people are more likely to defend his ascension. And also thirst over this scene, even though, if you scratch beneath the surface, this scene is extremely disturbing. Like I know why it's hot to people and that's valid, but if you choose the option to do the insight check you actually find out that he thinks Tav is degrading themselves by going through with it. And that says a lot about their future relationship dynamics, the real spark they had is gone and replaced with what he had with Cazador. Even though there's still love, he can only be with Tav as long as it's based on control. Else he'd offer to make Tav a real vampire or accept them as they are but that's not an option. Like he says in the beginning; the biggest threat to a vampire is another vampire and he can't have that threat even from Tav. It's a game so it's not like anyone is going to question the morality in choices but it's odd when people claim he still loves and respects Tav the same way after he ascends when he's been saying contradicting things throughout the storyline and how being a vampire spawn is the literal worst and essentially the same as being a slave
@@thekitten9777 yeah I get that. Maybe I get too invested lol, but I’ve romanced him on like, every playthrough bar one. The first one, I wanted to help him and let him do the ritual but the moment I saw ascended Astarion I couldn’t take it and reloaded. The whole point of his arc is to help him overcome the trauma of 200 years of, well, Cazador. Tav is definitely degrading their selves by going through with it but so is Astarion. Because by becoming like Cazador, he’s no more free from Cazador than he was before the tadpole. Normal Astarion would be absolutely horrified at seeing his ‘ascended’ self.
@@MissChambersxo lol that's literally me. I checked out what ascension was like out of curiosity but I only made it to the first dialogue the morning after and then I noped out. He wasn't Astarion anymore for me, everything I loved about the character was gone in a heartbeat. I agree that spawn ending is the "good" ending for me and the only ending I played cause can't stand AA, I was just kinda explaining what makes some players attracted to that ending, I guess. They most likely know what they're going to get ,aka a pretty evil and corrupted Astarion and it's what they want. But canon for me is a soft non-ascended Astarion on the road towards healing, it makes more sense for his story in my opinion in regards to finally breaking free from his past life
@@thekitten9777 So, if you haven’t actually seen this play out: Astarion does give us a small portion of his blood. Even one drop should be enough to turn a Spawn into a true vampire. What Tav is, is known as a vampire bride. It’s a lesser known phenomenon that came about in the Curse of Strahd campaign in 5e. Which honestly makes perfect sense. The control that he has over us isn’t forced compulsion. It’s our emotions. A vampire bride is emotionally and mentally linked to their creator, which means Astarion is able to control how we feel about being his consort.
@@frostkitsunelive7661 of course I have played this scene. Yes, I know DnD lore. No, it is not confirmed that Tav is a vampire bride/groom also called a "vorlog" even though the process he describes sounds like the dark kiss aka the process whereby a vampire creates a vampire bride, but this means essentially nothing in the actual game if it isn't expanded on or relevant for the gameplay. You can imagine whatever you want as your own headcanon but if it's not clarified it isn't canon, a romanced post-AA Tav is referred to as spawn in BG3 and nothing else
I don't think he will actually turn you into a true vampire... Ascended Astarion only wants power, control over you, owning you. A true vampire isn't that. You will be forever his spawn, his toy, that he can use until he bores himself. In the end, he will become another Cazador.
I'm pretty sure you can, if you still have romance scenes with the others. I turned down wyll, lae'zel, and a few others early on cause I wanted to romance astsrion. But being a spawn doesn't limit you I think.
You can only become a vampire "spawn" (quotations bc Tav here isn't a true spawn technically) by romancing Astarion, and ascending him. Afaik there isn't any other base method in the game.
do you have to be in active romance with him because i started dating Karlach am i locked out of this or will it just randomly be a topic of conversating while long resting?
