I've never seen so many people complain about a cemetery before 😂 Like yeah Nola cemeteries are dirty...do you know how old New Orleans is? The family that would keep up those tombs are long dead themselves. I think the dirty and broken tombs give the sites character. I love the cemeteries down in Nola, Metairie etc and I try to visit every time I go

What you see coating the outside of the tombs is also a combo of Mold alongside the dirt, or dust, I should say. I've been to this particular cemetery but was untable to get inside. Lafayette Cem is a very famous place! The tombs need to be whitewashed on the outside and always better maintained. However, we don't realise just how much traffic and visitors this plot of land attracts! It's a very busy place! A respectful.place. An awesome place. You feel.it the very second you are around it. It almost feels as if a Gravitational force pulling you toward it. The carvings on some of these tombs are outstanding. Some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen reside in Cathedrals and Cemetaries!

Enjoyed your film. My family owns the Smith tomb with the most names on it. Since I started researching I have learned that there are 39 names on the tomb and 11 names that have not been added. This is strictly due to the cost. It was way too much for my parents to pay for when they priced it in 2010. It will continue to be used by our family.

Being that it's the only state below sea level makes it hard to make sure upkeep is done because it gets flooded a lot! My family and many other families do whatever they can to make the cemetery look nice!

Toured there. The smaller tombs are also for families who have had a member buried in a family tomb too recent. They are only allowed to place a body in their family crypt after (I believe its 5 years). I am just seeing this. Thank You . That is where I will be entombed with my aunts and uncles who all lived around the corner from there . 4th st. , 6th st. But SHAME on the City of New Orleans for not taking care of it !! Or Lafayette # 2!!! I spoke with the city after Hurricane Katrina and was told that they had gotten money 💵 to repair things that they still have “ NOT “ Done !! Right now as of March 2023 you can’t enter unless you’re a family member “ ONLY “ by appointment! They are doing something with the “ Trees 🌳 “ sounding the cemetery!!! What a JOKE!!!!!

The names and dates should be read, to show that the deceased is not forgotten.. It also helps those of us who are looking for our own families. Thank you for all you are doing.

Thank for the tour. As a New Englander, we have tons of old cemeteries, some are in the middle of nowhere...
The New Orleans crypts, stacked, are more familiar to Europe I guess.
Say, I was just wondering if anyone makes attempts to scrape and wash (paint ?) the tombs, or if it's even allowed?
Thank you for showing respect to the military dead, something that others* don't do.
    * Not often on UA-cam, but I do see disrespectful comments on Tic Toc.

    • @NOLADEEJ
      @NOLADEEJ  2 роки тому

Yeah I do think it was something adapted from Europe.. some do allow for cleanup and painting. Thank you!

If you're curious as to how they fit so many full size bodies in one crypt, there are videos on UA-cam explaining it. Spoiler: Expedited decomposition, wood-only caskets, compression of those previously entombed to make room for more.

It is now closed for restoration and cleaning. It has had a lot of vandalism and homeless encampments. It was so bad, it was necessary to close it. We are going in Sept and touring cemetery #3. I would love to clean some of them. They would be beautiful again.

I wonder why the city doesn’t clean and restore this graveyard since it is actually a tourist attraction. It looks like it is going to fall apart any minute. Sad. It could be so beautiful.

There’s a chemical called D2. People where I’m from are restoring an abandoned cemetery and spray it on old monuments and markers. They let the rain do the work. Almost all the Grave markets and monuments look brand new.

4 childhood friends, had a club, they decided to be buried/entombed near each other.....
Who were they? What were the dates?

I didn't think they actually used this cemetery in The Originals, but they built a replica on their set in Georgia since (I thought) none of their scenes had ever been shot in the real N.O. I have to do a little more research on that, esp since they were always in the cemetery on TO and tbh, it looked much nicer and cleaner than this one.

St. Louis Cemetery #1 was in "Easy Rider." It was shot there without permission. I know that didn't go over well with the Archdiocese!!!😏
