FULL NOLA PLAYLIST • New Orleans Virtual Tours
When it was dedicated in 1872, the trend in cemeteries in the Eastern United States was toward rural memorial parks with landscaped grounds, lakes, and pathways. This aesthetic, combined with New Orleans flair for ornamented, above-ground tombs, creates a cemetery that one can explore all day.

I fall into the cool camp! 😂
Love it!
why did you cut out during the part about the row of different tombs?
Why is this not the most popular channel on UA-cam! I just discovered it and am binging the series! Great job, Andrew! You are awesome!
We have the same question! :) thanks so much!
I love exploring cemeteries especially in the New Orleans area. Great tour, thanks!
Thanks for watching, Michelle. We plan to film again in other cemeteries in New Orleans. Hopefully, we will be able to bring you a video of Lafayette Cemetery 1 once it reopens. Be sure to subscribe to our channel if you haven't already done so.
Excellent tour packed with historical information. Well done!

When I was an undergrad at Tulane back in the '80s, I would often study for exams in one of the cemeteries. It was always peaceful and no disruptions.
Really! No one can think cemeteries can be used for studies also.
ua-cam.com/video/dCsVblN39T4/v-deo.htmlsi=mYAT_fEoeZHmt1Ca I think might like mine.
Share I figure I do more cause I love walking in cemeteries
I’ve been watching these videos over the last couple of days and love them! Andrew shares his city with so much obvious knowledge and affection, I wish I could be on a plane tomorrow. I did visit many years ago. Never made it out to Metairie Cemetery, but did see St Louis no. 1 and Lafayette. Gorgeous city, great tour!
Thanks, Stesha. We are glad you found value in our videos. Stay tuned because we have more in the works.
SAME
Your tours are so good because they respect the history of this city, esp was happy to see Voodoo, Hoodo ,aware many ways exist, shown as a beautiful thing.
Super cool. I for one am a lover of cemeteries, and I enjoy walking in them and learning about people who have died.
Glad that you enjoyed the video. We hope to film a few more cemetery videos in the future.
Hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ua-cam.com/play/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.html.
Me too. So peaceful.
My wife & I are Dead Heads. We've covered a bunch of Texas cemeteries. State cemetery is incredible here. Seen lots of famous people.....from Ann Richards to Stephen F Austin.... We've seen Bonnie & Clyde....Mickey Mantle.....Stevie Ray Vaughn.....Lee Harvey Oswald. I'm always amazed at what lengths a man will go to; to be immortalized. It's Awesome.
If I were ever to be able to visit New Orleans I would love this fellow as a guide :) Everything was easy to understand and informative as well as fun :)
We are glad you enjoyed the tours with Andrew. We also hope he can show you around New Orleans if and when you get here. You can browse our tour selection here freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-tours/.
I come from Glasgow and lived RIGHT next to a place called "The Necropolis". Wonderful place to just have a stroll amongst the merchants graves and to see the expensive monuments and headstones that are some impressive masonry. This seems right at home to me.
Love the Glasgow necropolis!!!!!
Did you ever think about getting a PhD. in New Orleans history? You are very knowledgeable down to the last detail. Thank you for the vid :) I know I'm almost a year late in viewing :D
Will pass on the compliment to Andrew!
I am a History Fanatic; GREAT show thank you!
SAMEEE
Who knew! Eco friendly graveyards... enjoying your tours. As soon as I'm vaccinated New Orleans is a destination spot.
Have a great time

I don’t know about you girls but I’m looking at what’s behind him 🤤

They were definitely wrong for taking that Madame out of her payed for TOMB and placing her somewhere else all because of public opinion about how she lived. PUT THAT DAMN LADY BACK IN THE COFFIN SHE PAID FOR!
Isn't that were they film the TV show the originals. I'm going to visit the French quarter in new Orleans by this February or March because I think Mardi gras is in February or March either one of those months so for the first time I'm gonna go there next year and that's in about 4 or 5 months from now. Omg I can't wait and I'm gonna be traveling from far because I'm in northern California so it's gonna be like another world for me once I get to new Orleans.

So good to see your face presenting a few more NOLA tours!
I love this cemetery. My friend's son is buried there.
Thank you for your videos, they are a big favorite with myself and my family. Always classy and soo much to learn and see in your Beautiful City and cemeteries.
You are so welcome!
If I ever make it to New Orleans, so would love any tour you guide.
The collective message here is “yes I can take it with me” lolololol
Great virtual tour!
"Hey isn’t it time we stopped wasting valuable land on cemeteries? Talk about an idea who’s time has passed. Let’s put all the dead people in boxes and keep them in one part of town. What kind of medieval superstitious nonsense is that? I say plow these people up and throw em away. Or melt them down. We need that phosphorus for farming. If we’re going to recycle, lets get serious.” - George Carlin
Love George Carlin. Miss him. To your comment, New Orleans cemeteries are actually very efficient. The numbers of their inhabitants increases without more land.
Wow you does look like HENRY CAVILL Slightly ❤
i live in virginia and it's pretty cool to see that some soldiers from va were buried in new orleans :) come check out hollywood cemetery if you're ever in the richmond area, lewis ginter's grave is my favorite!!
Ahh yeah Metairie cemetery. There's also Lake Lawn Park. It's also a part of this. Such a big place.
My great grandma Is in one over there my family is from there I live in Bay St Louis about 50 miles away
Why don’t they have any flowers and which cemetery was the Originals filmed at
Moriarti sounds way more Italian than Irish??
Agree, though the Irish name Moriarty is an Anglicised form of Ó Muircheartaigh (which certainly does not sound Italian).
The video you show of Louis Prima can be misleading. That's Sam Butera on the sax and Prima is on the left, only appears for a short time.
We know. It was a slip up.
I absolutely love this, and your MASSIVE wealth of knowledge and information on New Orleans. I can't wait to come back to visit in August. I have been in love with New Orleans since i was 15. Im 61 now, and retire next year. Guess WHERE IM RETIRING TO? ❤ NOLA!!!!

Hi. I’m moving there next month and I’ve enjoyed your walking tours. I’m sorry I couldn’t leave a bigger tip.

best cemetery i have yet seen
and so beautifully maintained
A credit to the municipality
Dunno but I'd prefer to be cremated
rather than placed in a slow cooker ?
But hey, I ain't a great chef either,
and here we are 🤣
FABULOUS TOUR... LOVE THIS!!! Great information... Thank you!!!
Great channel. I know there is limited time but I so wanted you to spend more time viewing some of the gorgeous tombs.
Andrew..... *getting the vapors* *swoon*.
I'm sure someone already mentioned this: That is the fabulous Sam Butera playing the sax. Would love to see it feature Louis Prima playing for the purposes of this video. Thank you for the tour.
You find much more french names in New Orleans cemetary thant in any french one ! Caron ... Beranger.... etc...
That may very well be the case.
Love your videos. I'm coming next week (3/13/23) along with my daughter, son-in-law and 2 year old grandson. Would love to know your suggestions. A cemetery tour is on our list.

I love your tours! I’m looking to move to Nola. Is the crime as bad as I hear it is throughout Nola these days since the pandemic?
Thanks for watching, Jeremy. The short answer to your question is yes, but with caveats. Here's an article to read www.nola.com/news/crime_police/article_ad846f9a-4b7c-11eb-8937-f3b1be3eebaa.html
I love your videos! What are the best Christmas themed activities and is live music open again this month?
@Free Tours by Foot - New Orleans Walking Tours Thank you so much!
That's Sam Butera is that video clip, not Prima. Great video - enjoy your walks and talks so much!
Thanks for pointing out! Glad that you enjoyed the video Barbara. If you haven't already done so, hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ua-cam.com/play/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.html.There is more where this came from.
I was 13 when "The Jungle Book" hit the screens, but I felt 'too old'(!) for Disney movies, so I had to wait for video to see that wonderful "Monkey Song" duo between Louie Prima and Phil Harris - but boy, was it worth the wait!
Classic song from two classic performers.
Rest in Peace, Louie and Phil.
(PS: also, as a Northerner, I appreciate that you are respectful of the Southern military from the Civil War. So much of today's "historians" just can't resist tossing in tons of PC...)
Not creepy! Very cool. Whereas it's fascinating and beautiful, it also strikes me as kind of decadent and ridiculous. The money spent on these monuments could better be used for humanitarian causes. Help the living

Been to NOLA several times.. loved it. Cemeteries are both interesting and creepy
My mother would often visit cemeteries while on vacation and I thought that was odd because she had no family resting there. Many years later I found out that in early times families would gather at the cemeteries for picnics because of their park like appearance. Yes I confess a cemetery tour or 2 sounds inviting
Thanks for sharing your mother memories with us Denise. Glad that you enjoyed the video. If you haven't already done so, hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ua-cam.com/play/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.html.There is more where this came from.

Great video but one question. I see what looks to be ground burials , is this cemetery high enough or protected from hrricane waters
Thanks Mary! Good eye - yes, there are both above-ground and in-ground burials in Metairie and most of the neighboring cemeteries. Those cemeteries are built on a natural ridge, so you’re looking at higher elevation here than in most of the city.
Appreciate you watching!
I didn't think I was going to like this but you proved me wrong. Not only is the place gorgeous but the bleached white stone is spectacular. You did a lovely job with your comments; informative, but overly verbose. Also, something moving about it. I will subscribe.
Glad that you enjoyed the video. If you haven't already done so, hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ua-cam.com/play/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.html.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ I will. I made a typo when I typed, "Informative but overly verbose...I MEANT to say, "But NOT overly VERBOSE." Sorry. But you seemed to understand I'd made a typo. I dread those kinds of things; misunderstanding...(shiver)...LOL.
I stayed in NEW ORLEANS FOR 3 months and it was great lots of history and the food was out of this world I loved visiting there👍

I love visiting cemeteries. I like looking at the different headstones. Mostly now most cemeteries in georgia only allow flat markers. On my mother father side has thier own cemetery, yet some chose to be buried in the church cemetery. Also her mom family has thier own cemetery. I do want a marker. I don't want nobody buried on top of me. That's what happened in a lot church cemetery's. The graves were not properly marked. So after years another church member could be buried there. I don't mind having a above ground vault. Hopefully I have time to think
.I wouldn't mind being buried on top of my husband. I've seen famlies do that. Great tour.👍💯💜👏🙌🙂👋. Najj.

There's nothing creepy at all about visiting cemeteries. There's a tremendous amount of history literally chiseled in stone in these places!

Thanks for this. It was just what I needed. I am being laid to rest in New Orleans. Unfortunately, I've been kept from home. I've been feeling very homesick where I am. This made me feel at peace, and it was super cool to get some history. They're so beautiful. An honorable death is my privilege and getting one of these memorials is its blessing. Thank you Louisiana. I love y'all and God bless.

Love the music! It gives me great memories of my parents and grandparents. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Our pleasure. We hope you enjoyed the video.
I use to go to Lafayette cemetery and explore as a preteen. I was fascinated with it and it's occupants. I later realized that I wanted to be a medical examiner, so that was my calling in life. I am a medical examiner and let the dead tell me why they died.
Forensic medical is very interesting. Respect to you.
I know your taking a walking tour but my husband and I can't walk. Is it worth the trip to drive thru.
Hi Jerrell. We think so. They have self-guided tour pamphelts at the entrance.
I meant to say "NOT overly verbose"---I changed it...sorry about that...I should type more slowly.
No worries. I assumed that is what you intended :)
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ II appreciate your response:)
I am headed to New Orleans next week and have a tour scheduled for the French quarter but I also wanted to visit one of the cemeteries and was wondering if you had a quick map reference to the ones you visited here?
Looking forward to showing you around the Quarter. We don't know of maps for the ones out here apart from Metairie Cemetery; they have a couple different maps of it available from the funeral home located to the right from the main gate.

I never knew there were stages in the burial process. When they need to open the stone to put a new body, how do they cope with the smell?? Also, how do Catholics bury in that cemetery? They are supposed to go into the ground. They can't be buried above the ground.
Some may be placed in a lower vault that's underground.
Thank you for the reply.
There's a channel called Lamont at large when he goes to the cemeteries and does really interesting things. I don't know him at all but he's just giving me a lot of hours of entertainment

When I was a kid in the 50s, 60s, my dad always said the four figures on the Moriarity tomb represented Faith, Hope, Charity, and Mrs Moriarity.

Cemetary Lover. Been to the ones in New Orleans and Savanah. A few in SC where I presently Reside. Oh forget the city Cemetary back home in San Antonio Tx
I loved this. How beautiful and the history is very interesting. I toured several cemeteries in Europe and this reminded me alot of them. Alot of love and thought was put into loved ones interments. I wish we had cathedrals like the ones in Europe. There may be a few in the US that are close, but not many..
We have one here in New Orleans.
Can you tell me anything about burials connected to oak trees?
The only thing I know is the story that Robi shares with us about enslaved people throwing acorns in the graves of dead owners - that’s in the Mississippi Bike Ride video

At 11:41 the guide mentions several names on a tomb and says who doesn't know know them ? Well I don't and I imagine several others that don't live in New Orleans don't either? You are not being a very good tour guide for those of us from out of town, fella.
I think she is opening the doors to eternal life. Such a shame in death how she was treated. We all die, we all deserve to rest eternally in peace where we choose. FOREVER ~

I know it’s not his real name, but I like to think of this guy as ‘Cemetery Perry’.
Just curious went on a tour a couple weeks ago and was told a different sorry of the second tomb you showed with the bath tub. Was told it was empty and owned by a big shot lawyer who's wife hated it so much that she wouldn't be buried in it .
Hey Stephanie! So cool that you got to check this stuff out in person. I haven't heard that particular story told around this tomb - a lot of times in New Orleans we have a popular legend version of story that's regularly told, so if I had to guess, I'd say it was probably something like that. (Also never met a NOLA-born person who would be above burial in this tomb - so in that story, the wife must have been from out of town!)
Here's the reference for this tomb from Find a Grave, which is one of the more reliable online resources: www.findagrave.com/memorial/47923947/eugene-c.-lacosst
And here's one of the better online profiles, albeit without a picture - it misses a couple points, but gets the basic story right: www.mausoleums.com/portfolio/lacosst-monument/
So appreciate you watching (and visiting)!
