    Hullo Sarah, it is a sweet deal watching you talk about your gouache painting methods. From how you load up your palette to packing pans, it is all information that everyone can use, thanks!

    Great video! I pack mine down too, but I use a small eraser I cut down to fit the inside of the pan. I use a plastic wrap as a barrier and push it in and it really compresses the paint well.

    I just recently made a dried gouache palette and I've never used dry gouache before so I am excited to try it! Just waiting on it to dry out a little bit more! Thanks for sharing your tips, I will probably make another one with your tips!

    Thank you for sharing. I am new to gouache and am trying different things. It's a big, brand new, fun experiment! Lol. 😅. I am happy to look at any and all ideas. This is different from the water color for sure. I have been watching you and other people use the gouache for about three years. You all made me curious. Thank you. ❤😊

    Sarah, I love your dried gouache videos! It's been really informative and fun to watch you perfect you set up. I now have a mixed palette of pans that I've filled as you've done, but also dried gouache pans from Stoneground Paint Co from Canada, which are also excellent (I hope you can try them one day). Cheers!

    Thank you, that’s really useful advice and explains why my gouache crumbled when I poured blobs in a plastic palette. I will try your trick with packing in into half pans so I can actually use the gouache I own. I never know how much to squeeze out when I work with fresh paint so I just don’t use it that often…

    Thank you Sarah - just wondering whether you've hacked the mixing wells of that Portable Painter classic. I love that you have 6 of the 'large' mixing wells, rather than 3 on one side plus a-bunch-of-annoyingly-small mixing wells on the other side.

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +1

      I took the “large” tray off of my broken palette, and attached it. It’s not perfect, when it opens there is a weird bend in the middle because of some supports, but it works!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +1

      But I’ve also seen some hacks where people use a Dremel tool to grind away the separators on the mixing tray

    Thank you! What about the medium you talked about to slow down the drying? If that for the liquid pallet you talked about in the last part of the video or did you stop using it?

    • @SarahBurnsStudio

      blending medium? No I don't add that to the dried gouache. I did try it once but it didn't make a difference.

    Even with a watercolors pallet I find New Gamboge, certain yellows and earth tones dry and crack more than others. I substitutes a different brand Indian Yellow for the Gamboge and problem gone. Sometimes you have to change loyalties to get what you want.

  • @ChantelleArts
    @ChantelleArts Місяць тому +10

    I never knew how much gouache can crack once it's dry so instead of pans I filled a regular open watercolour palette, now it's one big mess... whoops lesson learnt 😂

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +4

      Yea it's a bummer when that happens! I should have mentioned I will randomly get a color that does NOT behave as dried gouache!! Like a fluke tube...dries rock hard. But same color/brand will be fine if I buy again. It might have something to do with shelf life. But meh..gets so complicated to talk about the nitty gritty 😂

    Thanks so much for sharing this! I have this same exact palletE and I tried using my wash this past April, and it all dried up and crumbled. Now I know it’s because I didn’t have enough in there and I didn’t refill it once it shrunk. I know it’s not the quality of the paint because it was mostly Windsor Newton and Holbein. This is super helpful. I’m very motivated to refill my pallet now if they are completely dried out at this point, do I spray them before adding on the new paint?

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому +2

      I usually don't spray before I add more. But before you paint, it will need to soften, so I usually spray it then set up so it has time to soak in.

    Hello Sarah, What are your thoughts on adding a drop or two of vegetable glycerine to your gouache? I've heard it prevents mold and cracking. Great video, Thanks!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  Місяць тому

      It doesn’t prevent mold. You have to be REALLY careful adding more binder, because it can result in the gouache looking shiny after it dries, or never fully drying. It’s a very fine line, use sparingly

    I tried to make a dried gouache palette over the summer and it went horribly, and you've described well the reason for why...I used an Art Toolkit Folio Palette which are ultimately meant for watercolor (so the failure certainly was not the palette's fault since I was using it for something it wasn't intended for). The pans are quite shallow, some of my gouache dried alright in it but the majority crumbled to an extreme degree that made travelling with it useless since the little crumbles would all mix with one another. I suppose I ought to try again using a more suitable palette!

    What about mould Sarah? My guess is that because it is a dry palette that you don’t have to worry? I have the wet palette that you have and I would give it a spray of water when I wasn’t using it but now I see the start of mould. Clove or clove bud oil maybe?🤔

    Hi Sarah, I am binge watching all your gouache videos as I want to give it a second try in my art..... I'm about to buy a nice collection of tubes from Shinhan, Schmincke and Holbein when one question hit me: can I mix the brands?? Of course I can, but is it recommendable?? Do you do that or do you mix colours only from the same brand?

I tried to buy them but they don't ship outside of Canada, can we buy them from you?! Where do they distribute them in Europe? @@DwarfDragonwulfI don't have any experience myself, but as someone who has dealt with chronic pain and lots of surgeries and health issues since the age of ten the struggles are real.
      The good news is you do have several things going for you. You don't have to drag a chair or worry about the supplies being too heavy. 😂
      You can just hang the bag right on the handles. This allows you to bring more things without having the should I or should I not discussion for an hour. 😂
      I'm not sure what medium you use or what questions you have, but I'm happy to offer any help I can.
      If you are new the best thing I've found is to start in your backyard or favorite park to see how it goes and if your supplies work for you or not. Example like Sarah with the portable painter could rest on your knee and hold your sketchbook or you could do what I do and use the hard board that comes on the back of watercolor paper and make a DIY go sketch. I put duck tape all around it to protect it from getting wet and it allows my to clip my sketchbook or paper to it along with water cup and palette using magnetic clips you can get at the dollar store.
      Cheap and it works you can hold it or put it on your lap. Hope this helps.😊
