- My Picks For My Top 5 Guitarists Of All Time
In this video I want to talk about my picks for my top 5 guitarists of all time. This isn’t a video saying who are the best guitarists of all time. I don’t believe that’s a useful conversation and I believe it’s impossible to compare guitarists or any musicians in that way. What makes someone the best guitarist? Is it technical ability? Artistry? Influence? Speed? Originality? None of those things are possible to quantify. So this video is really about the guitarists who have had the most influence on me. Especially when I was first learning or when I was learning new skills and techniques.

Who are your top 5 guitarists?
(Can't play to save my life) My Top 5
1. Pete Townshend
2. James Burton
3. Chuck Berry
4. John Fogerty
5. Jesse Ed Davis/Roger Miller
1. Eddie Van Halen - technical proficiency married to musicality, his rhythm parts on the early VH albums are the real jewels, and more than that, the joy he exhibited when playing made me want to expand from acoustic to electric as a teenager.
2. Mark Knopfler - incredible touch and melodic playing, superb compositional skills.. my vote for best all-around rock guitar player of all time.
3. Geoff Farina - unsurpassed tone, great ear for using voice leading in rhythm parts, novel marriage of indie and jazz guitar.
4. Thurston Moore - great compositional skills and unique ability to create guitar soundscapes (often with a minimum of effects and gain) that are always making their own melodic contributions. Listening to The Diamond Sea for the first time was the single most affecting event for me as a guitar player - it instantly changed my perception of what could and should be done with a guitar. And yes, Lee deserves a mention here, too.
5. James Taylor - his hybrid Travis picked style and blues influences made his style iconic.. anyone that plays this style of Travis picking immediately sounds like him, and I've been learning from his songs from when I started 20+ years ago till today.
