I understood it that you need to simply drown yourself in toxic sludge, not die from stain, literally running out of oxygen in it "Toxic sludge must stop your breath". It would also make a bit more sense that it's not an "extreme" way to kill yourself compared to others, getting to ToTA and Gourdy are possible in Normal game, no need for NG+ so I doubt that 2nd part of quest would be most extreme tbh.

I asked the dev and it really seems that I have to actually die from the toxic sludge damage and not from anything else.

Even if I *could* just drown in it, I’m interested in knowing whether or not my plan will work. So I’d do this anyway. If it doesn’t work, then it’ll be a speedrun to NG+4.

I personally would've taken the toxic sludge thing literally, with it stopping your breath, I was thinking, "Oh I have to drown in it?"

btw you can actually die toxic in ng+2 you just need between 8% and 6.67% hp

Not sure if it would count, but you should be able to die to sludge if you polymorph into a hisi.
