How music therapy helps sick children cope

For 8-year-old Evie, who was born without eyes and has always feared doctors, even simple medical appointments are terrifying. But when she is able to sing and interact with music therapists at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Evie feels calmer and more in control of her environment.
For many patients like Evie, music therapy is the distraction they need to get through a scary situation. Singing a favorite song, learning to play an instrument, or writing a song can help patients relax and re-focus on something they enjoy, which can potentially decrease any anxiety they might feel about a treatment or procedure.
In early 2020, Mott plans to expand these music therapy services through the opening of Sophie’s Place, an interactive and inspiring space that will house instruments, a recording studio, broadcasting technology, and a stage for performances.

Someone was a genius for creating music therapy in the first place! Evie stole my heart when she sang in that viral video even when she was wrapped like a taco! She may not be able to see, but I’m glad she found a gift for music! Mr. and Mrs. Hurst sure were brave enough to adopt Evie and her sister Ellie, who was also born without eyes and is nonverbal, from China into their home! Evie is a star in the making if she keeps getting better at singing!

Evie looks delightful! I teach 8 year olds. We use academic songs in all curriculum areas (as well as SEL). I know the power it has to assist children to blossom as well as to learn!
