I can understand how we need the quarter inch seam on the top so we have a nice point, but no one ever shows how to keep the side points once something is sewn to them. Most people have nice points after sewing the BLOCK, but how do we sew them together on the sides and still have points!?
Thanks for showing us how to get better results. I have experienced all of the problems you addressed. The geese are one of my biggest problems, so I just keep trying. With this video at least I can see where to look to see where I'm going wrong. Haven't tried the oversize method, but it maybe the solution I need. You are a great teacher and look forward to more tutorials.
Thank you so much Veronica! The oversized method really saved me from a lot of problems. In my opinion, the bit of extra fabric is worth it so that I can trim away any mistakes! Thanks for watching!
I must be extremely talented. Lately, every block I make is off. I have so many things going on that I am having trouble concentrating. Thank you for all your wonderful tutorials ❤
After 2 days of searching you tube to figure out why my flying geese aren't coming out correctly - you nailed my issue! This is my first time making the 4 at a time geese and I was getting those little fabric triangles at the top of some of them but not all of them. Now I know why. So back to the cutting board so I can finish making 30 more flying geese for me quilt. thank you!
Brilliant tutorial, thank you so much . I've had difficulty squaring my flying geese blocks, now I know why! Fingers crossed that my Virginia Reel block will be easier this time round. Thanks again.
Thank you for this video! I've tried to troubleshoot my geese mistakes to no avail! I'm a veteran quilter and just "live" with wonky geese! I'm making a lot of geese today. I'm going to try 4 at a time 😆. Thank you again Ledine!
I have not done flying geese yet but am planning to make a baby blanket that uses them. Thanks for all of your tips. You are an expert teacher and are giving advice that my experienced quilting friends would give me.♥️
Hey Sugar Stitches! Thank you for the wonderful video, I have always done FG wrong and lived with it, but I don’t want to anymore. Long story short I just cut fabric for a quilt that is only FG by quilty love. In the pattern directions they suggest cutting the 4 small squares 1/8 inch larger. I did this but it did not say to cut the bigger square larger…. I am feeling unsure how to sew these now. My test blocks are coming up too short on the bottom/side opposite the point. I do have the wing clipper ruler and the June Tailor perfect HST ruler. All the fabric is cut, what would you advise in this situation? I could cut them to a smaller size and it would not affect this pattern, it’s a very simple one…
I love flying geese but struggle with getting them to end up even, especially on the 4 at a time method. I think I will try starting with bigger pieces, as you suggest; it is probably less fabric than the turn and flip (?) method. Thanks for the analysis and the tips. I would add that trimming accurately is also important. If you don’t use a block loc you will want to make sure the diagonal lines up on the 45° of your ruler.
The information you provide in your video is just what I was hoping to find. It seems like when I’m making practice flying geese they are near perfect. Unfortunately after investing in fabrics and spending time cutting, as I’m assembling my geese they are less than perfect. Using the 4 at a time method and the wing clipper tool, I seem to be having issues with the right side top of my sky. It’s too short by less than an eighth of an inch, and I’m feeling discouraged. Thank you for providing these helpful tips. I will keep trying. Question: I’ve been teaching myself to quilt for almost 3 years and still consider myself a beginner. Where would you suggest I start if I were to take your online courses?
Glad to have you here! Making them oversized really helps then you can trim away the problems!! I am currently revising my courses and adding a few new ones soon (including flying geese!) Make sure your signed up for the updates on my site and I’ll be sending out news when the courses open soon.
Saludos y bendecida noche 🙏😇😴
Same here. So many samples from scraps. I have 2 twin quilts in the works. Just adding geese borders to both of them. Once I finish these, Iam so over these birds. Sad, but I’ve done everything to exact mind boggling precision & have odd issues with the sides to have 1/4 seam allowances.
Crazy isn’t it!? I think it’s because the size ratio is off and the small squares are too large. If you increase the size of the larger square you need to do the same for the smaller squares. That’s what my talent was 🤣
Drop a comment and let me know what your biggest FG hurdle is! 👇👇
I always have "wonky" flying geese! Thank you for the tips.

I have this talent too! These geese were my introduction to quilting and it made me go back to sewing clothes immediately :D

I feel that way too! Best tip is to make them slightly oversized and trim away the problems!!
What a helpful video! I so appreciate how thoughtful you were walking through the mistakes - I've made em all!
Sometimes I get creative in making mistakes and can’t recreate them 🤣

Oh you are so welcome Karen! I hope the tips do help you when you make that baby quilt! Good luck!
Hi. usually it is a wonky issue here. I will focu more on all the things you pointed out. Thanks so much.
You are a great teacher!! Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Thank you! Your video had helped me SO much.
I'm so glad!

Exactly!! Typically even with the stitch and flip method I still make them oversized so I have room to trim away any mistakes!
This was very helpful
So glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
This was super helpful!
Thank you!
Thank you for this!! My tiny mistakes are making me crazy! LOL!

all of the above plus I hate making them
They can certainly be a pain! Making them oversized saves my day usually though!
Can’t get the 1/4 inch or scant 1/4 to perfection so my flying geese are too small, too big, or wonky. Thanks for the info. I will keep trying.
Yes, just be patient and take your time!! You’ll get it!
@@sugarstitchesquiltco Thank you for the encouragement. By the way do you spray starch your fabrics or go natural?
These flying geese look very familiar. Lol. I’m saving your video.
Not tried flying geese yet, but when I tried the card trick, after I trimmed it, there wasn’t enough seam allowance. Not tried anything fancy since x
Try again! Making them oversized a bit really helped me with my seam allowances!
@@sugarstitchesquiltco thank you for the tip Ledine. X
Mine are all dipping down in the center, so at the top there isn’t enough fabric in the middle, and at the bottom there is to much. Any tips for that?
I'm doing absolutely all of these mistakes. I find precision sewing so, so difficult.
Mine are often the right measurements but go up to the right/distorted.
Oh yes, I have that little tiny bit in the center & HOW did that happen? 😒
Crazy isn’t it!? I think it’s because the size ratio is off and the small squares are too large. If you increase the size of the larger square you need to do the same for the smaller squares. That’s what my talent was 🤣
Narrow seam allowance.
That can definitely be a challenge! Curious, how do you measure your seam allowance?
Yet to attempt?
Wonky🙃
I feel ya!!! Good luck!!
Very wonky
