- www.footankle.com/children-fe... Heel pain is the most common area of the foot to hurt in children and in this video pediatric foot specialist Dr. Larry Huppin will discuss the most common causes of heel pain in children and explain the most effective treatments, including self-treatment options.
The most common cause of heel pain in kids is Sever’s disease - also known as calcaneal apophysitis. Calcaneus is a name for the heel bone and the apophysis of a bone is the growth plate of that bone. So calcaneal apophysitis is simply an inflammation of the growth plate of the heel bone. It is very common in kids who play sports such as soccer, lacrosse and ultimate. We also see it a lot in baseball and basketball players. Finally, it is also common in kids who are overweight.
When treating Sever’s disease our first goal is to reduce tension and pressure on the heel bone. We do this with the use of quality arch supports or orthotics along with proper shoes. In some cases we need to let the foot rest for a couple weeks in a walking boot. We will also use anti-inflammatory measures including icing to treat Sever’s disease.

were time i jump and run it hurts and i go to gymnastics
Would this inflammation show up on an X-ray. My 6year old has symptoms of this but it has being ruled out (by a general doctor not a specialist) as X-ray shows nothing. Doctor has suggested plantar fasciitis but she has a high arch so have been told by other professionals that is highly unlikely. Any advice would be great. Thanks
I play footy and every time I play my right heel hurts to walk or run on. I’ve went to a doctor and he said I disrupted the growth plate in my heel. I’m 14 and he said it won’t heal back until I’m 18 and I can’t wait that long do you have any recommendations??
Wow, I did not know it is so common. Dr just diagnosed my son with this, I get worried when he feels the pain.

I’m 13 years old and I have heel pain in both feet & I do track! This is my first time doing it and it’s really annoying I can’t even go down the stairs or walk normal. It really hurts!

+Millie Eglen How old are you? Calcaneal Apophysitis (or "Sever's Disease") which I discuss in this video usually occurs in girls between the ages of 8 - 13 years. So if you are in that age group this would be the most common cause of heel pain. But there are a lot of other causes also so be sure to have a doctor check out your heel pain.

What does it mean it’s if I’m getting this pain at age 15 is that abnormal?
At 15 it's possible but not likely your pain is due to apophysitis. More likely it is due to another cause. See a podiatrist and get a diagnosis and treatment plan.
