    This is an AWESOME setup! Now that he's tooled up, he can ALSO build these for the new Micro Dual Band Ham Mobile Radios that are now hitting the market. I think this inventor may have very well struck Gold, here!
    WELL DONE!!!!!

    *_Outstanding Job !!!_*
    I would have them consider putting a 1/8" headphone jack, next to the speaker that interrupts the speaker for silent operation. Super easy add on for stealth operation.

    • @hardenedpower
      @hardenedpower 8 років тому +2

      Bruce, we nearly did, and I think we will be incorporating it in as a running change... in the meantime, headphones could be plugged directly into the Midland, and the cable routed out through the mic pocket so the unit could still be in the can. A bit awkward, perhaps, but it would work and only take a few seconds.

      Hardened Power Great to hear of your future flexibility; curious why you had hesitation on the $1 part?

    • @hardenedpower
      @hardenedpower 8 років тому +3

      Hesitation wasn't the input cost, it was primarily packaging (space) and wanting more time to test and tinker. We have some experience with remoting a 1/8" headphone jack thanks to our original DHAP... getting the right hardware (that reliably connects / disconnects the external speaker) can be fussy. I have been leaning towards a mini rocker switch to manually disconnect the external speaker, which I think will be more robust, but I need to work on lay out.

    Hank, thanks for the fabulous job. Not only on this video, but your consultation throughout design as well. The Operator would be less than it is if not for your ideas and assistance. Nice to team up and see such a refined machine at the first go (well, there were about 7 prototypes, but that is the nature of the beast).

      I come from the days of GMRS repeaters, those were great days for light semi-commercial use back in the eighties. Now a ham, I wonder if Hardened power might consider making this in a .50 can and having a larger cutout for adding larger Ham rigs. There are so many sizes out there but keeping a universal sized opening and then fitting a radio specific bezel to hold everything still. They have a CNC setup where they could digitize most any size radio opening and cut it into the universal bezel. I love the HDPE construction of the gear, light, durable, no moisture retention of the materials used. One would only have to remember to set their rig for minimum power since there are no vent openings but one could also remove it from the can and go to higher power, battery permitting.

    It took me a few days of reading test questions before I was able to pass the Technician class exam in the US with 100% You will have much better luck on the HAM bands, and when "SHTF" who cares if you're licensed.

    • @bruceforster3709
      @bruceforster3709 8 років тому +1

      Some of the long-time "Old-Timers" frown on any non licensed operators, even in an SHTF scenario. Personally, I would still try to help if I could. However, the Ham Community at large frowns on "Bootleggers", and very likely will NOT render any aid; in fact, they would probably try to Jam the non-licensed Operator or ignore them outright. Out here on the West Coast, there are a group of Operators, some licensed, some not, who had taken over 3860 on the 80 Meter Band. For reason unknown to me, they recently moved down to 3840. So, I just avoid the area from 3830 to 3860 entirely-there is NOTHING they have to say that is of any interest to me.
      In a SHTF, this problem will be exacerbated by non-hams who might know how to USE the radios, but have NO understanding of on-air procedure; Then end result sounding like 100 truckers on their CBs all talking at once. Experienced Hams are aware of this potential and are very concerned about it.

    • @JimN5QL
      @JimN5QL 5 років тому

      As you mentioned it is so easy to get a ham license these days. Why do Preppers spend so much energy making up things for this CB type radio thing when they can get their ham license for a lot less money and really have some communication!

    Very nice, would like to see some made for the new Chinese dual band ham rigs, they are about the same size as that radio. Radios like the LEIXEN LX VV-898 and the QYT KT-8900 would be awesome for this. Heck if they could figure out how to make the radio interface configurable to different radios that would be awesome because I really like the looks and features of this set up! Thanks again.

    Great design! Seems like the ammo can may provide a sufficient faraday cage as well assuming plastic isolated all the components from the can....would be worth testing!

    • @hardenedpower
      @hardenedpower 8 років тому +3

      Yes. The internal components ARE isolated from the can. All screws and fasteners are counter-sunk and no metal touches the interior of the can.

  • @LordTimelord
    @LordTimelord 8 років тому +2

    Agreed Iridium242 and Guerrillacomm!
    The Jetstream 2M/70CM Dual-Band Mobile's dimensions are 4 3/4" x 1 1/2" x 3 3/8". This is only slightly larger than the Midland GMRS Radio. I think that modifying the 3D Printing Program would be easy for Hardened Power Systems to accomplish.
    If you're reading this HPS, design a modular area where the radio goes where you could insert a different sleeve for different sized radios. This way someone could order the unit with the insert(s) they need for the particular micro radio they have. Or order more than one sleeve if they have multiple radios.
    You could also design a larger version in a .50 cal can to be used with a crossband repeating Amatuer Radio mobile. Include a larger battery reserve, solar charge controller with a low voltage load disconnect, and possible water resistant external connections for the Coax Cable and Solar Panel Input. A setup like this would work like Guerrillacomm's home brew simplex repeater ammo can. Including enough room inside the can for Argent Data Systems ADS-SR1 Simplex Repeater Box, along with a barrel plug power cord to keep it running, would be the icing on the cake!

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      LordTime - Bill does read all of these and I'm sure he will comment. All great ideas. I have an ADS-SR1 standing-by right now. I'm just waiting on a response from the FCC (send it the question a week ago) to see if simplex repeating is permitted with in the GMRS. The rules for GMRS only mention duplex repeating and not simplex repeating. I'm hoping to get an answer this week.

    • @hardenedpower
      @hardenedpower 8 років тому +1

      timelord... agreed on nearly all points. Most of what you described can be accomplished by stepping up to a 50 cal or fat 50 can. The current Operator, with the Midland, has virtually no available space for a larger radio. There were several times during design that we were tempted to give up and go with a fifty... it is amazing how little 'wasted' space is in the Operator G1.
      Minor point: The Chassis components in question are CNC machined from HDPE, not 3D printed. Although there are a handful of 3D components in the assembly, some of which you cannot see.

    • @LordTimelord
      @LordTimelord 8 років тому

      The Fat .50 Can would be the preferred size IMHO. My home brew version that I've been tinkering with needed the extra room of the larger sized can. Especially for the 30AH Battery I shoehorned into it! LOL

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому +2

      I also want to hit the next level with the Micro Mobile - Simplex repeating. I have the ADS-SR1 and cable is made, I'm on hold right now waiting for the FCC to respond to my question "is simplex repeating permitted in the GMRS and if so, what channels should be used." I was hoping for an answer last week but the help desk folks said it was still pending with the engineers. I'm hoping to get a response this week.

    I understand your point about a ham license! but many people still don't know there is no CW or code requirement anymore. and the licensing will give anyone longer distance communications more the ability to get much more radio use and experience in communications. and the entry-level licence technicians class gives more then enough useful frequencies.

    Got mine today. Put my MXT115 in my box. FWIW, I also have a MXT400 but do not plan on putting it in a mount box. Too expensive anyway.
    A couple of things I would like to see changed.
    1. A better back side padding (or another strip). There is ONE small strip of foam rubber that doesn't even go from side to side. I plan on fixing this myself.
    2. Would also be nice if a ground connection could be affixed to the box allowing grounding of the box so when you mag mount an antenna, you get a nice ground plane.
    3. The power supply that Harden power sends is great. But you can't store it, the antenna and mic in the space provided. I tried a few configs that wouldn't require me to pull the radio out every time. No joy.
    It's a VERY decent setup though. The battery came charged, connections fit fine. The antenna cable is pretty stiff so bending it to not stick out and get in the way of putting the insides back into the can. I affixed the mic holder that came with the MXT115 to the can with it's adhesive. Seems to be strong enough to take a few bumps and stay put but I also have some of the industrial Velcro that I may end up using so I can stow the mic holder on the outside of the can when in use. The cost of this can is reasonable IMO and in no way in my "things I'd like to see" tries to suggest otherwise.
    Your video helped me decide to go ahead and buy this box. Thanks
    p.s., you sound like a "radioman". Good procedure. ;-)

      Something I did share with them is charging. I finally ran my battery down the other day. So, figured I'd give it a wall charge. Radio off. on/off front panel switch. Off.. MISTAKE! Unless I missed something, I had to turn the switch to ON in order to charge. I assume you have to do this with your solar panel also. The little green lights blink regardless what position the front power switch is set to, but with it off, it won't charge the battery? Is charging instructions listed somewhere that tells me this is NOT the right way?

      Hams, this is what a true Go Box should be like.
      Sometimes hams make Go Boxes that still have to be assembled in the field and then taken apart again after using it instead of having it all mounted, hooked up, self contained and all ready to go.
      This is the true essence of what a real Go Box really is. Great work Hardened Power and thanks to Commsprepper for the excellent video demonstration about this!.

      So far, no issues at all. I would say that keeping the machine out of direct sunlight, if possible, would be prudent. Consider that the Midland radio is meant to be installed inside a vehicle (among other installations). A parked car in the sunlight has no benefit of moving air, and can reach 160 or more degrees inside on a hot summer day.

    • @hardenedpower
      @hardenedpower 8 років тому +2

      Bill, it is hard to say for sure... The Operator is electrically isolated from the can, and a standard ammo can has lapped and welded seams. It should be better than most approaches for EMP mitigation, but I do not make any promises. Too many variables. I hope you understand. ;-)

    • @Subgunman
      @Subgunman 8 років тому

      + Bill Kost. The gasket used in the ammo can is the weak point for EMP protection. They appear to made of neoprene and mst likely are not electrically conductive. In order to bring it up to a level of better protection one would need to replace the gasket with one that is also electrically conductive and bond it to the lid electrically and physically for moisture resistance. The next issue is the lip of the actual can. It would need to be stripped and plated with a corrosion resistant, electrically conductive coating.

      Tony, I think we will be incorporating it in as a running change... in the meantime, headphones could be plugged directly into the Midland, and the cable routed out through the mic pocket so the unit could still be in the can. A bit awkward, perhaps, but it would work and only take a few seconds. (repeat of my response, above). ;-)

      Hank, I am really looking forward to seeing what you are working on. I like the idea of a 'companion can'... another 30 cal, with solar panel, effective antenna, and misc accessories. Our 28 watt panel is ideal for the Operator and it will fit in a 30 cal with room to spare for other needful things... it would be nice to offer a 'bundle' to users.

    This is pretty cool. My only complaint is the cost of that Midland GMRS mobile. For about the same price, one can buy a QYT KT-8900, which operates on 2m/MURS/70cm/GMRS and puts out 25 watts on high. It's also about the same size as that Midland.

      Commsprepper I don't think so. But as I mentioned in the other video reply, in a SHTF scenario, I doubt anyone would be worried about that.

    • @peccatumDei
      @peccatumDei 7 років тому +1

      The drawback to that approach, Aaron, is that preppers should be using their equipment before a SHTF event, so that they're familiar with it. Also for those without a ham license, getting caught with a radio that's not Part 95 compliant would lead to a fine at most, but for a licensed ham, there would be a risk of losing the ham license as well, something most of us are unwilling to risk.

    • @Aaron48219
      @Aaron48219 7 років тому

      peccatumDei and I agree. It's still legal to own and receive transmissions, just not legal to transmit without proper licensing or type approved equipment. For instance, I own multiple baofeng HTs and a mobile. Doesn't mean I'm transmitting on MURS or GMRS. It's just nice to have that option in case of an extreme emergency.

    • @tc1uscg65
      @tc1uscg65 6 років тому

      I didn't ask the question correctly. My apologizes, but I got my can today and I answered the question. You have to disconnect (at least I do) the antenna every-time if you want to close the lid. My radio is seated as far back and the bungee cord "hook" piece won't let it go back any farther. So, the OEM antenna that comes with the 115, which connected to the radio, will not let you close the lid. The mic stays connected though. No biggie as I have a couple of mobile antennas and one stationary (mounted to the side of my house, 25ft up). Thanks

    So... I'm lost. I've done quite some research but I lack the real life experience. I'm in Columbus, Ohio. How far can I expect to transmit with, say, the Micro Mobile 40 watts and a good antenna on my roof? I'm in am urban environment (suburbs) and the nearest repeater is about 20 miles away.
    Not looking for an accurate number, but an estimate. I understand HAM would be better range wise, but want to explore GMRS.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  6 років тому

      I would add to your list quality cable and connectors between your radio and antenna (no longer than 50'). With VHF/UHF line of sight is the key between radios (range). If the antennas can see each other then you will be good to go.

    • @donalderickson-si8ww
      @donalderickson-si8ww 8 місяців тому

      and the G M R S license requires no test and cover the hole family on like ham you should reach it

    @jck197 8 років тому

    What kind of range can you expect out of this?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      Line of sight but power and antenna or the main factors. That is why I like this radio, it has a full five watts and you can put an antenna up (FCC limits that to 20 feet) and really improve your range. This said with external antennas at 20 feet with good cable on relatively flat terrain you should have five miles. My case on the mountain, I'm good for 20 miles.

  • @vaughnburrows
    @vaughnburrows 8 років тому

    How far were you away from base when you checked in?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      400 yards. But it's important to remember that UHF (GMRS) is a line-of-site. If I was further away I could have raised the antenna up in the trees for additional height. FCC permits 20' antenna height for GMRS.

    Is it EMP proof?

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  8 років тому

      Can't say for sure but based on prevailing theory I would feel comfortable say "EMP resistant." This assumes the radio is in a closed can. The EMP weakness would be two things 1). The can not connected to an earth ground. 2) the rubber gasket around the lid. For long-term storage you could use copper tape around a closed lid to help with the "EMP resistance." Again - this is opinion based on theory.

    • @jliebenguth
      @jliebenguth 8 років тому

      To be EMP proof, the can is good but you would have to make sure no wires touch the can. Do any wires touch? If the object placed in the box is insulated from the inside surface of the box, it will not be affected by the EMP travelling around the outside metal surface of the box.

      The Community Europe and China Export marks are very similar. (It's quite likely that China did this intentionally.) Note however, the difference in the spacing between the "C" and the "E". Perhaps Hardened Power Systems was unaware of the difference, and applied the wrong mark by mistake. The European certification certainly makes more sense, given the excellent quality of the products.
