Great review! He is doing awesome work. I am a DIY guy. As such I am going to upgrade my battery box based on some of the technology he put into the Scout.
I have the Scout G1. Something I found out was, if you plug in the wall charger, you must put the power switch in the ON position for it to charge. I didn't do this and my unit didn't charge after a few hours on the charger. Don't recall any instructions indicating this but thought I'd mention that.
The operater G1 I’m wanting to get some time in the future. My question is I live in southeast Ohio. I want to set up a GMRS system for my property. It’s about 200 acres hills and trees . So when I’m out hunting I can communicate back to the house and others hunting in my group. Here are my thoughts Midland MXT115 for the base station. I will start with the midland 6 gain antenna put it on the roof of the house. (Side note my house is on the top of the hill.) For now I thinking of the handheld units will be Wouxun GMRS or the Baofeng GMRS. Then maybe at some other time getting the Operater G1 . I would like to know your thoughts. Maybe you have a better idea .
The chinese radios are not approved for use in the GMRS or FRS radio services. I suggest sticking with the Midland product line. DPD Productions makes a great GMRS base antenna. I recommend quality cable, connectors and antenna for your base.
This piggy backs on a video of yours I recently watched of yours. Would something like a yaesu 817 be adequate for regional communication on HF? Say up to 200 miles away? Also, will the radio be protected while in use? Thanks very much.
Dave, good question. Obviously the KX3 is a unique form factor... I do not have one to test the fit, but including knobs and connectors, I believe the KX2 is 3.45 x 7.85 x 2.45. The upper equipment bay in the Scout is 2.25″ tall, 10.5″ wide, and 8.5″ deep...
Dean, The Scout uses a PWM charge controller intended for SLA batteries. It is not compatible with LiFePo4 batteries unless they are 'drop-in' replacements for SLA, like this one: www.amazon.com/Tenergy-Rechargeable-LiFePO4-89-6Wh-Battery/dp/B005I7M7DS
hey I got a question for you could you do a video with that with a Kenwood ts-2000 I just got a Kenwood ts-2000 would you ask him if he could possibly incorporate the ts-2000 specs you know what I'm talking about do you understand what I'm trying to tell you it's kind of hard for me to explain with the video that you're showing cause I cannot see it I am totally blind could you ask him if he could possibly do a box or something like that where the tf2000 you know what I'm asking. thank you
EMP protection is theory so no one can give a definitive answer. However, if you ground the can and replace the rubber gasket with brass wool you will have more protection that a radio on a desk.
PUT your cell phone in the case and shut the lid, call your number and see if the phone rings. if it does no protection, if it does not might show a bit of protection but how much we never know. W4GSM
Commsprepper well as it stands right now the scout if you are going to "go tacticle" and mobile I guess you'd be man packing more or less. With that said what kind of antenna would you use for a GMRS & CB combination. the thing that popped into my head were the antenna combination that came with the prc-77 radio.
Bill makes some great stuff! I am loving the Operator G1!
Thanks, JJ! I'm glad you like the machine. ;-)
Thanks, Hank! Nicely done review and explanation. ;-)
Consumer feedback was the primary design input for the Scout G1, and I am glad it shows!
Thanks for the opportunity.
Oh man! Great product!!! You will be getting my money on a G/1 unit! What Yeasu radio does he have in the g1??
Great review! He is doing awesome work. I am a DIY guy. As such I am going to upgrade my battery box based on some of the technology he put into the Scout.
It does have some great features.
Perfect. Very nice package. I want one now!
Dell Schultheiss call bill - he can make that happen.
Commsprepper I'm still really new to Ham Radio. Haven't had my ticket long so I'm saving up for a HF rig. But this is definitely on my wish list.

I am not sure. I don't have my unit with me right now. I suggest you contact Hardened Power Systems and ask them.
Fantastic Modifications !!!
OUTSTANDING!
Thanks. Bill makes great stuff!
I am torn between recon and scout. I like the cosmetics of the recon, but like being able to store solar and flexibility for scout
They make good stuff.
Game changer!
Very cool package!
I've been wanting to make something similar, but I guess there's no need now. I'll just buy one of his. :-)
You will like it.
Love it! Thanks!!!!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
Nice review.
Thanks Tom.
Take my money!! I like the G/1 for bigger radios.
Not my product but I'm sure Hardened Power System will be happy to sell you a unit.
How deep is the ammo can ,Would a Wouxum KG1000G fit in it?
Too bad you don't have to RF connector on the front panel that would make it easy to mount to Radiohead that have the RF connectors on the back side
look again. Both have SO-239 connectors on the face that have cable to the rear of the case.

I'd like to try one for the new Tyt dual band dmr.
I think they have a new unit called a Recon that is other types of radios.
rf grounds use braid or foil not wire with crimped connectors
Thanks for the tip.
Nice
Thanks.

Thanks very much.
Yes! It's a fine radio. I have one and a few videos on it.
Man if i didn't just have a newborn baby i would have totally bought one for my FT-817
Congrats on the new family member, SS! That is awesome. ;-)
How long does the battery last before you got to charge the battery again for Field and at a base camp. I'm thinking about getting one.
I don't remember. Best to check with Hardened Power - they have changed the battery types. It has been awhile since I used this unit.
@@Commsprepper oh okay will do that thanks man stay safe
Do you just have the GMRS radio's antenna tucked in the back like it is in the Operator?
No. The Scout G1 is not radio specific. This said, if you chose to put a Midland Micro Mobile in the Scout you coud fit the antenna in the bay area.
So the AC wall charging cable is not included?
Yes it is. Why do you say that?
Doesn't look like it would accommodate a kx3 very well though.
Can't say - I don't have one.

Neat looking package. Great review as always.
Would the solar charge controller work with LiFePO4 batteries such as Biennopower's?
Not sure. You would have to ask Bill at Hardened Power.

Hardened Power Thank you. I appreciate the prompt reply.
Great overview! I love Hardened's stuff. Maybe I missed it, but where does the fan expel?
Both fans pull air from the top down, and expel it into the lower storage cubby.
Hardened Power That's what I figured. Thanks Bill!
I love this!!! How much for this kit?
+hrdknox2000 not sure now - you would have to check hardened power systems website
Thanks for the video. How long did it take to get your Scout G1? I ordered on December 2, 2016 and have not received yet.
Mine was a prototype so I could not provide a timeline that would mean anything. Suggest you give them a call.
Maybe they should make a MANPAC set up...
That's a good idea. You should pass that along to Bill at Hardened Power.

I don't have this radio.
there's one thing that you need to know I'm completely blind
While my radio is being stored, will the Scout G1 project it from an EMP?
EMP protection is theory so no one can give a definitive answer. However, if you ground the can and replace the rubber gasket with brass wool you will have more protection that a radio on a desk.

Commsprepper Thanks
What model HF tuner would you recommend for this unit ?
LDG tuners
Electra ft T1 fits great
I need to pick your brain regarding using this in a man packed operation, antennas
what's the question? Which unit are you referring to?
Commsprepper well as it stands right now the scout if you are going to "go tacticle" and mobile I guess you'd be man packing more or less. With that said what kind of antenna would you use for a GMRS & CB combination. the thing that popped into my head were the antenna combination that came with the prc-77 radio.
Very nice concept. However, ridiculously overpriced.
