Used to then (and still do) go to London for holidays. I remember the stalls in Traffy Sq selling birdseed. Pigeon shit everywhere. Lol. In fact it's still dead peaceful sitting in the square, at the Nat Gallery end at times. The magic's still there, but not as good.
I always thought it was an overrated pile of nothing ditto Times Square. We’ve all seen big TVs belching out non stop commercials on a loop before. Boring as hell.
I know, exactly. Everything now has to be digital or LED.....or both. I feel really nostalgic for sodium, and neon lighting because the latter is starting to disappear from our streets forever (being replaced by LED). Sodium lighting has already gone for good.....went about five years ago. Police are becoming less approachable now. The ones who are dressed like soldiers (but wearing black not khaki) think you're going to hit them if you start to approach them, while the ones who look less like soldiers are so cocky and sarcastic now, it's not worth bothering to ask them anything. Piccadilly Circus is so tatty now and litter strewn. It's lost its magic and with today's volume of traffic, it's no longer somewhere you want to wait at for long.
That is what a global empire gets you. These fools laud themselves with their ancestors' achievements but don't want to deal with the aftermath. Bunch of deluded clowns playing the victim card.
Yet many still insist we are living in a better world. Really? There was a time when rational thought prevailed before this madness free for all, systematic denigration. I prefer what we see here, now just memories, nice ones.
maxwellfan55 the world is no better and no worse. It’s just that more is reported now due to social media, mobile phones, etc. The worst massacres have happened in the past, but then one of the worst theorist acts was caught on tv just over 17 years go. I am sure my Gran would have been saying the 70s was shit and it was better in the 30s and 50s etc. Nostalgia is a funny feeling. I tell my kids about how we didn’t have mobile phones and people were more trusting of each other. I think it’s just people’s behavior has changed. I mean parenting is a lot better today than 30 years ago, but then kids are also exposed to shit on tv and social media which corrupts them. Swings and roundabouts
@@djpeekay25 Agreed that life has been transformed but no to nostalgia. All that's really improved is that people have got more cash in their pockets, relative dire poverty is obsolete in this country, and people are living longer (but at break neck pace). All this at what price? Good for those wealthy enough to build walls around them and play blind.
Back in those days anyone could walk right up Downing Street. Margaret Thatcher had the iron gates installed when she was PM in the 1980's because of the threat from the IRA.
Actually, I stand corrected. These were created by Misha Black in 1967 for the newly created City of Westminster borough. A testimony to his modern graphic style
VERY nostalgic for me! Bus Conductors!! Blimey, remember them?!
So charming. Beautiful colours and architecture. Wonderful time.
I wish I was a 20 year old and living in the 70s London. Where's the time machine!
As with now, it was great if you had money. If you didn't life was hard.
Loved growing up there went to school in the hampshire school enissmore gardens golden memories 😇🙏🎉💖♥️❤️
Imagine travelling back in time but with the same amount of money you have right now... what a fortune you'd have, to spend on 70s London :)

So much cultural enrichment
The days when you could stand outside Downing Street..
I went to Piccadilly Circus on Saturday and it's charm has disappeared because of these new digital screens. Why fix what's not broken?
The original neon signs should have been given protected status as a historic site.

In the days before diversity and multi culture . The pc brigade have won the day.

The only things I miss from 70s and 80s are the old shut door trains and Routemasters

OK, I've decided I want to go back to 1971 now. Where do I sign up?
But you have the 3 day week, cold fires and EEC membership in the coming years to look forward to. Decimalisation Rampent Inflation

Remember walking up Downing Street with dad when I was a youngster !
I was ten. ❤️

0:25 How sooty the buildings were back then.
0:38 Was it illegal to sit in Piccadilly Circus?
Just filthy and apparently so....but of course, they are the good ol' days.
0:37...what that all about?
they are sitting on the steps of 'Eros' at Picadiily circus, why the copper is moving them on I dont know,
@@highpath4776 maybe because he was bored.

That Downing Street sign at 2:30 looks suspiciously modern? I could be wrong...

They look fresh because they are vitreous enamel.
