"Gaga shines when the camera is on her in the first half. She’s positively electric, acting through song in a way we too rarely see in musical films. It’s a performance fully deserving of praise. But the second half? It’s remarkably focused on Jackson, to the film’s detriment and to Gaga’s extreme detriment. Ally becomes a hybrid saint-cipher, losing her fire and flavor. You can see her acting on the edges, but Cooper’s film no longer cares about the star once she’s been born. It becomes about him exclusively. Is the movie anti-pop, or is the character of Jackson anti-pop? Others will argue the latter, but I think it’s the former. We’re clearly supposed to laugh at Ally’s song “Why Did You Do That?,” but here’s the thing: “Why Did You Do That?” is a fucking bop. So this is Joanne, the movie? Kind of! It feels like Gaga is firmly rejecting pop by doing so many projects that frame pop as inauthentic and false. Considering I personally feel Gaga was never better than when she was doing pure pop, I can’t get on her level. Do you recommend seeing the movie overall? For its killer first half, amazing songs (love “Shallow”), and a trio of terrific performances, yes." _ from Kevin O'Keeffe
holarc the movie absolutely deserved to focus on Jackson. He was the complex one. I wasn’t impressed with lady Gaga because she wasn’t given much to work with.
I think that yes, you're supposed to laugh at that song "Why did you do that" but you're not supposed to hate it. It still sounded very Gaga to me and I think as Lady Gaga fans and Pop fans we're supposed to see the merit in music period, whereas the Jacksons of the world will have you believe that there is a right and wrong way to do it. It's something that Ally learns when he confronts her about it. Sure her song is a little silly, but it's hers and she loves it. She (and we) are not supposed to understand why he doesn't. And I don't think the films baton pass of focus towards Cooper's character is a detriment to the film. It's supposed to show a very physical interpretation of his not understanding that all music is art and all art manifests differently. He can't handle the bigger world he is exposed to once Ally is a star.
Sitting on this couch with all these people?? This story has been done four times. Gaga.. you are nothing compared to Barbra.. your A newcomer at 34 y.o still in nappies. Lol

thnx. insightful. plus, cooper was an addict already.
What sober, elegant and beautiful became Lady Gaga after this movie. Behind remained the big and ridiculous laces and heavy makeup.
Stephani looks better with brown hair.
I'm not a fan of hers. 🤔
Sam is the only real talent.
You're crazy
