The vex haven’t been a real serious threat since season of the splicer. If paracausality is the reason why they haven’t won yet, then they aren’t emphasized enough as the big threat that they are. In Bungie’s Halo they definitely emphasized the Flood for the incredible threat that it was, and even though the covenant were the upfront threat, the flood came swooping in afterwards as the “yeah we’re bigger than the covenant” problem. So will the vex be the equivalent to the flood and the Witness be the equivalent to the Covenant in this equation?

It's a shame the Devs have shoved this thing into a corner of the map off screen because I gotta say the voice actor for Chioma Esi is absolutely KILLING IT every single week
I mean, it is crazy that the first confirmation of what the Veil actually is, is in Week 9 of Season of the Deep. I know most lore heads suspected that the Veil was the collective consciousness of the universe, but I think the standard player still gets lost in this discussion.
@@MyelinGames I don't want to get too into my issues with the drip fed narrative, the important events happing off screen, the "convenient" sudden lore drops that show bungie were always 100% going to give you the information but in a different way and if we are patient with them we will get said info, bungie is just exploring different ways to deliver content. Because to be honest I think we all feel the same way about it now 👎.
Tbh I appreciate you doing these videos mostly because I refuse to log in, find the off map icon, load into an empty instance to look at a computer to hear a radio diary message for important lore.
Really makes me wish that Ikora played a bigger role in seasons since it's her VA too. I hope threr will be more of her in Final Shape.

If the veil is memory and conscious, it makes sense as to why cayde is back. When the traveller connected to the veil, it brought EVERYTHING back, into one final shape.
I feel like they are pointing more towards the veil and traveler being allegories for Memory and Action (Doing). The function of the two halves being to remember what works in what situation, the other to create it. Now that they are connected, THEY now know that Cayde is the man for the job :). OUR god of Cunning and Mischief.

When talking about para-causality, I like to think of the base word first (causality). Causality is essentially a sequence of cause-and-effect events. These events may have predictable details based on their interactions with reality itself. Many like to refer to the more expanded version of this idea as fate or even determinism. The prefix "para" typically refers to something which is "outside of" or "beyond" the normal convention. Using these definitions, para-causality can be described as "Things which occur outside of normal cause-and-effect events." Which almost always involves space magic in Destiny's case. The Vex deal exclusively in causality, so they are not a good match for space magic. . . yet.

Anyone who says the vex should not be part of final shape has not been paying attention to the last 2 years of lore. The veil matches descriptions back in VOG grimiore and some other real old vex mysteries
the vex are a boring enemy, completely sterile in design and would basically ruin the game if the focus was solely on them.

There literally a time sprawling hive mind, hellbent on being the only thing across time, that formed from silicia into thought, discovered mathematics that allowed that to creat the selves from the cosmos, how the fuck is that boring?
It took Bungie 140 days to finally start to explain what the Veil was in-game after it was mentioned 68 times in the campaign and post campaign and everyone seemingly already knew what it was. Remember that next time you feel yourself getgin sucked into the The Final Shape's hype train.

Not really as Osiris did not even know what it was, only mentioned that Rohan had some idea what it was, and we already had an idea in game from a cloud strider saying that it is the memory and thoughts of everyone in the universe.
To play Devil's Advocate just a little, the hints about the Veils true nature were there. That it is the Darkness; at least as much as the travler is the light:
the Cloud Striders living for a short time while guardians live forever
The Veil is underground while the travler is sky.
The heart of the Black Garden, a literal heart of darkness, was a copy of it.
Etc...
The problem was we thought, because of all of Bungie's promo material, that role was filled by the pyramids. So no one ever even began consider that was an option

I feel like people kinda ignored this idea for a while. Felt like I was going crazy that I didn't see more people mentioning that the Veil was the Darkness equivalent of the Traveler.
No. That is just lazy writing and trying to link old lore with it. The scheme is drip feed information so they make the most money with overpriced pay walls. And they CAN’T even organize the story in a decent way due to splitting it up in the seasonal paywalls. It’s a joke idk how anyone still accepts this as legit content in 2023.

I think that the Sol Divisive splintered off to create the "Black Garden" (which seems to be a quarantined section of a planet where the Traveller set down and/or terraformed, almost like a mini throne world) as a way to emulate The Veil's functions, but they needed Darkness to do so, and the nearest (or maybe most convenient?) source was the Hive and their rituals. So they "worshipped the Darkness" by participating in the Sword Logic (we now know that it's tied to The Witness) and created a manifestation of Darkness that would inject the missing paracausality needed to complete their Veil copy.
That's why we had to destroy it and why it was preventing the Traveller from being able to heal itself back in D1. They could have even been unknowingly been influenced by The Witness via the Veil opening thing that's on Neptune and that's what caused the split between the main Vex and the Sol Divisive. The Black Garden even has a song that hums in the background, just like the Veil (Tenebrium Destiny OST). It seems to be where Savathun got her song from. Very interesting connections forming nonetheless.
Also, could The Nine use the Veil to manifest bodies? Would they use Strand to do so? Or would they have their own unique interaction with it to take a completely different form?
I think we'll eventually get the language about the Vex "worshipping" retconned away. The behavior and concept doesn't match how we know the Vex work. I'm guessing it'll be explained away as one of these: 1) they were doing things exactly as they were told to do 2) they were emulating behavior seen in naturally humanoid creatures, 3) they were posed for best transmission of some paracausal power that just happen to look like worship poses. Individual Vex units just don't have that kind of agency, they don't have enough emergent personality, it's always a Mind "orchestrating" a group to do something. In the end, they're still micro-organisms reacting to stimuli that stumbled onto group behavior that looks like consciousness. I don't think we'll find Vex in the river of souls.
The vanilla d1 campaign ended with the vex, only makes sense that the vex are the main enemy after the final shape.
This took way too long, but happy it's here now! My first thought is how 'The Weave' we tap into via Strand relates to The Veil. I suppose Strand is the psychic threads that connect all conscious minds, while The Veil is the physcial representation of all those minds. I wonder how Stasis fits into this paradigm?
Osiris actually talks about what the elements are on Neomuna during LF. The Darkness is about manipulating the Psychic Energy using pure Will (Control makes more sense for Strand, but Will is the correct term) this affecting domain of the Non Physical. And if you affect one, 'ripples' appear in the other. I.e. Too much light scatters the Dark and Too much Dark scatters light (litterally the explanation behind No Rez Zones)
I.e. Stasis is about Enforcing Will so strongly that it freezes all Casual Things (Time, Matter Space, .etc) it only appears to be ice/crystals as a bonus effect in the Physical Domain whereas its actually emptyness itself.
Strand is about Releasing Will. You allow yourself to 'flow with the river' going where natural pathways of Darkness flow between unconsious minds. We are the boat and allow the river (the web) to guide us to our destinations. Once you accept that the flow is something to relinquish yourself to, Strand, then will you be able to weave and unravel and tangle the Web around yourself. The Green Web is a physical representation of the hidden network that the Darkness operates in.
We had trouble with Strand in that Rocky Training Montage cause we tried to apply a Stasis method of thinking to Strand. Trying to control the "River" leads with you getting pulled under and you drown in it. Which is why we kept dying till we started being flexible and adapting to it.
This bit is spit ball theory
This concept of Controling the External (Stasis) & Allowing the External to Control You (Strand), that might be hint at a third subclass of Darkness where you isolate yourself from the External. And it might something like Silence i.e the isolation of Psychic Energy from the unconsious web and has the abilities of like self buffing and possibly like disrupting other abilites that are around you.

We meet the strders
We access this place as an early story mission
The drip begins
We begin learning Strand while ALSO trying to slow/stop the invastion
We come back here as Osiris discovers more
the drip continues
And by the time we "master strand", we have an understanding what the Veil
as Calus closes in and we fight to stop him.
Yeah, that's not at all the same or relatable. And were still spending energy on how LF could have been changed? Why not so many other terrible story expansions?
So in practice, that sounds like drip feeding strand aspects until we unlock all of them towards the end of a season and making Calus the season's final boss.... am I reading this right? Because if so, that would've went over like a lead balloon too
@@ThePowerOfOneThePowerOfTwothats not how it came across, and think less season and more campaign. Its a provided better context to what we are doing or fighting for in the campaign. It’s less Dripping strand or what have you and more like lore unlocks as you do each mission step to seek out. (IE same training montage but with more world building)
Either way, Calaus was the end boss of the campaign so Idk where your point was going in that respect.

Strand as a power and our understanding of it, would have happened at the pace it happened but in parallel to that, as we explore Neomuna, complete missions and activities, the need to visit that out of the way corner to learn more about the setting and the Veil could happen at the same time so that by the finale, the player has a sense of the stakes.
@@Real28 So you wouldn't have found it engaging to play the campaign, develop strand (including the understanding of it) while accessing the Lore of Neomuna over the same period of time and by the final mission being like "Oh.... THIS is why we HAVE to stop Calus!" ?

I don't think Lakshmi was trying to connect people to the veil on Earth. The log just said how the Veil is very similar to the Vex network, just an organic and "paracausal" one. I think she was trying to recreate the Veil's effects using the Vex network as a stand-in. Like a more specialized "Black Heart" (that was meant to be a Vex copy of the Veil), specifically to take advantage of Vex time travel instead of some cosmic web of connections that required paracausality to even interact with.
Also myelin, I think you might be spot on. For them to say that the cloudstryders are part vex makes so much more sense. They could be the prototype for the vex and slowly turn into the radiolarian.
The description of the Veil as a web of consciousness rings very similar to the description of the River of Souls in Neomuna culture ("No, that's the crazy part, we ARE the river!")
Explains why the Neomuni would start thinking of a metaphysics based on collective consciousness flowing together if their civilization grew out of being connected to some network of universal consciousnesses.
It is a fair bit beyond metaphysics really, even beyond the more fringe elements of theoretical quantum physics when you think about it.
But that's the essence of Paracausal things, they don't follow the immutable laws of physics.
The Meta Physical, not to mention any other Philosophical, abstract or argument of conciousness (Mind) is inherently limited by our understanding of physics, chemistry and biology.
All of which have quantifiable law's and measurements.
Paracausality differs in that these fundamental laws and restrictions do not apply, one can literally create something from nothing with a Paracausal power.
Whereas the Vex, just we in reality, cannot use or account for Paracausal forces to do anything.
Consider how unfathomably advanced the Vex are in understanding and applying causal (real world) science & technologies to be as big of a threat as they are without any Paracausal power, knowledge or ability.
They created a collective, or rather harmonious communal, conciousness without the use of any Paracausal forces.
Sunderesh needed to reverse engineer Vex tech, the fragment of a Ishtar & Breytech Vex mind & Warmind AI hybrid and utilise Breytech's SIVA & clarity refined Vex Radiolaria; And even then she STILL needed to use a Paracausal artefact to achieve a an unrefined fraction of what the Vex had already achieved.
Literally half the steps required the Vex and the majority of the remaining half required a Paracausal power.
There is no way, at least in my summation, that Neomuna or Sunderesh could be the beginnings of a form of proto-Vex. (Which is more of a response to Myelin in the video than to your comment, sorry)

That Maya Sundaresh SURVIVED the process of making an imprint for an Exoframe that became Lakshmi 2 is interesting. The she was able to connect people to the Veil and have them survive and thus begin the Founding of Neomuna is also interesting, We know the City lies to it's people about it's founding, about it's history and about the true purpose of the Cloud Striders (which is more than merely protecting the City and it's citizens from the Vex) their short lives ensure they don't stray too far from the Cities or should I say the Veil/Maya's control. I believe Maya Sundaresh still lives, and is at the very heart of Neomuna.

Actually, it was said while worded differently in the post campaign with one of the Cloud Striders that the Veils is the memory and thoughts of everyone in the universe, all interconnected, related to an exotic quest line.
So veil is consciousness or the darkness given form.

I remember something about Clovis going trough the Europa portal to the vex home solar system.
There, their star was circled by a Dyson sphere and the solar system was some kind of giant forge.
And it's trough that portal that the vex came to our system.

The Vex origin theory is spooky. That would be very interesting. Man the whole Neomuna stuff is just like the dev played the Echoes of the Eye dlc.
I wonder if a ghost will revive any of these characters? The vex, they are basically the witness in multiple body’s. The witness is one form with everyone inside, the vex is a network or whatever and they all connected. It’s crazy I hope bungie does it well.
Our guardian might be one of them, an AI in one of Maya’s complex mistakes is for the 4th scientist I believe on Venus in D1.
Vex is the opposite of the witness, literally. They want to spread everywhere, create meaning and chaos. One mind in billions of bodies.
Witness is millions in one, wanting to rid the world of chaos.
The vex are the perfect enemy for the witness.
They aren’t really alike at all. You meant the Vex are hive minded. The Witness isn’t a hive mind, that’s an entire people merged into one all powerful being. The Witness is on a quest to find its purpose, the Vex know their purpose…. To assimilate all and make everything Vex

Think the best way to explain paracausality is to say someone or something imposing their will over reality, and therefore this is something that escapes the Vex ability to simulate and thus impredictable to them. And the best example i can think of is LOTR, when Gandalf says 'you shall not pass' he's imposing his will to the balrog and, since he's stronger, makes it impossible for the balrog to actually cross the bridge. Or when Galadriel sends 'the necromancer' away saying 'you have no power here'. Or when ACDC said 'let there be rock', and it came to pass.

From what I gather, the veil is essentially the manifestation of time. If it is the gestalt memory of the universe (presumably past, present, future, especially since the war cult used it to see into the future(or possible futures?)) then it basically might as well be. Also the obvious design inspiration from an hourglass. it makes sense that if you combine the physical (light), thought/non-physical (darkness), and the veil (assuming time) then you could make the universe into whatever you want.
Yea, the Viel is literally a collection of information on the entire universe. By communing with the Viel you can learn pretty much anything
I love how the vex is being incorporated even if it seemed like it was heading this way for awhile. I feel like people aren't giving bungie enough credit that they can make Vex more enticing and give personality

Chioma is such a Debbi downer. For the record, I’d have join Clovis in season of the seraph.
We might get Maya/Lakshmi creating the Vex and causing a stable time loop trope, but what I think more likely is the Witness nudging them and Clovis into accidentally creating truly paracausal Vex. That would let them use a proven final shape tool (the Vex, according to The Unveiling), and adapt it to work with how the introduction of paracausality disrupted their capability to make perfect stability.

You know what, this finally made me realize what's really going on with the Gardener and Winnower (or whatever you want to call them at this point).
The Winnower is obsessed with the Final Shape. Even though the Final Shape is an emergent property of the two of them, it's sort of enraptured the Winnower, and the Gardener is trying to free it from its obsession before it kills everything. The universe and everything in it, the Gardener and even itself in the end.
Something small I heard. 'I don't feel anything.' its the same thing the drifter said in his story about his neighbors kid. Just a fun parallel I noticed.

Wouldn't the vex gate on Europa be the origins of the vex because of the forge star?
Nah the Vex have a unknowable count of forge stars in the Universe. Also they like to time travel a lot because things like the Black Garden exist outside of space and time, not to mention the VoG. It wouldnt surprise me if they were made as a copy of the Veil and its Psychic network that gained sentience went back in time millions of years so that they are the right age for Maya Sunderesh to study, find, create the situation where Maya and the Veil meet so they themselves exist.
The portal on Europa is how Clovis got his resources to make Exos on Europa but they had been fucking around in Sol way before that.
Considering what we saw it do, when the lore refers to the veil opening a door to the memories of the universe, could it be referring to the traveler as the holder of the memories of the universe considering it put a hole in the Traveler?
Also what if the Traveler hasn't been causing these golden ages all this time, and rather it's been turning up at their start to document them for galactic record?
The Veil didn’t put a hole in the Traveler, the Witness did. That theory would be dope but in D1 they established when the Traveler came, human life spans increased and our tech went leaps/bounds further. Same thing happened with the Witness original people, they were on the brink then bam, technical marvels and they had the Traveler for eons according to Ahsa
@@Devil0027 That doesn't strictly mean the Traveler couldn't have rolled up just as it was about to happen both times but yeah it's just a shower thought at the end of the day. I just hope the story we do get is worth it in the end.

I havent played destiny in over a month, but Im glad I have these vids to keep me in the loop. Especially since these are some of the BIGGEST lore drops we've had in a long time. I'm not the biggest fan of the delivery method Bungie chose, but its better than just stuffing the info onto the lore tab of an armor set

There was a fun conversation I had with some other *Lore guys* around the D1 days on /v/ and /vg/ that have become fully realized theory crafting. The Vex and the exo are inexorably linked and i
f either entity exist at any point in the timeline then so too must they both. And at the same time the vex existing at all ever means they exist forever. Time travel is fun ya'll.
I have a very loose idea of a theory that the vex themselves are the Final Shape. The Final Shape is supposed to converge the universe into one final thing, right? Well, what does the vex do and what is their directive? 1) Make everything vex, eventually turning everything in the universe into one thing, and 2) rid the universe of all paracausaility(I think this is still the main objective outside of the sol divisive).
Glad I am not the only one thinking this is the origin story of the Vex.
I remember reading a comment many years ago about explaining why the Vex are the final shape, can't seem to find it now but I guess they were right, some what.

What I suspect is, the Traveler and the veil are two parts of a whole. Just imagine the traveler sitting all nice and comfy IN the back side of the Veil. As you said, the Veil is of the consciousness of the universe, and from what we've seen the traveler stores consciousness or transports a soul or what ever to another existence. When the Witnesses people first find the traveler, it is hiding deep underground. What was it hiding from? The Veil? Maybe the traveler is a rebel and somewhat broke the universe. I may not have the plot right, but it does seem odd when you look at the two of them. Be well all and TY myelin for the great vid's :).

How is this the origin of Vex, if there were already present at the time when they arrived at Neptune?
@myelingames I think do have a neat oversimplified answer. But let’s start with causality: that means you make a certain cause and you get a certain effect…always…same cause gets you the same effect. But with paracausality you have magic, so you can have the same cause and get a different effect. On top of this, you can violate probability. If there’s a 1% chance of winning, you can get that 1% outcome 100% of the time. We make our own destiny. It’s an act of will.
The Veil being linked to universal consciousness must mean it's heavily linked to Egregore right? Thr Veil *looks* fungal, and egregore is considered a fungus. Egregore also links the consciousness of individuals, as seen with Calus' experiments on the Glykon

Myelin you are absolutely on to something here how great of a magic trick would it be a bungee was like yeah focus over here on the witness the final shape etc but at the same time were building and establishing the beginning the middle and the end of what is to come next and this whole time you thought the vex were some unknown creature out there when in actuality they are descendants of humanity that went completely rogue trying to figure out the veil
This reveal hits with the same impact of "Save....Martha!"

That time when Bungie created a new word and called Paracausality, so when you look it up it says, "Paracausality is basically a neologism (a "new word") that Bungie created for this game. Its basically a synonym for "magic"."........ also yeah it just linked to the destinywiki kek

1 note: pats causality is a real world term but we have no examples of it because it breaks physics, outside like the Big Bang . Just like “paranormal” meaning “outside the norm,” paracausality means “outside the restrictions of cause and effect. Every action in the universe has a cause and effect. I throw a rock and it goes a bit, the cause of the rock’s flight being me throwing it, the flight being the effect. Paracausality is manifested in destiny as our guardians doing all this space magic. The cause of snapping my warlock’s fingers having the effect of sending out a bunch of fireballs. This does not follow the laws of physics and reactions (effects) are being created out of thin air, with no rational cause. Thus it is impossible for the vex to simulate because it is impossible to predict something out of nothing accurately

I really hope your sneaking suspicion of the Vex doesn't pan out at all. Bungie is already making the Destiny universe smaller. I def don't need a: "They were you all along" origin to the Vex.
So if the vex do gain the ability to simulate paracausality, would they then be able to wield light and darkness powers? My thought process is if Quoria was able to simulate Oryx sufficiently enough to somewhat control the taken, would they not be able to do the same for darkness, or the light?

The fact that Clovis and Maia both have the same God Complex yet going different paths but for the same goal. Lakshmi is one of the Hindu Gods who of which governs over: beauty, prosperity, fortune ,wealth, love, abundance and power (which ironically Maya is associated with illusion). She assists the God Vishnu to create,protect and transform the universe.
Now that we got that out, it makes sense now and guess who do we know are doing that same exact thing with the traveler?
The Witness is literally Ermac from Mortal Kombat. Don't believe me? Look up Ermac's lore.
The Vex must be terrified of Ikora with all the "paracausality" she wields, you'll never know what super she'll use next.
My hypothesis is that they needed more time to work on the content of the Final Shape so they switched it for what we got in Lightfall. This makes me believe that even more. It would make the tonal shift make more sense too if this was meant to be a bombastic start to the next ten years; it also would explain why we are experiencing a Vex narrative before the end of the current light v dark SaGa. The reason for saving answers about the Veil for the seasons being an experimental way of telling the story makes more sense in this context also, because a sane person wouldn't do something like this before their grand finale.

It’s crazy how many ways Maya is parallel to Clovis. She was manipulated by the Witness, thinking her achievements were her ideas, was an unwitting pawn of the Witness, doesn’t realize her whole legacy is lie and someone else’s accomplishments, fell to ego and madness, hid her dark secrets and died with her reputation in tact, achieved immortality, and didn’t suffer any consequences, and wasn’t even ever exposed as the monster she’d become. It’s a wonder if she’s even still around or not, but, it would be fitting then, if she ended up imprisoned by the people she’d wronged, just as Clovis is now. Clovis is trapped on Europa, the Bray sisters being his jailers. Where he’s left to rot in his frozen prison of his own making.
Man wouldn't it be really cool if this was delivered in a cohesive story that doesn't go away after some arbitrary amount of time? I really love the content model of this game. It certainly isn't corrosive in every possible way, right guys?
These missions are part of lightfall, you don't need any season to do them, just the expansion, and they don't go away, since they are part of said base expansion.

It's weird how different the Veil and the Traveller are, given that they're supposed to be the same kind. Size amd shape, obviously, then how much they can be interacted with, agency... The Traveller has its own agenda, the Veil is just hanging there.
The Vex could be interesting if they were to actually have personality. If those simulated researchers somehow became part of the collective and contacted us or even fought against us, then it could get interesting. Right now, and for most of Destiny they’ve just been evil robots who hate everything that is not them.

Maybe the Vex are humanities version of the Witness' people becoming one being ?
We share the same theory about the potential origin of the vex. I can’t remember exactly how I reached this but a few weeks ago. This was my prediction that the people of Neomuna become the vex in the future.
I wonder if with all this Vex stuff we'll end up interact with timeline - traveling Elsie again, maybe hopping timelines with her or something. Dunno.

I’ve thought for a few years now that the vex were some sort of rokus basilisk entity. Meaning, the vex being time traveling being(s) with the apparent sole purpose being existing. I thought how do they begin. Original I thought it was Clovis wanting to be the common ancestor of all of humanity, evolving into humanity being his creation (vex being the final form of exo’s however this makes the paradox of, Clovis used vex to make exos which turn into vex and are used to make exos evolve into vex which…..:into infinity).
Also could have been Rasputin back before s/seraph where his goal was to control/protect all and after getting shoved into a metaphorical locker by big bad witness/darkness/nezarac obsessed to grow and study the dark. Obsessed over the paracausality, and constantly pushed to evolve until it finally understands it but is too late, so it goes back in time to assure it’s creation and it beats the darkness.
Idk, most of my theories about the vex origins consist of something/someone growing into infinity trying to keep itself alive alive then going back to assure its existence like a Rokus basilisk thought experiment. Something with warped views boiling down the entire cosmos and eternity into butterfly effects that go to support its existence. Caring about humanity but assuring it is around to care for what humanity is left but having no issues killing massive chunks of humanity throughout time to achieve it end goal. Because it’s fighting for the very end to be whatever humanity is left under its care and control to assure nothing can harm them, forever.
Origin of the Vex, very interesting
I don't really see how this could look like a vex origin story without getting all time-paradoxical... but it is certainly planting the seeds for the Vex obtaining paracausality, which has been our main advantage over them this whole time.
The vex are already wibley wobley with the timey wimey stuff anyway. I don't think it would be a good way to have their origin but it would be really easy plot spackle for the narrative team.

I had thought a while ago that we had somehow created them, especially once we learn about their cloud ark, but why would they come back to destroy everything?
What if the reason the Vex couldn't simulate paracausality was because the paracausal was like the equivalent of conscious thought to them, have you ever tried to reinterput your own subconscious dreams, In waking life, we think in metaphors, knowing how to interpret them as metaphors. But when we think in metaphors during REM sleep, the brain can interpret those metaphors literally, the Vex are literally incapable of communicating via metaphors which would indicate they have no form of waking consciousness and are only capable of precieving the world through the subconscious maybe the Veil is their link to waking consciousness.
