Thanks for the information. I respect the fact that you used this as a teachable moment without bashing anyone.
My thoughts exactly, thanks for showing us and being a reputable, respectful man!!!
Dude thank you!!!! This is the biggest headache we face at Holley! Power, grounds to battery! Engine grounds grounds grounds! I’ve seen worse for sure but smart coils alone are VERY picky!
Grounds are important. Understatement of the year, so far. Good vid, Devin!
We're racing on the race track we're not racing in the garage. I like that! Very informative as always thanks!
“Little stuff turns into big stuff when it stops working”. Quote of the day. My streetcar worked great, wired the wrong way going low-mid 5’s in the 1/8th, until it didn’t! Spent an entire race season learning and paying for it
its the truth man
Good thing you didn't bash the other shop, Shows true character and professionalism on your end.
thank you. i have no interst in bad mouthing others, i hope they watch the video and learn from it. the customer sent it to them so fingers crossed
Excellent Video, sound advice, you are truly a professional teacher that focuses on giving the right information, such a shame that a great looking car did not have the TLC applied to its electrical wiring. Oh well that's life I suppose. It was also a pleasure to hear that no one got slagged off! Thank you Devin great Job.
TERMINAL STRIPPPSSSS
Damn a celebrity in the house .love your work matt keep it up .hope you guys stay safe up there .
I am in the middle of my first holley efi install and I do thank you for the little but of advice. It doesn't matter how experienced you are I am a 22 year gm and ase master tech and u am still learning
Wiring is an art...You are the Bob Ross of wiring!! Thanks for your time!
I have been "USING" this and other videos of your for the past year or so learning how to wire correctly to begin my junk. Still crazy overwhelming but I think in time I will complete a beautifully wired POS. Seriously thank you sir.
I don't how this came across my feed, but I am sure glad it did. Awesome video Devin! It's good to see when someone takes their time in explaining the reason for good clean wiring. Got yourself a subscriber.
Hey brother love the video I have been in the car audio industry for 30 years one of my specialties is fixing electrical Gremlins I know what we do is different but a lot of the problems we Face are the same I tell all my guys by yourself a good multimeter and teach them ohm law and Resistance to ground everybody looks at the power side and forgets about the ground just because it's grounded does it mean it's good the multimeter does not lie. A lot of problems I see are due to the incorrect installation of the product the failure is in the install not the product. Also I preach about the longevity of the install a product is only as good as the installer that did it, I love where you say that I learn something everyday in this industry you can learn something everyday experience is the greatest teacher of all peace my brother keep the videos rolling
Great video! A little hard to follow, only because I am not as familiar as some. I'm in the middle of a boosted efi build for the first time. I've been a witness to many bashing other builders just so that their candle shines a little brighter. Not you, though. Super classy move! I would enjoy watching as many of your videos as I may come across. Thanks for sharing!
Everything he is saying about grounding, grounding EFI, & ground wires, is so accurate & so important! Listen to this guy & learn. Don't make the mistakes he is going to fix
It was definitely this person or that person. I learned a ton from this video and its always a good reminder of how far I have to go! Thanks!
I've spent months wiring my car after spending 4k with a shop in FL. After planing and understanding the importance of wire routing and insulation my car now works all the time. Nothing worse than being at the track chasing problems. This is a great video Respect!!!!
That is one nice car.Love to see an in depth walk thru of it.
Same....badass.
This is a true good hearted TECHNICIAN
Devin vanderhoof is the man,it was available to help me on the holley installation ,i learn the grounds on the holley are very important after week !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks man this is the kinda information we could all use!! Can't wait to see more and learn something new from that also!!
What a classy dude...there's no need to bad mouth anyone, we're all here to learn! Classy my man! Classy!!!
Thanks for the video! I could see myself doing one or two of those mistakes on accident. Hopefully we get to see the whole wiring process, even if it's just a camera in the corner doing a timelapse.
Nice job on the video you pointed out some real interesting stuff I agree with you I always believed you didn't need any more wire on a car than you needed PS thanks for the video and your work is very neat and professional
Thanks man I watch all your videos I've learn alot building my tt427 ls
Thanx for the tips, I'm starting to plan the wiring for my dominator and you gave me a lot to think about. The first thing I bought was multiple ground straps and one of the msd solid state four relay pack, looks like I'll need a couple more
Awesome video, alot of really good information. Thanks for taking the time to educate everyone.
Keep up the great videos in learning a ton and can't wait for more!!
Great video often overlooked I like to look at the wiring harness of the car as a measure of the overall workmanship of the car.
Hi this is John from San Jose California really enjoyed your video and grounds are so doggone important I learned some new lessons enjoy what your you're telling us it's all good stuff keep up the great work and information flowing thanks
Much respect to you! Great video with so much good information.
Super, super helpful and instructive. Thank you so much!!
Two beautiful rides i love thanks buddy for sharing.
Just because a material can conduct electricity doesn't mean it is the correct way to build a circuit. There is engineering in play that is necessary for high speed control circuits to function AND communicate. Run your wiring like you would run your fuel plumbing. Neat, attached firmly, as short as possible and away from adverse environments. Good content and thanks for sharing.
You’re a true man with CLASS
I appreciate ya dv! Thank you for taking the time to make the videos and run the channel for the sharing of a wealth of knowledge. Call me a geek but I'll be taking notes 🤣
best video I have ever seen! this mentality applies to everything It frustrates me to no end when everyone wants to cut corners weather its for profit of a shop or cost on the customer. Listen to this man I don't care if you are just replacing you Toyota corolla's alternator just do the job right and get the good part slow down and pay attention please. Thank you for your video.
Very interesting.. thanks for sharing.
Some devices need a direct connection to battery so they do not get interference or back feed from other items.
The 29 people who disliked this video were obviously hit with 16v or maybe even a magneto, while being very well grounded recently!
And understandably still get kinda "hot" when the path of least resistance is discussed...
Great vid Devin love your work. Thx
Ty Kindly for the informal info! Good to know! And very nice L@@King Detail too! Keep up your detail work!!!
Thank you we appreciate what you do helped me out a bunch my car was a mess
Great info, thanks for making the videos!
My 393 Cleveland, Full River Battery in the rear, was ground to the transmission mount, nothing to the block, nothing from chassis to block, nothing from block to firewall, nothing from firewall to panel on passenger side, nothing from either cylinder head to firewall. So my issues was hard starting (obviously) killed my coil and damaged my Ignition module. Engine had been previously on engine dyno. In car the lack of ground, lack of spark to spark plugs, would foul up, black sooty, on Premium 98 petrol, require more fuel for start up. And these were only some of my issues. Hence, pulled the whole lot out. I have the video on my You Tube Channel. Wouldn’t mind asking you a couple questions.
Can you do another video of the blue car when you’re finished and show the corrections?
yeah thats my plan
Thanks for taking the time for us all 👍's up dude
Great info as always!
Jus RT a note on your relay comment. The idea of using a solid state relay over a mechanicaly triggered relay is in a violently shaking environment, you can literally bounce the contact leg on a relay. I've had a flight monitor show loss of continuity as much as 3 times a second. Maybe a higher end solid state (believe it or not, jet fighters and NASA use a pretty inexpensive one). I'm a wiring guru, and grounds are way to often over looked. When I worked with FordMotor Company, we found most issues (in most automobile makes) in premature failures were from too high of a resistance to ground.
Good video. Hard to stress the importance of proper grounding. It can cause all kind of issues.
Great video!!! Thanks for sharing all the information. The car is beautiful he invested a lot of money just needs the wiring fixed. I don't think you are bashing anyone because the car doesn't even run. It would be different if the car actually ran well and had sloppy wiring but this is very poor quality work.
Excellent video!
There is NOTHING and i mean NOTHING more frustrating then chasing wiring gremlins when your not as knowledgeable with it as somebody that really understands it. Solid advice rite here bud. You got to take your time with wiring.
Appreciate all the info you post, very informative and grat explanations. A friend recommended that I subscribe to your channel as I have a very also. Thanks for all the info and support you give Devin, keep it up brother.
youre welcome bud
you sound like Badger from Breaking Bad
never saw that show, no idea. friends say i sound like bill burr and charlie from always sunny in philly
Not to be an ass but he uses the term "uh" every other word.....and I have to admit I do the same thing lol
HOLY CRAP.. I kept thinking I know that voice, but your absolutely right . great videos though
honestly he sounds like Andy Ried KC chiefs coach, Even says a lot of the same words he does LMFAO
Dude dan you are awesome brother great job bro
Great video mate I’m sure we have all done these things
Good stuff , thanks!
Glad you posted this cause I would have made these mistakes
Waiting to see you teach electron flow for DC systems... ;-)
To a noob it all looks ok. Thanks for showing what not to do if i ever go full race car I will know
Great video
I really enjoyed watching the video. I realised a few months back with my own street/race car, i had no motor ground for 4 race meetings. When i paid to have my car rewired, battery in rear, 7AMP ignition, NA car, i had two under sized ground cable in the whole car. The main battery ground went to the trans mount, rubber insulated, nothing to engine, other ground went to rear bumper mount, not bare metalled, not even done up tight. Do you think when these things happen any engine damage can occur? Ground has to find its way back somehow. Couple newer items, shifter cable, look a bit ordinary.
You should break it down a little more. That spark energy getting dumped into the rest of the ground path is mint.
i noticed at the to ground input setup. you put staging output pwm to a + output and then changed it to a pwm - negative. doesnt the output have to be pinned to a p- as well? mine throws up a warning when i did it same as you did. (hp v5 ecu)
So if I run a ground from my battery to my block, would I use a flag pole type battery connector to run to my disconnect then to the frame? I’m not using an efi system, and definitely don’t have the caliber car in the video. Just confused on how to run a shutoff i
Interesting vid,thanks.
Side note , your setup on the race car is good .
Very interesting video.
Can i ask why you would not use one large 100 amp relay to power all the coils?
Can you use a Bluetooth ground? I heard they are like a multiple earthed neutral with a negative effect and can rectify from ac to dc. But only if you specifically use a permanent magnet hi impedance reluctor on your starter coil and run your injectors in series with your Can bus system. This apparently takes bits from certain packets and packages them in your Word so that the bytes are happy! Is this true or not??? It seems to make sense!!!!
Dude I’ve fixed 20 cars wired by other shops just like this. I feel your pain
I wire industrial equipment using the same principles and the things run for decades with no electrical ghosts.
Nice video!
Is it possible to shorten the to sensor leads or do you need to shop around to find the right length for your needs.
Looking forward to seeing the car when you’re done with re-wiring.
it should be out and about when the tracks in his area start opening back up
Speaking on the direct grounds from the battery to ECU. I absolutely get it now.
I just had none race car with a ground from the battery to the frame. The ground for the engine was from the motor mount to the frame. Guess what, nothing has a ground on the engine if they motor mount is disconnected. Even though the motor is attached to the frame and the battery grounds to the frame. 🤯🤯🤯
💪💪💪💪👍 he's right just listen and do it the right way you don't have to do it twice
Can the egt’s and O2’s be put together and terminated into their own Mil spec bulkhead connector?
I think it’s a good call on not saying who did the job. It looks like with some education and fine tuning, they could do a really nice job.
Good info!
I feel like this is what happens when you become too comfortable with stuff. When I installed my Terminator X I was so nervous to mess it up that I made sure to follow the books by the letter and if there was something that I felt I didn't fully understand I made sure to either talk to someone who knows the Holley systems very well or I called their tech support. Now six months later I've had absolutely no electrical issues with the truck and it has worked flawlessly since day one and I've never touched an aftermarket EFI system before this, I have done Automotive Electrical in the past but it's different working With stock cars that have stock electrical systems in them.
Same here!! If you read all instructions and follow them correctly… and also do a lot of research… everything turns out fine! No matter if it’s electrical , mechanical or whatever!!!
How many CI is that particular Sonny Engine?
Super clean execution. I see the battery is in the passenger compartment. I know what the rule book says, is this a car for non-sanctioned events, or do the tech guys just not care?
Where would u put the Coil grounds if u have no bolt holes in the Heads like that?
Do you have to tear down part of the engine to do the rewire? Its gonna be a complete PITA if that isnt the case. I'm asking cause i have NO experience with anything like these cars.
Gonna make a video of what you have taught me about wiring to prove it can be done just take your time
using this logic/information to fix the wonky factory wiring on my Japanese luxury sedan lmao (it doesn't have dedicated grounds for anything)
The corvette is beautiful. ....
You said it! Ground Loops.
Do it right or do it twice. It's in good hands now tho. 👊🏼
What EV1 connectors do you use to clear Wilson fuel rails and Billet atomizer injectors? I've had to Dremel mine to fit.
these are from ksvlooms where i buy alot of my materials from
My hp system only said positive wire directly to the battery. Im only running single coil though
Gotta do a bump on this video. This same thing happened to me. Had the wrong Fuel tech harness installer wire my truck. Needless to say it cost me $5000 of complete wasted money. If you have a holley and want the best guy to wire your shit…take it to Devin at HCR. Best in the business.
Thank you for the kind words man. Sorry for your bad history
What a mess,, thanks for sharing
please upload vids of re work process.
All circuits have their own frequency or noise. This is why there are separate grounds for this reason. This isolates this issue and reduces unwanted noise in the circuits. @Hammersrt
Im not that smart but im try to be more mechanically inclined , how many grounds am i supposed to have , i got a ground off cylinder heads goin to a chassis ground , The 2nd Ground connection is from negative battery terminal to the block , whats the third ground ?
Great video, how about one showing after you fix it. Thank You
Thanks for all the great videos. Where do you buy those labels at for the wires?
i make them
Very interesting
what interested you
I work as a tech for ford and they began using 3 wire coils for a little while now and they always harped not to unplug a coil when the engine is running cause it’ll fry the coil, I think they even had a SSM over the issue, I’d expect it’d be the same for the smart coil as well? Don’t know for sure, just thought I’d throw that out there in cause anyone out there is trying to diagnose a misfire and try’s unplugging one, may kill it.
with a smart coil its looking for a state of discharge, they should not burn up being unplugged cause if the logic side of the coil doesnt have continuity to the charge side then it should discharge thru the ground path of the head. the 3 wire ford coils are different
So what was the issue killing coils ? The "questionable" grounds or the "questionable" relays ?
the grounding is what was killing the coils
