    I am a frequent acoustic live player and I have a lot of pupils I give guitar lessons. Here's what I think and experience: I am a real tone-freak and work a lot at my sound, I've tried lots of things like tube mics, Sennheiser 441, Small & large condensor mics, piezo-upgrade-pedals like the Fishmans, combinations of all kinds. I think the reverb pedal is very important (I use a Digitech with Lexicon reverbs) and a unnoticable amount of chorus MXR M134 (to make it sound wide) and the right EQ, to get rid of the annoying piezo high freqs' . Most of all beginner pupils do not even notice the difference between a single coil and a humbucker. The audience hear the songs, the singer, the groove and the ambience. As long that's okay I'm satisfied with my piezo-guitarsound drowned in a little beautiful amount off modulated reverb in stereo. It's a 'guitarist-thing' to hear the piezo. Don't emphasize the highs but make the mids sound beautiful. Don't strum to hard with a hard pick ( I use a 0.60mm dunlop) or use the fingers/nails and get a singer that sings very well. No problems with the piezo!!! Most people in the audience don't care about the guitar unfortunately.....

      I bought a Taylor that has the ES 2 system, while I would still agree that piezo's are a huge compromise, this system sounds good enough for me and I've had people comment on the great tone I'm getting. I wouldn't go as far as great but it certainly does the job.

      from what I've learnt, you just have to approach them differently. once you plug it in, this isn't really an acoustic guitar anymore. it requires different approach.

  • @duncanearley

    Sounds very nice. Side idea: I would love a BOSS pedal that allowed me to plug an acoustic guitar into an electric amp. I am in a cover band and most of the songs are rock and pop but some are acoustic an it would be nice to not have to take an extra amp or rely on the PA.

    • @KristonAbbott
      @KristonAbbott 7 років тому +1

      Duncan Earley hi mate, I know you said about not wanting to plug into the pa, but I have one of the boss acoustic simulator pedals that I plug an electric guitar into and then that goes into the pa, works well enough for covers in a noisy environment like a pub, then you can at least reduce your guitar carrying requirements? I also use it for an acoustic preamp to plug an acoustic guitar straight into the pa. it might not be exactly what you meant, but might help you. They come up reasonably cheap on flea bay most days. I think there is an AC-2 (old one) and an AC3 (new one), I've had the -2 for years and has done me good service. Good luck with your endeavours my friend.

    • @KristonAbbott
      @KristonAbbott 7 років тому +1

      Also, forgot to mention, it has 2 outputs, one for your electric guitar amp and a separate one for the effect out which you can run straight to the pa. then the pedal switches between the two outputs. If you only use 1 output, it switches both signals into the single amp.

    Thanks for the video. I can't get used to the way a piezo pickup destroys everything I like in the sound of a guitar.
    I do understand why people still want to use it onstage because the electric signal is very usable.
    But I can't use it, because every single time I hit a note it feels like somebody's kicking my butt.

    • @stateofblitz
      @stateofblitz 4 роки тому +2

      Yes the piezo destroys it and this pedal does close to sweet fa. I don't understand how some people think it's ok.
      Try 3 Sigma audio or a Hotone acoustic simulator pedal. They actually sound like an acoustic.

    • @swmorgan515
      @swmorgan515 6 років тому +8

      It's not a true "dry" sound because his acoustic electric already has a preamp built-in. A better test would have been a piezo pickup without a preamp in the chain, into the BOSS

    I have the regular Boss EQ pedal and just bought the pre-amp AD-2 pedal.
    At first, I only used the AD-2 pedal on my Fender Acoustasonic 90 amp and it actually cut back some of the wattage I felt. Initially, I was disappointed since I wanted the “power up” effect that the regular EQ pedal has to offer but then I decided to use both pedals at the same time to see what would happen.
    The results were very satisfying. I managed to once again have extra sound power with the regular EQ pedal and restore the acoustic resonance with the AD-2 pedal. Basically, I’m using the regular EQ pedal to boost power while using the AD-2 pedal for that crisp acoustic sound. I’m using an active EMG pick up.

    Hmmmm. I like the idea of the ambience control - ie. reverb - but the lack of any eq, even a basic 'tone' knob is an issue for me. Also I don't see the need for it to be housed in a standard Boss stompbox.

  • @JohannesLabusch
    @JohannesLabusch 6 років тому +6

    Sounds to me like "ambience" does what any reverb pedal set on "room" would do, and "acoustic resonance" does what any EQ pedal would do if you basically push the high frequencies. Obviously, none of these changes affect the basic problem: piezo pickups, the worst invention since plastic guitar backs. Look, it's a bit of a hassle to deal with microphones, but singers have to live with them, they don't implant microchips into their vocal cords and claim it sounds natural. Listen to live footage from the 70s involving acoustic guitars. It sounds good. No microphone-no air. No resonance. I appreciate the way this player hits short notes, that way you can hear that piezo quack very clearly. Even with new strings and lovely playing, the guitar is is not "breathing". No stomp box can bring that wood back to life.

    • @huynhngocnamgiang
      @huynhngocnamgiang 3 роки тому

      Very well said. Check out acoustic rigs from players like Mike Dawes or Petteri Sariola from the fingetstyle world, who solved the problem beautifully with the replacement of piezo pickups by magnetic and transducer ones.

    • @JohannesLabusch
      @JohannesLabusch 3 роки тому +1

      @@huynhngocnamgiang Thanks. I've been on the anti piezo beat for years, but sometimes it seems like people literally don't hear the difference ...

    • @huynhngocnamgiang
      @huynhngocnamgiang 3 роки тому +1

      @@JohannesLabusch uh! Ikr? My highschool band always use piezo pickups and I don't know how the audience feel but to me it sounds like something punching into your ears. It's so horrible that using piezo itself is a sacrilegious act. Now I use a combo combination of transducers and mic (k&k trinity) and a magnetic pickup.
      However, if you want a fuller picture, this is what I've learned after 3 years being a "non-piezo user": there're several reasons why piezo is still popular. First is it's pretty cheap and easy to find. Second is the feedback control is awesome to compare with other system like mic or even transducer (you have to learn to live with feedback using a mic/trans). And thirdly, the tone. Piezo sounds horrible itself if plugged straight to the PA, but with a good amp designed for acoustic guitar, it may sounds pretty decent (like acus or aer amps, but they are generally pretty expensive).
      Here's another thing to consider, the opposite of piezo is not really the answer either. I used to think the closest a pickup system to capture the natural sound of the guitar, the better, thats why I had high hope on systems like K&K trinity because it has a mic and a transducer, you cannot have a more "wooden tone" than that, right? Well, in fact after using it for a while I still feel something lacking. It somehow sounds too..."warm", too "woody" and really dies out in the band mix. Think about it, a studio-tier quality sound does not also need great mics (or pickups in this situation), but also a great treated room. And that's why the result of my k&k trinity system although still sounds way better than a mere piezo, it catches too much "air" in the guitar body and therefore not "punchy", not "cold" enough. I think that's why people BLEND the mic or transducer with another "cold" pickup like piezo or magnetic. For example, Tommy Emmanuel's system is a combination of both mic and a piezo plugged into a AER compact 60 amp. Or my personal favorite set up, Petteri Sariola's magnetic combined with several transducers (this system is particularly popular in Asia tho). In short, "cold" pickups like piezo or magnetic sound terrible itself, but if you blend in some warmness of mics or transducers it can sounds very great, with the advantage of better controlled feedback too.
      Hope it helps!

      Andertons Music Co I think you should make a video that's about "How to enhance the Acoustic Piezo Sound" where you compare the line out of one acoustic or a few different guitars and run it straight into the interface, than into this pedal, the bodyrez, or the TC Mimiq Doubler, and so on. If I remember correctly, Takamine has these tube preamps, don't know if you stock these. And I'm sure there are more devices I don't know about that could do a job.
      I think that video would be interesting for all Acoustic Paradiso viewers, because you see under every video of that series comments like "The piezo sound is so much worse than the mic'd signal"

    Hard to tell how good that pedal is with a crappy sounding acoustic. All you hear is that under saddle snap which I hate. Guessing an eq is a better option.

    When I plug my effects through my loop station and bypass my amplifier and go directly into the PA. My distortion pedals sound like crap. I'm thinking of getting a preamp to help my distortion sound through the PA directly

    • @BobJones-bh9qz
      @BobJones-bh9qz 4 роки тому

      Well you definitely don’t want an acoustic preamp, I would suggest getting an “amp in a box” type pedal, preferably with some adjustable eq

    I'm not that fond of acoustics sound-wise, especially plugged in. I don't even play guitar. I still watched this simply because Danish Pete could make a tennis racket sound sexy.

    • @JohannesLabusch

      It's a narrow filter that is aimed at combatting feedback.

    • @tomedwards81
      @tomedwards81 3 роки тому +1

      1. Ambience is reverb. 2. Acoustic resonance restores the acoustic sound that is lost by a piezo pickup. 3. Notch filters out feedback onstage. 4. The preamp boosts a signal from a passive pickup.

    • @simonlees2848
      @simonlees2848 7 років тому

      Cameron Naim Line out is the same as running out of a DI except it's using a stereo connector (trs) rather then a mic connector probably to save space

    • @napalmhardcore
      @napalmhardcore 7 років тому

      You send the line out to a mixer/interface. The other output I would presume goes to an acoustic guitar amplifier.

    Why is it that acoustic guitar pickups always seem to have that odd farty sound to them, especially on lower notes and chords? I don't know enough about how guitar pickups work to figure that out and it always bothers me when the otherwise wonderful sound on a guitar is tarnished by it.

    • @dakevster
      @dakevster 7 років тому +1

      GuyNamedSean that's just the way they sound. acoustic pickups aren't meant to recreate the guitar's natural unplugged sound. they have thier own signature sound. if you want it to sound the same then you need a mic.

    • @BridoTube
      @BridoTube 7 років тому +2

      Most of the time, an acoustic pickup is just a piezo strip just under the saddle of the guittar. The main benefit of this kind of pickup is that it's not really prone to feedback, and it is also quite cheap to produce. But as you say, most of the time, it just doesn't sound good, or "realistic". It requires a good onboard preamp to transform it's sound, or an external pedal / preamp. The higher end guitars usually have systems with a piezo pickup + an internal microphone, and an onboard preamp which lets you mix both together. You should listen to Tommy Emmanuel's guitar, it's a custom Maton guitar but he always gets his sound right, with a piezo and a microphone I believe (he doesn't use an external mic on stage).

      @robbolandsvids 7 років тому +1

      I find that turning the volume down on the guitar and boosting it on the amp instead, can help a lot in terms of getting rid of that farty plastic sound and making the thing sound more like an acoustic.
