- Welcome to today's video, where you saw the renovation of a cast iron grain mill with a tiller, which is marked M.F.E.
The history of the grain mill is connected with the development of agriculture and grain processing. Already in prehistoric times, a slightly sunken stone and a small manual crusher were used to crush grain. This primitive equipment was later replaced by manual rotary mills, so-called grist mills. Hand grinders were powered by human power, a person had to turn the rammer with a new wheel that provided grinding between the holding plates. This process required physical strength and endurance.
Manual threshers were also an important tool for agricultural communities, people also gathered at the thresher to process grain together and stockpile animal feed.
This activity not only provided food for farm animals but also strengthened the community spirit and created an opportunity to meet and share information.
Over time, grain processing technology has evolved and manual mills have been replaced by more modern and efficient ones, but there are still a number of companies that manufacture cast iron mills today.
However, the history of manual threshers reminds us of the importance of grain processing in the past. And how people relied on their physical strength and traditional technologies to get food.

I restored a similar one, found at my wife's parent's house in France. It had been used as a flowerpot, and the adjuster wheel was smashed. It wasn't a great resto, but good enough to mount and display in the garden. Videos like your gave me hope, and taught me some useful skills.

Yes, I'm sorry. I noticed it only after showing the video caption, I must have duplicated me. As for the lead test, the swab is activated by water, so it cannot disturb the color.

Another wonderful renovation! And a great background of the history how people ground grain to make food. One day you will revisit this video and replace the plate that is missing from the grinder. I was thinking that I remembered those things having two plates, glad you caught that
He caught it, but it wasn't until I put the mill back together, I was constantly focusing on the auger what was inside, that I didn't realize that 1/2 of the grinding plate was missing. The mill will be displayed on a shelf in the museum, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Another brilliant restoration Radek and Veronika, well done. The result is another usable device for grinding your own seeds to make flour. I've never ground my own flour but I used to bake bread twice a week for the whole family - I'd love to start that again, it tasted so much better than the bread available in supermarkets. I admire your welding skill! Sixty years ago I had to braise the cracked radiator base on an old tractor, and it took many steps, with cooling in a hot tub of sand for a day after. The welders we had were stick types.
About 80% of cast iron can be welded in this way, if there is more carbon in it, the weld does not hold.
@@VeradonaRestoration That was the concern with the radiator base, that there would be a hole left to leak. The brazing has lasted all these years. I used a carbon arc to heat the iron, then melted and flowed the brass in the crack while still hot. Great work.

I like your channel a lot. But here's
a criticism: You used to make much more detailed restoration in the earlier videos. Example: Food grade inside paint, detailed delicate correction of casting faults, filling the holes on the metal with filler. It took longer for sure but with much more effort the better.
But one must admit that you are still one of the best restorators around. 👍👍

I think so. The grinder has the option of setting the coarseness of grinding, but unfortunately the grinder was incomplete, so I couldn't try it. Thanks for watching :)

En algunas partes de México, se sigue triturando el maíz para hacer la comida más rica.
Torturan el grano de maíz en "Metate". El "Metate" es una piedra volcánica y al triturar vegetales y granos de cereales, incorporan los minerales que tiene la piedra volcánica. 😊

nice job BUT I can not see it working without 2 grinding plates. The worm will push out the grain and fall right out. You do not have the 2nd plate is that why you did not show it working?
Loved the restoration. But a bit puzzled on two things. There was not a demonstration of how the grinder worked and Veronica’s side glance at the end. Made me feel like maybe something was bothering her at the end of the video?
We are glad that you liked our video. At the end, we could not do a grinding demonstration because the grinder was not complete. I didn't notice that 1/2 of the grinding mechanism was missing, so it couldn't have been a demo. Veronica was OK. Thanks for looking :)

Yes, I understand it. If the grinder were complete, a grinding demonstration would certainly be in order. Since it is not in my power to make the missing part of the grinding plate, the grinder will only serve as a decoration. I am sorry.
