  • Welcome to today's video, where you saw the renovation of a French ornate meat rotisserie.
Grilling is one of the very popular ways that has a rich history. Grilling dates back to prehistoric times. The first evidence of barbecuing dates back to the Stone Age, when simple grates made of stones were used.
For a long time, food was prepared only on fire. The design and mechanism of watch spit jacks was introduced around the 19th century. They consisted of various components, many of which played a key role in their proper functioning.
A clock mechanism powered by a winding key drove a system of gears and pulleys that ultimately turned the spit.
The rotation speed was set using different gear ratios, which made it possible to control the baking process.
These devices were commonly found in kitchens and fireplaces where they were used to roast various types of meat.
Automation of the turning process reduced the need for constant manual work.
Their introduction brought a better taste and consistency of the meat.
In addition to their practical function, antique clockwork spit jacks had artistic value.
These small devices often featured intricately carved decorative elements and ornate designs that showcased the craftsmanship of the time. Their ingenious mechanism and artistic workmanship deserve to be preserved and admired.
And that's all for today's video.

Was racking my brain trying to figure out what this device was. With all the decades I've spent cooking meals over an open fire, I should have known better. This was a magical transformation on a very special spit. Very ingenious machine requiring no electrical cord or batteries. Thank you for a fantastic video and thank Veronika for a wonderful description. Have a Blessed week!

I don’t speak or write your language so I always hope my meaning is not lost in translation. I love the way your videos start out: a mystery of devices and parts that as the restoration proceeds the meaning and purpose of the project comes to light. At the end I am always “Oh so thats what it’s for!” That and the historical narrative at the end always makes your restorations enjoyable to watch. Thank you and greetings from America.

The masterful use of materials to refurbish broken items is exactly what I expected from you. Thank you both for another entertaining and informative video.

I was a Navy photographer in the mid 70s. In camera repair school they had a 16mm movie camera with a wind-up spring. If you failed to run the camera until the spring fully unwound you'd fail the course. The spring had the power when wound up to punch a hole in a metal waste basket. Lots of people failed out of that course. Seeing that spring brought back memories.

Loved the reproduction of the label!
That piece of steel that you welded to the crank seemed to be older than the actual device...with all that pitting and the aged grip it fits perfectly!
Encouraged by your work I kind of "restored" an 50s or 60s coffee grinder some time back, wasn't that far gone at all, just needed some cleaning and removing a nasty white paint in the bean compartment, probably covered in lead paint...cost me 13€ at the flea market and runs like a charm!
    Thx for the inspiration!

Ano je to dost zajímavá a praktická hračka pro grilování bez baterií či elektřiny :) Díky Honzo

Thank you Debra. As for grilling, yes, it's a great thing, but there's nothing better than turning your own fork with a skewer over the fire, such a weekend early evening relaxing with the family :) Have a nice day :)

Admiro tu trabajo, te felicito. Restaurar y armar es un arte. Yo desarmo algo así y termino armando cualquier cosa😂. Es un puzzle. Saludos desde Uruguay 🇺🇾
