      I mean, while they didn't want to give it back, they had taken it from where it was left and was kept relatively safe. In their mind other people were trying to steal something that they had found since it's finder's keepers, but it's still a screwed up situation since the original owners knew they had it and were actively looking for it.

      @@jayjaybob2keeping something that you found isn't really robbery, but actively keeping it after the owner asked you for it does get into that zone. It's similar to finding $100 on the street. Yeah...the lady absolutely knew the cash was gone. The point of confidently returning it while saying it's all still there is it's virtually impossible to prove they took the cash. With physical objects the police could be called and if the object is found in their home it would prove theft. Cash, even if the cops were called and they found the exact amount of cash missing from the purse in their home, there would be no way of knowing they didn't already have that cash. Unless Yvonne was recording like the serial number on each bill.
      So from the woman's perspective, there's nothing incriminating, and if Linus and Yvonne press them about the missing money then they'd actually be more in the right to have the cops remove Linus and Yvonne from their property.

      Often the desk workers help themselves. A Dutch consumer programme tested several police forces and municipalities (only the latter is formally tasked with lost and found) by "finding" wallets they prepared with a known amount of cash, picked them up a few days later. So the only middleman would be the organisation they left it with. IIRC, most (little over half) of the wallets had cash stolen out. That's the police and government workers for you.

      @@guard13007 Agreed. My wallet once fell out of my pocket as I got in my car. It was the middle of the night at a laundromat. So my wallet lay there on the ground as I drove off. I made it to a gas station 10 minutes away, couldn't pay, and immediately rushed back, expecting the wallet to be gone. And it was gone. But there was a gentleman standing around next to his car, just having a look around, so I asked him if he saw my wallet. He grabbed it from the hood of his car and handed it back and said he was gonna wait another hour before bringing it to the police, in case I came back. I paid for his laundry in turn. And it's not the first time I was saved by kind strangers. One time, I stupidly left my car keys IN THE DOOR of my car. When I realized, hours later, I came back and the key was gone. In its place was a nice note letting me know a kind stranger had given the key to a nearby barbershop owner for safekeeping and that I could get it back from him. And I got help starting my car more than once when I was struggling.
      Maybe it varies country by country and Germany may just be a country where solidarity and compassion are more important than wherever the OP is from.

    Fun fact: When your 2-factor comes up after you login, you can scroll down and select "Find My Device" option. Not sure if it will let you ping anything, but if you just need to check the last known location it is helpful when you dont have any other device.

      Also from what I've heard, Google's tracker network didn't already exist because of Apple dragging their feet on implementing the anti-stalking features for it (so that people could not use google's tracker to stalk Apple users, in the same way people were using airtags to stalk people when they first came out). Based on various leaks and FCC filings, it looks like trackers and this network have basically been waiting to release for over a year.

    I lost my wallet at the hospital (from an anxiety attack of all things) and couldn’t get it back, I was pretty upset, losing my credit cards and ID birch costed me enough to replace that it frustrate me along with losing the wallet itself, which wasn’t cheap.
    Of course, after the anxiety attack, my paranoia kicked in and I now have a wallet with an AirTag and have gone to Apple (iPhone 12mini and Watch) despite picking on apple owners that I knew and now that I have one, I’m eating my words lol

    A common thing is to take unidentifiable valuables (so basically just cash) first and then just leave it there while it cools down. They do this for the exact situation you ran into where if they get caught they can hand it back and even if you went to the authorities there would be nothing the cops can do. However if they took the cards or tech, jewelry etc, the cops would be able to identify the stolen good and they get in trouble. They knew that everything was in it because they didn't take anything out of it, yet.
    Its the same shit as thefts hiding stolen goods in abandoned lots for a few days to weeks.

    Galaxy SmartTag has been a thing for a long time now. They are apparently equal in tests to airtags. Same concept but only pings off Samsung Galaxy phones with smartthings enabled. Also TILE is another brand thats been doing this for years but they don't ping off people's phones and suck.

    • @OmairArif
      @OmairArif 17 днів тому

      Tile does ping off people's phones. The problem is the phone needs the Tile app installed to be part of the network, so it's only useful if there are other Tile users near your tag. Which of course there usually isn't since the vast majority of people don't use Tile. However Tile is going to start using Google's network in new trackers.

    Do trackers like tile or airtags make you register them before they can track locations?
