    About 4 years ago, Deb bought me a trichocereus grandiflores hybrid. We had a heavy rain one day and it didn't like it!! Rotted quickly!! But left behind a large fruit like the ones you showed. I set it aside on a pot that had soil in it and forgot about it. One day I noticed that the pot had about 7 seedlings growing in it!! Started all by them selves!! They are now about 4 inches tall at the tallest!! I've also spread seeds around the mother plants like you did and sometimes I'm very surprised!! Congrats on your sons photo!!!Thanks for sharing this great video Ana!!! From Morris Park in the Ozarks, have a wonderful week ahead!!! Peace, Love, Plants!!! ✌💖🌵🌺🌿🌻🪴🌹🏵🌳🌷🌴😃👍

    Awesome video, Ana 😊 It can certainly be a time consuming job harvesting cactus seeds, I prefer the ones that come out dry and go straight into a bag too 😂 Many congratulations to your son for taking such an awesome photograph as well 😃 Thank you for sharing with us as always, Ana. First, Ana, congratulations to your son on his second place prize for his photo. Second, I wanted to share a story that came to mind when you spoke of the birds getting your cactus fruit. I have an Echinopsis/Trichocereus that has been forming a large fruit for months and I was patiently waiting for it to ripen so that I could harvest the seeds. It was changing to a nice yellow and I would check it every morning to see if it had started to split. A couple of days ago I came out to check my cactus and the fruit was gone! I looked all over the ground, under the plant stand and in the surrounding pots, but there was no sign of it. I started to widen my search when I happened to look over at my one year old goldendoodle puppy. She was clearly holding something in her mouth. You guessed it. It was the cactus fruit! She led me on a wild chase around the yard before I was able to convince her that a bouncing tennis ball was more interesting and she dropped the cactus fruit to grab the ball. (This took multiple attempts on my part and lots if pretending that the cactus fruit was much less important than the tennis ball.) In the end I was successful and the cactus fruit with most of it's seeds was still intact!
    I strained and cleaned the seeds according to your instructions and have sown them in pots in my house and am now awaiting germination (hopefully)!
    Thanks for your wonderful and instructive videos. They are such a help!

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 роки тому +1

      Oh my goodness! Your story is hilarious. Cactus fruit or tennis ball? Food or play. Tough decision! 🤣🐕🐶 Good luck on the seeds that you sowed. I hope you grow many new Trichocereus seedlings.

      Ana, I'm so excited! I planted the seeds from this adventure and already I must have nearly 100 tiny seedlings after only a week! One pot has some white fungus in it, despite having sterilized the soil by microwaving and washed and sterilized the pot with alcohol. Two pots, treated exactly the same, planted at the same time. Suggestions on what to do about the white fluffy mold/fungus?

    • @lisaschaefer155
      @lisaschaefer155 2 роки тому

      Another question for you. I purchased commercial cactus seed--saguaro and cactus mix. I sewed them according to your instructions and placed them in plastic bags. They sprouted and produced lots of seedings. I checked them again this morning and they had ALL disappeared! No small dying plants or even signs of dead plants. Help! I'd like to try again, but get different results. Any suggestions?

  • @newmanmansell760
    @newmanmansell760 2 роки тому +1

    This was very interesting to watch😆🙏💞Your cacti are tough getting through that heat👏When you sow do you bother with sterilization?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, I sterilize my soil in the microwave. 😊😊🌵🌵

  • @bhumphries1360

    I've found, in my short experience as a grower (about a year and a half), that microwaving your plant soil before sowing seeds kills off anything bad in the soil. So far, I've had zero fungus or bacterial issues. Also, sanitize absolutely everything with 90% isopropyl alcohol prior to use.

    • @thedreamcatcher5856
      @thedreamcatcher5856 2 роки тому +2

      microwave the soil at the lowest setting of your microwave. Heat the soil to above 70C but below 100C. This temperature range kills the bad guys and keeps the good things in the soil ;)

    I just picked some cactus fruits similar to those pink ones that look kinda like peppers and the seeds are yellow in coloration instead of black. Did I pick them too soon? I've got 2 fruits and I've only cut open one of them, should I leave the other one alone and let it mature?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  2 роки тому +1

      The seeds are not all black. Some cactus fruits have yellow/brown color of seeds. As long as the fruit is ripe, it should be fine. A fruit that is unripe will have light colored seeds.

    I had no idea there were so many tipes of cactus fruits.
    Can you please tell me how the pepper-shaped ones taste? They look kinda juicy. Are they even edible?
    Wait... So... If i were to buy a cactus fruit right now from any store, the one with the white pulp and many seeds, i coulr actually plant the many seeds and possibly get myself a cactus like that?

    • @CactusCaffeine

      I did not taste this pepper shaped fruit. And yes, those cactus fruits in the grocery, you can clean the seeds and plant them. 😊 You can check my How to Grow Cactus Seeds video for guidance. 😊
