The instructions that came with the "Liberator" told the user to use it to sneakily kill a nazi officer and take their firearm. I don't think it went into detail but I recommend sneaking up from behind and taking one shot behind the ear.

The gun came with instructions when airdropped in Europe, it showed how to load and fire it, along with how to sneak up behind a unsuspecting German Guard, place it under their helmet behind the ear and fire.
The liberator wasn’t used for “defending” as such. It was to be used to sneak up to Nazis, shoot them at very close range, then take their weapon to use to properly rebel against them in basically guerrilla warfare

The whole point of this pistol was to sneak up on a german soldier, shoot him in the back, and take his K98 or MP40. Wasn't meant to be used more then once
they were issued with 10 rounds (If I remember correctly) of 45 and a stick (to be used as a ejector) kind of optimistic of the SOE to think a partisan might get to reload it. :P
came here to say this. Yes it came with more rounds to be used IF NEEDED, but the idea was basically: "Use this to get something better"

@@_playa_ you mean the spoon. And no they wouldn't if they pulled the pin. Here's how a grenade works. You have the safety pin holding the spoon in place which is spring loaded. When you pull the pin, you hold the spoon down in place. When you throw it the spoon springs outwards striking a detonator and then falls off. You have typically about 5 seconds before it detonates. So, they could throw a live grenade with the pin in and it most likely would not detonate, but not with the safety pin removed.

Believe it or not, I've always wanted a Liberator gun. I collect strange and unusual weapons, and absolutely love collecting anything that is classified as an AOW. The Liberator was the least expensive firearm ever made, it cost right at $1 (in WWII that was a good hourly wage) and held several extra cartridges in the grip. They were dropped by the millions into occupied Europe, the idea being to sneak up behind an enemy soldier, pop him in the head, take his weapon then give the Liberator to a buddy so he could do the same thing. It was made of stamped and spot welded metal, and there was no rifling hence the less than stellar accuracy. The lack of rifling earns it the classification as an AOW by the National Firearms Act of 1934. Kudos to Edward for letting you shoot it, that's a rare and valuable piece.
If you're interested, I'm fairly local to you, I have two original in the factory box Military Armament Corporation SSSW's (Single Shot Survival Weapon), or as it's more commonly known the MAC Stinger. One has been fired, so you can shoot that one. I can bring some interesting & rare NFA stuff out. Most can be fired, one or two are rare enough that I don't want to risk damaging them by shooting them.

The liberator was never actually dropped, in the end the allied brass found it too risky. They did manufacture approximately 1M complete kits, with 10 45ACP rounds, a wooden pokey stick to remove the spent shell case, and a nice waxed paper storage box, but in the end they ended up dumping almost all of them into the sea. They were smoothbore BTW, cutting rifling was deemed too costly, and the liberator was primarily intended to be used by a civilian or resistance fighter as a contact/super close range weapon to overwhelm/threaten or kill an axis soldier and take their (much better) gun.

Its so inaccurate because that barrel has no rifling, the bullet tumbles as soon as it exits the barrel , it was made as a point blank weapon, essentially the gun you use to get a better gun
Sadly they were never really used and dropped in very low numbers, the vast majority of the originals are at the bottom of the ocean rotting away

I'm told that an original(I think some company makes repros???) liberator has the tendency of coming apart at the seams from the heat of being fired multiple times and the fact that there's no practical mechanism to absorb the recoil. Once the seams came back together it would pinch the crap out of the shooters hand.
