EXPOSING The "Controversial" Celtics Defense On Steph Curry

  • And it seems that Lebron himself agrees after witnessing this epic game from Curry.
But is this all Boston’s fault and punishment for their bad defensive strategy?
Let me explain. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
What do you think, Is this bad defense? Smart is pressuring him at the half court line, the dubs screen and now Tatum switches on Steph at the logo. Jayson is literally guarding him right here because he doesn’t want to give up a logo three pointer. WHAT?!
Another screen, and as Tatum is trying to recover, Horford is as high up as he’s been for the entire series. Hand is up, trying to contest a shot from 35 feet out. And it still goes in.
So was it because of bad defense? Absolutely not. This is as good as you can play him.
If Horford takes just one more step out, Curry would have easily blown by him and this is a 3 on 2 situation at the basket with both guys cutting.
So, would you rather give up a shot at the rim or a contested 35 footer?
Here is a similar situation. Another high screen, and Brown tries to get back to Curry, while Horford is way out here trying to contain Steph. But watch the jab here that sends big Al back and then the stepback from the finals logo. Nothing but the bottom of the net.
With both of these shots as funny as it is to say it but the Celtics have Curry right where they want him. Taking contested shots literally from half court. And he still makes them.
It’s pick your poison from these shots, to this. The angle is a bit bad for breakdown but you see that as soon as he passes half court, Smart picks him up and Wiggins comes up for a pick again, and Horford is much higher here. But this time Curry rejects the screen and surprises everyone, so then Al has no chance whatsoever as Steph turns on the jets and speeds by the big man for an easy layup. Do you see now the easy bucket that you give up by doing this?
And it happens again on this play. Look at how easy he gets to the paint, and this could be an uncontested floater, the lob to Looney, which admittedly is a bit risky, or what he opts for- the kick out to Payton. But the trick is that a soon as the attention is shifted there he does his patented relocation sprint, and this is his signature move for getting open threes and of course this is a swish.
It happened against the much more athletic Williams as well. Curry shakes and bakes, and this time it’s that floater that I mentioned and he drops it in.
At this point you may be saying: Well just blitz him, take the ball away from him early at any cost. And Boston tried that as well.
In transition you can see Steph trying to hunt Williams but both Brown and Tatum chase him out of sheer desperation to not leave Rob on him, and they don’t even look at other players.
So in this situation, with 2 guys on him he simply bounces it to Klay Thompson and this is a practice shot for Klay in rhythm…bang.
And late in the game as well the blitz is high up but Steph lobs it to Green and this is literally the play that Golden State won their 3 championships. Draymond and a second guy playing 2 on 1 at the rim off of Curry’s double teams.
So he flips it to Looney inside and the finish.
So let’s go back to the drop coverage that’s been heavily criticized for Boston.
Williams probably should have had his hand up here, but as we stop it here this is still a tremendously difficult shot by Curry, with White all over him, and this is a successful defensive strategy against literally any other player in the league. This is good defense and you want the opposing players to take shots like these, I mean this is with a hand in his face here. And It didn’t matter.
So as we all have criticized Boston, including myself admittedly- we have to stop and think about what’s the best option for defending Steph. And honestly this is it.
    You always hear analysts say
Well the Celtics are doing just that, playing the percentages and hoping for the best. If Steph Curry can’t sustain this blistering hot pace he’s been on so far, with no help from his teammates, the Celtics will win the championship, but this is the greatest shooter of all time, so he could decide to have 2 more of these games, and we all know what happens if he pulls that off.

my coach always said "if defense is a 10 and offense is a 10, offense will always win". you can defend curry in the best way possible, but if he (like any other great player in history) enters god mode and decide to win it, he will do it, no matter how hard you try. if the best shooter in history drops a 40 bomb on you with great defense, you just say gg and prepare the next one... the problem of bostom yesterday was on the other end of the floor.

Steph curry is a much better comparison to Michael Jordan, than LeBron James. As time goes on people will realize this.
The reason is because MJ is the only other player in NBA history that had his own set of "rules" and teams played him differently.
The same thing applies to Steph curry. He might have had an even bigger impact on how OTHER TEAMS construct their rosters than any other player in NBA history.
Just look at the rockets and what they did with the 3 point experiment. Do you think that a team would have played 5 guards and no big if steph curry wouldn't have changed the game?

That is simply not true all the time. Amazing shooter, yes, outstanding shooter, yet, but just don't say anything and expect me to believe it and I've watched Curry play numerous times. He gets doubled 'a lot' but hardly all the time. Facts, not hyperbole. Personally there were many times in this series where Curry was wide open as unbelievable as that is and when he shot in those wide open times, he usually made the which is what one would expect of someone like Curry. It's almost like you're surprised when he misses but the truth is even as great as he is he still missed ALL of his 3s in game 5 which just proves what we all know to be true, no one is perfect. Finally, yes he's the greatest shooter, but I get tired of the limited debates about best shooters, rebounders, passers, etc. I prefer ones where people discuss the greatest 'all around' player(s).

But against this defense, they cant do that, klay isn’t really known as a shot creator. And draymond is no way near to be as good as a facilitator they kake him seem to be without curry’s gravity pulling other opposing players towards him. I always recommend teams that in order to gain more space...go more vertical as it's more space towards halfcourt than the corners. You want to stretch the defenses out, especially when you have a shooters like Curry and Lillard that can really stretch the floor out vertically. You want to really utilize them to do so. Defenses will either also stretch their defenses out vertically or keep it compacted within the paint because the three is the less efficient than the two.

Awe, I'm ready this properly now. The wording is a bit funny
How this is meant to be read is "the offense should stretch the defense as far as possible
Because there's more space at even just the half length length of the court when compared to the sides. Because of that, it's better for the offense to stretch the defense vertically rather than horizontally
However, if the offense can't hit 3s at an efficient rate, then the defense gets to be more compact and save more energy by just having to defend the 2
On the flip side, if the offense can hit 3s, at an efficient rate, from further out. Well then, that just becomes a nightmare to properly defend"

Bruh I don't get the why Klay always needs to get a pass. He played better in game 4 but still not "great"

Amazing breakdown what else you got

  • @spicyxiomai9335
    @spicyxiomai9335 Рік тому +1

The primary reason behind the drop coverage for the bigs, is less about about giving the "difficult" shot to Curry, but more about keeping everyone else in check + having a better chance to contest a rebound.
Warriors are a well oiled team. Steph is a generational talent. There will always be a form of punishment however you defend a pick.
Hedging Curry would be giving the keys to their engine, unlocking Draymond Green's passing, and in turn also open up everyone's game.
Switching would've meant more rebounding disadvantage, not to mention Curry would probably still have cooked the bigman guarding him anyways.
Drop coverage invites the greatest shooter ever to shoot an open jumper, but it does allow them to avoid those defensive rotations the Warriors are known to breakdown, and keeps the bigman low enough to be able grab a rebound. It essentially forces a Curry vs Celtics game
It may not be the best solution to guard Steph, but considering they want to prioritize rebounding as well as defend everyone else, its as optimal as it gets.

a not so welcome criticism here in the comments:
the new style of your presentation is more complex, yes ... and I am sure the built up was expensive too. but still, the way before was more epic and stylish = just your face and the red and blue lights.

They giving curry way too much space and at the top of the key. He’s able to step into those shots as well. These are like practice shots for him, and he makes 90% in practice. Either switch and live with the 1on1 or keep Robert Williams in the paint and blitz curry on the screen. Make a gsw player score in the paint over Williams. But you can’t keep giving curry open threes like this. Last I checked 3s > 2s.
