EXPOSING The "Controversial" Celtics Defense On Steph Curry

- And it seems that Lebron himself agrees after witnessing this epic game from Curry.
But is this all Boston’s fault and punishment for their bad defensive strategy?
Let me explain. What up everybody, my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
What do you think, Is this bad defense? Smart is pressuring him at the half court line, the dubs screen and now Tatum switches on Steph at the logo. Jayson is literally guarding him right here because he doesn’t want to give up a logo three pointer. WHAT?!
Another screen, and as Tatum is trying to recover, Horford is as high up as he’s been for the entire series. Hand is up, trying to contest a shot from 35 feet out. And it still goes in.
So was it because of bad defense? Absolutely not. This is as good as you can play him.
If Horford takes just one more step out, Curry would have easily blown by him and this is a 3 on 2 situation at the basket with both guys cutting.
So, would you rather give up a shot at the rim or a contested 35 footer?
Here is a similar situation. Another high screen, and Brown tries to get back to Curry, while Horford is way out here trying to contain Steph. But watch the jab here that sends big Al back and then the stepback from the finals logo. Nothing but the bottom of the net.
With both of these shots as funny as it is to say it but the Celtics have Curry right where they want him. Taking contested shots literally from half court. And he still makes them.
It’s pick your poison from these shots, to this. The angle is a bit bad for breakdown but you see that as soon as he passes half court, Smart picks him up and Wiggins comes up for a pick again, and Horford is much higher here. But this time Curry rejects the screen and surprises everyone, so then Al has no chance whatsoever as Steph turns on the jets and speeds by the big man for an easy layup. Do you see now the easy bucket that you give up by doing this?
And it happens again on this play. Look at how easy he gets to the paint, and this could be an uncontested floater, the lob to Looney, which admittedly is a bit risky, or what he opts for- the kick out to Payton. But the trick is that a soon as the attention is shifted there he does his patented relocation sprint, and this is his signature move for getting open threes and of course this is a swish.
It happened against the much more athletic Williams as well. Curry shakes and bakes, and this time it’s that floater that I mentioned and he drops it in.
At this point you may be saying: Well just blitz him, take the ball away from him early at any cost. And Boston tried that as well.
In transition you can see Steph trying to hunt Williams but both Brown and Tatum chase him out of sheer desperation to not leave Rob on him, and they don’t even look at other players.
So in this situation, with 2 guys on him he simply bounces it to Klay Thompson and this is a practice shot for Klay in rhythm…bang.
And late in the game as well the blitz is high up but Steph lobs it to Green and this is literally the play that Golden State won their 3 championships. Draymond and a second guy playing 2 on 1 at the rim off of Curry’s double teams.
So he flips it to Looney inside and the finish.
So let’s go back to the drop coverage that’s been heavily criticized for Boston.
Williams probably should have had his hand up here, but as we stop it here this is still a tremendously difficult shot by Curry, with White all over him, and this is a successful defensive strategy against literally any other player in the league. This is good defense and you want the opposing players to take shots like these, I mean this is with a hand in his face here. And It didn’t matter.
So as we all have criticized Boston, including myself admittedly- we have to stop and think about what’s the best option for defending Steph. And honestly this is it.
You always hear analysts say
Well the Celtics are doing just that, playing the percentages and hoping for the best. If Steph Curry can’t sustain this blistering hot pace he’s been on so far, with no help from his teammates, the Celtics will win the championship, but this is the greatest shooter of all time, so he could decide to have 2 more of these games, and we all know what happens if he pulls that off.

my coach always said "if defense is a 10 and offense is a 10, offense will always win". you can defend curry in the best way possible, but if he (like any other great player in history) enters god mode and decide to win it, he will do it, no matter how hard you try. if the best shooter in history drops a 40 bomb on you with great defense, you just say gg and prepare the next one... the problem of bostom yesterday was on the other end of the floor.
They need to double team him... That way the defense is 11 and the offense is 10

LeBron said you need to start guarding Curry as soon as he parks his car in the parking lot. Boston waiting until he laces up, gets dressed, and walks on the court means they waited too long 🤣

Steph is playing the same level as MJ in 1996. He wants it bad. Nobody stopping him. If his teammates step up, GSW in 6. If not, then boston in 7
And D Wade 2006, dirk 2011 and lebron 2016 are performances from the same caliber too. Respect to all these legends
96 were the weakest performance of MJ in finals.
If I had to compare, it would be a mix of 93 and 98. 93 as it was the best finals performance of MJ and this is, at the moment, the best performance of Steph in finals. 98 as Curry have to carry his team the way MJ had to carry the Bulls (Pippen and Rodman didn't had great series as Klay and Draymond).
@@kabuliish2 yeah dude
@@ArtMagik No arguments here. Every year jordan was in the bulls was amazing. Maybe an exception for when he just returned from baseball but he was still great nonetheless
@@CGGGold I agree about that. It was just that I thought that you unwillingly diminished what Steph is doing right now by using the least impressive Jordan's finals.
As I said, I find, for the moment, Curry's 2022 finals being a mix between 1993 and 1998 Jordan's finals.
People really need to understand how great curry is. No player in nba history is guarded like he is. Unlike other stars, you can’t give him any space to even breathe a jumper or drive to the basket. The second he takes a dribble he gets doubled. That’s unbelievable
Steph curry is a much better comparison to Michael Jordan, than LeBron James. As time goes on people will realize this.
The reason is because MJ is the only other player in NBA history that had his own set of "rules" and teams played him differently.
The same thing applies to Steph curry. He might have had an even bigger impact on how OTHER TEAMS construct their rosters than any other player in NBA history.
Just look at the rockets and what they did with the 3 point experiment. Do you think that a team would have played 5 guards and no big if steph curry wouldn't have changed the game?
Great take. Imo It’s hard to argue against Steph being the GoAT if he wins the ring this yr, especially offensively.
@@NewWorldOrderFAIL Except that Jordan was also a defensive powerhouse. Curry being the greatest three point shooter of all time doesn't make him the GOAT.
@@MagCynic Yeah MJ was basically the Steph Curry of the midrange, and was the better defender and finisher, other than ball handling and 3 point shooting, MJ beats curry in literally every other aspect of basketball, and accomplished more with less help
That is simply not true all the time. Amazing shooter, yes, outstanding shooter, yet, but just don't say anything and expect me to believe it and I've watched Curry play numerous times. He gets doubled 'a lot' but hardly all the time. Facts, not hyperbole. Personally there were many times in this series where Curry was wide open as unbelievable as that is and when he shot in those wide open times, he usually made the which is what one would expect of someone like Curry. It's almost like you're surprised when he misses but the truth is even as great as he is he still missed ALL of his 3s in game 5 which just proves what we all know to be true, no one is perfect. Finally, yes he's the greatest shooter, but I get tired of the limited debates about best shooters, rebounders, passers, etc. I prefer ones where people discuss the greatest 'all around' player(s).
The most overlooked aspect of Curry's game has always been his ability to get to the rim. His handles and speed allow him to get past his defender and his motion, with picks and screens set up for him, gets him to spots in the paint if he takes them
Curry’s footwork and off ball movement is the most underrated aspect of him imo
@Jaded You should copy and paste this reply and make it it's own comment. This information is too good to be hidden in a reply
Jordan got to the line 9+ times frequently. He would attack the rim relentlessly. If MJ could play in this current ERA he would shape his game accordingly and become a reliable 3p shooter. His determination, focus and sheer will to be great would consume him.
Curry is GOAT Shooter overall and especially the GOAT 3P shooter
Just consider how competetive Kobe and MJ were and youll realize they were clutch.
But there bread and butter was the post
A lot of his great aspects are underrated and is not being mention much because he is not Nike. That is why they will always throw shades on him and won't even put him on top 10.
@@delab13 I agree 💯

Curry is the most influential offensive player since Jordan. It almost reminds me of Michael Vick, where you have to completely rewrite how to play defense just because he's in the game. Traditional rules don't apply to defending him, much like Vick.
Curry and Vick are my two favorite athletes of all time. Complete game changers!
"Difficult shot" for most players yes. For Curry? No. You need to put pressure on him. One year he shot 50+% from 30+ feet. I agree. I wish I can handle my balls just like him. ;)
They also afraid of a near logo 3 though

@@aidanklobuchar1798 yeah I saw his vid too. He had similar points
True. But Celtics still gotta mix it up. If they play drop coverage every single play, Warriors will exploit that too.
“Absolutely no help from his teammates” sounds absurd when you realize that Wiggins had 17 points and 16 boards.
he had 17 points but on poor efficiency. no one on stephs team is reliably knocking down shots and making plays. 16 boards was extremely valuable and wiggins has been the clear-cut second best warriors player in the finals.
Nah wiggins job is to be defending tatum. Klay and jp is the one they expect to make around 20 points to help curry.
Wiggins had +20, highest plus and minus on the team
Wiggins is the 3rd best player on the team and the 2nd best scoring option for Golden State in this series. But he lacks the aggression and the confidence he needs to REALLY help ease the pressure off of Steph on offense
Maple Jordan is doing a great job to me and he's my favorite player on the warriors, but between his talent and intelligence, he both could and should be doing a lot more to help the Warriors in this series. Otherwise, he'll be at risk of losing both of those ranks to a healthy Klay Thompson next year
Oh, and game 6 Klay is a real thing, warriors will be fine
and held tatum to 23 pts
I really appreciate breakdown videos like this because it shows how skilled these NBA players really are and it shows you how legendary and cerebral Steph is in real-time play.
When real Steph shoots better than NBA 2k Steph, you know you're in for a long night.
Actually nowadays players are way better than the 2k version of themselves, athletes are evolving so much that a video game can't keep up anymore. Unless you change the sliders. haha
Nah bro Curry be shooting 70% from 3 on 2k without sliders if you know how to play and have a good team around him,I’ve played seasons where bigs like Gianiss and Jokic have the best FG% in the history of the NBA,ain’t no way any NBA player reaching their 2k versions
I thought it was a boring game that the Warriors were just lucky, but you showed how skilled Curry was in this game. Even with solid defense, Curry can still score. Assists aren't needed if Curry does this. This is championship Warriors.
That’s why I call him GOAT. Nobody command the defense that Steph got, nobody including Micheal, Kobe, Lebron, Bird, Magic….That’s why with KD it’s too all easy for KD. Imagine Steph get Wiseman. I watched BB since the 80’s and he’s truly one of a kind! And he’s only 6’2”!
celtics' defense is all about hacking curry, smart has been hand checking him, they were pushing him from behind, interfere and falling at curry's landing spot, all with little to no call.
hacking curry ? he barely plays curry since he is screened off him every play lol
they have to fire the refrees, they missed so many fouls and travels by celtics. They're just not suited for the job.
They’re doing the exact job the league tasked them with. If you watched any Celtics games this playoffs you know they get the best whistle you’ve ever seen
Like the other guy said, they’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to. The Nets just got outplayed but if you go watch the Heat series you’ll see how many fouls the refs were “missing” to give the Celtics the advantage. And it’s even worse this series. It’s crazy how the league just allows this to happen when even the casual fan can spot it.
But they are paid to do so.

Top tier content and analysis, as always dude
The only thing that scares me is that Steph is playing great while the team around is inconsistent. Boston beat the Heat and Bucks who essentially had the same issue but GSW is admittedly playing better D. Still Warriors are my favorite to win
Klay needs to show up in game 6. Wiggins has been the second best player so far
This is literally how my cousin plays Warriors in 2K against me. No matter how hard I try in D, I get destroyed in offense by Steph and green shots😵
Getting trapped by the best defense in NBA and still getting around with handles so effortlessly is art
As dumb as it sounds, you sometimes feel that teams might as well give Curry the easy 2 since his 3s seem automatic
He shot 7-14 from 3 and he was feeling it. That's no where close to being automatic compared to getting in the paint and taking a easy 2. The only thing is 3 or more than 2 so it's tougher to trade buckets.

I agree that the Celtics have played good defense. But Curry is way too comfortable out there, they have to do something different. Klay and Draymond are going to show up big time in one of the last 3 games.
I really do think that part of what’s been making draymond and thompson play this poorly is because of their switch defense. Usually when curry gets doubled or tripled that’s when they get their shots and that’s how green gets downhill and makes plays. But against this defense, they cant do that, klay isn’t really known as a shot creator. And draymond is no way near to be as good as a facilitator they kake him seem to be without curry’s gravity pulling other opposing players towards him. As a celtics fan, this should be warriors 3-1 lead if refs did not call fouls on warriors everytime warriors tries to defend. Warriors hands are tied up because of automatic foul calls.
True that
I always recommend teams that in order to gain more space...go more vertical as it's more space towards halfcourt than the corners. You want to stretch the defenses out, especially when you have a shooters like Curry and Lillard that can really stretch the floor out vertically. You want to really utilize them to do so. Defenses will either also stretch their defenses out vertically or keep it compacted within the paint because the three is the less efficient than the two.
3 less efficient than 2? 👀
@@benndarayta9156 Yes. It is. A two-pointer is a more efficient shot because it's closer to the rim, so you're more likely to hit more twos than threes, which are further from the rim. It's science bro! Stop acting fucking stupid!
I see exactly what you are seeing, but still Steph was good with math and physics in school. And the three is less efficient for a lot of players except Steph.
Awe, I'm ready this properly now. The wording is a bit funny
How this is meant to be read is "the offense should stretch the defense as far as possible
Because there's more space at even just the half length length of the court when compared to the sides. Because of that, it's better for the offense to stretch the defense vertically rather than horizontally
However, if the offense can't hit 3s at an efficient rate, then the defense gets to be more compact and save more energy by just having to defend the 2
On the flip side, if the offense can hit 3s, at an efficient rate, from further out. Well then, that just becomes a nightmare to properly defend"
Great take!
@@justsaynototv8366 It's the threat of stretching the floor to create more space smart ass! Y'all act like y'all can't think.

Great analysis young man, i got some new insight.
Defense creates offense it's what my coach used to say, and I think it's true. But honestly when a great shooter gets hot the only thing you can do is play better offense as a team, which the celtics weren't doing.
The Celtics are in trouble... Game 6 is coming and he's starting to feel it, Klay6 is coming

Loved this video!
If they wanna double him, remember this is not 2019 Warriors anymore where their only shooters was Klay and KD. This team has atleast 3 shooters on the floor and the other 2 is lob threat
I just notice this why every damn analyts and UA-cam basketball breakdown channel always make videos on how to stop Curry instead of giving him credits like this video, is it hard to believe that unathletic guy is dominating basketball without having 6'7+ height and muscular body like Lebron and Kobe? lmao 🥶
Curry's is not athletic dunking wise but his conditioning is insane... I noticed he's a lot stronger than people think too with the way he's able to shovel off defenders *effortlessly* without getting offensives fouls called
@@blue-phoenix115 The only people calling Curry weak physically are these dudes with "buff and muscular" body with "thug face" who think a clean or babyface man like Curry is weak base on his appearance, mostly Americans underestimate other people physical strength base on their phyiscal appearance lmao 😬
@@BullyMaguire387 I just noticed your name 😂 good one 👍🏻
this analysis is just as good (if not, better than) "thinking basketball". top notch, thank you!
Great video bro
Those doube teams were on the clutch time which I think Udoka instructs the team. Surprisingly, Kerr decided to bench Draymond for early parts of 4th and put him late for redemption. I believe that coaching in late 4th quarter is one of the keys why Warriors won.
Bro warriors defence is THE TRUE #1 DEFENCE. Everybody forgets the warriors we're the #1 defence in the league until dreymond green got hurt, n only then did the Celtics become #1 D. N by the time Dreymond came back healthy there wasn't enough time to get back into the #1 spot because the playoffs began. But I'm reality warriors were the true #1. Btw warriors were still ranked #2 even tho it wasn't the truth
Amazing analysis
I love the home studio! Very cool
If the Celtics are expecting Curry to cool off, that's just dumb. And one of the Warriors will step up eventually, most likely Klay.
Yep klay has played a lot better since game 2
We’re gonna get game 6 Klay no matter what. Let’s hope he shows up.
@@lebogangmkhonto3719 his defense has still been a little sus. Celtics attacking him like he’s Jordan Poole.
@@PrimeTimeGala he played decent defense in game 4
Nah Klay has been below average people just give this man too much credit i really dont get it
Steph drops 34 pts, 21 in the first quarter, played good defense and overall good play and gets lambasted.
Klay drops 25 but gives up freakin 35 on defense and gives the team absolutely nothing to go with those points no rebounding, playmaking, nothing but we say hes had "a good game"
Bruh I don't get the why Klay always needs to get a pass. He played better in game 4 but still not "great"
Steph Curry is better than Kevin Durant change my mind
KD has like 6 championship curry ain’t touching KD’s accomplishments with a 30 inch pole.
@@BobbyP5985 😂😂😂
@@BobbyP5985 kd has 2 and they're both with curry💀
@@gaberouse7374 facts KD should have stayed on the warriors than joining Kyrie
Why should I? Neither are better than Patrick McCaw
🔥🔥good content!
We are blessed to witness one of the greatest offensive player ever.
Curry pissed about that dog pile on his leg last game
I remember old heads were still saying Miller and Ray Allen were the best shooters
Andre Miller was solid but not an outside shooter
@@alekseydrotenko3289 Reggie miller not Andre miller
@@alekseydrotenko3289 reggie miller my brother, hes a clutch sharpshooter
Amazing breakdown what else you got
The primary reason behind the drop coverage for the bigs, is less about about giving the "difficult" shot to Curry, but more about keeping everyone else in check + having a better chance to contest a rebound.
Warriors are a well oiled team. Steph is a generational talent. There will always be a form of punishment however you defend a pick.
Hedging Curry would be giving the keys to their engine, unlocking Draymond Green's passing, and in turn also open up everyone's game.
Switching would've meant more rebounding disadvantage, not to mention Curry would probably still have cooked the bigman guarding him anyways.
Drop coverage invites the greatest shooter ever to shoot an open jumper, but it does allow them to avoid those defensive rotations the Warriors are known to breakdown, and keeps the bigman low enough to be able grab a rebound. It essentially forces a Curry vs Celtics game
It may not be the best solution to guard Steph, but considering they want to prioritize rebounding as well as defend everyone else, its as optimal as it gets.
That’s why they messed with the rim in the game one at Celtics home.
Thank you Steph for bring the fire🔥♥️🙏🌞🌻🌟💪💖
a not so welcome criticism here in the comments:
the new style of your presentation is more complex, yes ... and I am sure the built up was expensive too. but still, the way before was more epic and stylish = just your face and the red and blue lights.
just my humble 2 cents. still digging your content though.
Broth the best shooter + best break downz
4:34
*shoots* *splash* "shook steph curry on the shot boii!"
Steph is averaging 30 pts a game, and he just got 43. i see a 50 piece wing dinner coming soon
He’s averaging 34 now lol
Man he got screwed bad in game 3 if not for foul trouble he would got 40 in that game
What the warriors need right now is to secure the home game. Klay will finish the Boston at game 6.😆
…and they fouled him dozens of times that weren’t called - like the first two plays you showed. In a fairly officiated series the Warriors would have swept and won each game by 20+.
Game 5 was the definition of blitzing Steph, with him face guarded the whole game, leaving space for his teammates to play 4 on 4/3
Imagine being cooked by curry on a zumba shoes 🤣
Curry dominated, no question. But without Wiggins, last night would be an L for the Dubs. Wiggins is the silent hero in this one
Yup he got some crucial offensive rebounds in the last minutes of the game
His rebounding was the x factor for warriors
agree like kerr said they need wiggins looney was good too
I think the reason why you pick him up on top is not to prevent him from shooting logo threes, it’s to prevent their offense from moving, so you pressure the ball handler and keep him from running plays.
Great vid
The reason Boston lost wasnt because of Curry. They were leading until they couldnt score the ball. Stupid turnovers and bad shot attempts cost us the game
Yup that's literally it. People tend to overreact. The Warriors won by 10pts after Curry scored 43pts. That's impressive yes, but it's actually not a great win because the Celtics were just missing shots
It's called law of averages.. lmao... Did you really think that they can keep up that absurdly hot shooting display they had in the 4th quarter of game 1..
@@genmac2843 Explain game 3 in which they led all but about 1 minute. Or even game 4 where they led for most of it as well.
@@fightnight14 boston has been shooting well over their average in this series. Now that they finally back to normal u wanna say it wasn’t a good win? lmfao
they simply got locked down in the 4th quarter
I’m praying Klay has a monster game on Monday. What Curry is doing is unsustainable.
I thought that going into Game 4 but look what happened. People were saying it was unsustainable the entire 215-16 season and yet Steph sustained it.
@@aidanklobuchar1798 Steph wasn’t able to sustain it last night. Had one of his worst games in the playoffs. Thankfully Wiggins and others stepped up. Hopefully Steph is back to being Steph on Thursday to put the final nail in the coffin
They giving curry way too much space and at the top of the key. He’s able to step into those shots as well. These are like practice shots for him, and he makes 90% in practice. Either switch and live with the 1on1 or keep Robert Williams in the paint and blitz curry on the screen. Make a gsw player score in the paint over Williams. But you can’t keep giving curry open threes like this. Last I checked 3s > 2s.
Great video
