    I like your videos very much - and it is so good to have your comments along the way - I have used a traditional armature and it is always a painful process getting the sculpture off it - I usually end up with several pieces which are hard work to rejoin - I will give your method a try

    Thank you so much for this! I took a ceramics class at my college this spring semester, and I'll be taking the fall class too. But I was wheel throwing that entire class, knowing I wouldn't have a wheel available over the summer I was so sad to be away from pottery. My professor and I decided I should work on my hand building / sculpting during this time but I was so intimidated because my main skill is over the wheel. This helped so much and sparked my inspiration again, thank you!

      I liked working on the wheel but then I fell in love with hand builds and sculpting. Good luck.

    Hello, I am wondering if there is any way you can safely significantly speed up drying for a piece like this? Such as leaving in the sun ? And lastly how do you know when a sculpture like this is finally finished drying completely ? Thank you so much

      Blow torch. When you touch it and it doesn’t feel cold

    • @ralapeit0
      @ralapeit0 4 місяці тому +1

      The problem with leaving it in the sun is that the quick drying process will make the piece crack. That's why we usually cover the clay with plastic when it's summer so that it will make the process slower. You can use a blow torch to make the surface dry faster, then the rest of the body of the clay will follow. My best advice is leaving it outside, in the shadow, if it's not windy (that makes it crack too). Being next to a heat source but not directly on it will make the water evaporate quicker with less chance of cracking.

    What clay would you recommend for bust sculpting, where the finished article can be molded in silicone?

    Is it necessary to remove the newspaper if making a much smaller sculpture? I want to sculpt something very small and thin, no more than 2 cm thickness anywhere. Is it ok to just leave a wood and newspaper armature in for firing?

      If you make very small sculpture , you dont need armature.
      You have to remove wood or metalfrom the sculpture.
      Sometimes I fire my small sculptures with paper inside but there is lots of smoke during firing.

    This is the difficult way of doing things. For anyone making sculpture out of CLAY THAT WILL BE FIRED, dont do what youre watching.
    If you start out with a combustible armature, made with paper &/or cardboard thats been shredded, which makes the burn out even better, its so much easier. You can then avoid having to section your work apart, remove your excess of clay & armature from the interior, slipping it all back together.
